Memphis is coming off a 4-4 road trip through California while Iowa dropped three of four at home to Reno. Today s game will be broadcast live on 1210AM and 103.1FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds.com, with Steve Selby on the call. ON THE HILL: Memphis sends Marco Gonzales to the hill today in the series finale. Gonzales is coming off his first rough start of the season, allowing five runs on nine hits and four walks in 5.1 innings against Sacramento on Thursday. In his first two starts, the southpaw had yielded only one run on seven hits and two walks combined. Gonzales missed all of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery and will be making his fifth overall start this season. Iowa counters with Steve Perakslis in spot duty. Perakslis will be making his eighth career start in his 147th professional appearance. He did start last time out, though, on Thursday against Reno. In that game, Perakslis allowed four runs on four hits in 3.2 innings, taking the loss. He began the year with Double-A Tennessee, compiling a 7.15 ERA in nine appearances before being transferred to Iowa on May 17. He pitched in five games (three starts) for the I-Cubs last year, but did not face the Redbirds. SCHEDULE WITH IOWA: The Redbirds and Cubs renew acquaintances for the second series of four this season. Memphis snagged the first set in Des Moines earlier this month by winning the first three games as part of a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. After today, the two teams will not see each other again until eight straight matchups from August 24-31. BIRD BITES THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY (May 30, 2012): The Redbirds scored a run in each of the final four innings, ignited by a solo home run from Eugenio Velez in the 6th, to pick up a come-from-behind, 4-3 victory over Round Rock at AutoZone Park. Bryan Anderson s pinch-hit single with two outs in the 9th scored Pete Kozma for the game-winner. THE SEASON ABOUT THE LAST ONE: The Redbirds scored two runs in the first and second innings, but needed a Nick Martini two-run homer in the eighth to hold off the Iowa Cubs, 6-5, yesterday. Martini was 1-for-3 in the game with two runs scored and two RBI. Luke Weaver was dominant on the mound, allowing just two solo homers in seven innings to earn the win. He tied a season-high with nine strikeouts. THE FINE PRINT: - Memphis has set a franchise record for wins in May with 19 - The Redbirds have not had a full month with fewer than 10 losses since July 2014 (20-9); currently 19-9 in May - Memphis has not won 20 games in a month since August 2014 (20-11); Best month ever was August 1998 (21-9) - The Redbirds did not win its 32nd game last season until June 19 when they improved to 32-35 - Memphis is looking to move 13 games over.500 for the first time since the final day of the 2014 season (79-64) IS THIS HEAVEN? NO IT S IOWA: Memphis pulled out a one-run win against Iowa yesterday, yet another dramatic win in the season series. The Redbirds have three of their six come-from-behind wins when trailing in the seventh inning or later against the Cubs. The Birds also have two last at-bat wins vs Iowa this year. IN A PINCH: Chad Huffman s pinch-hit homer Sunday night was his second in a five-game stretch and continued a recent trend of strong pinch-hitting for Memphis. After starting the year by going 5-for- 23 (.217), Redbirds pinch-hitters are 7-for-15 (.467) with two homers and 10 RBI in the last 16 games. Huffman has contributed seven of the 10 RBI s. A WINNING STREAK? IT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE: Memphis victory yesterday snapped a 12-game streak of alternating wins and losses. The Redbirds had not won back-to-back games since a three-game stretch from May 13-15. Earlier this year, Memphis set a new franchise record with 11 straight wins. That stretch ended against Iowa after the Birds defeated the Cubs in the first three games of the series. MEMPHIS MASHERS: The Redbirds received a clutch homer yesterday, improving their season-long total to 58. Memphis is now 23-7 on the year when hitting at least one home run. The Birds remain in fourth in the circuit standings behind El Paso (61), Nashville (62), and Oklahoma City (66), but keep hitting their homers in bunches. Friday night was already the eighth game this season with at least three homers in the game for the Redbirds. The Redbirds are still way ahead of their pace from a season ago when the squad did not hit its 58th homer until game 79, which came on June 29. Additionally last season, Memphis had just five players hit seven or more homers all season. This year, the Redbirds already have five players with at least seven bombs: Carson Kelly (7), Harrison Bader (8), Luke Voit (8), Patrick Wisdom (9), and Paul DeJong (11). RUN, RUN, RUNAWAY: The Redbirds are 21-for- 45 in steal attempts and have been picked off 12 times. The Redbirds are the only PCL team to have a success rate less than 50 percent, but have shown signs of life lately. After attempting just six stolen bases in the previous 19 contests, Memphis has attempted four steals in the last two games and been successful in all four tries. HOME COOKING: Memphis has played only 23 contests at AutoZone Park so far this year, among the fewest in the Pacific Coast League. That is about to change though as the Redbirds will play 12 of the next 15 in the Bluff City. The Redbirds have made the most of their brief time at home, posting 74 extra-base hits, including 26 home runs. The Redbirds hit 49 homers all of last season at home. AMONG THE ORGANIZATION: The Redbirds pepper the Cardinals minor league affiliate leaderboard in multiple offensive categories: - AVG: Kelly (.326, 1st), Voit (.322, 2nd), Martini (.291, 7th), Bader (.286, 8th), & Cunningham (.283, 10th) - HR: Wisdom (9, 2nd), Voit (8, t-3), & Bader (8, t-3) - RBI: Wisdom (31, t-1), Voit (29, 3rd), & Martini (26, 4th) CONNECT FOUR: The Redbirds are averaging 5.0 runs per games this season, ranking seventh in the league in total runs. But so far this season, four runs has usually been enough for Memphis. The Redbirds have scored at least four runs in their last 18 victories and are 23-1 when scoring at least five runs in a game this year. STARTING OUT QUICK: The Redbirds have scored 32 runs in the first inning and 32 runs in the second inning of games, which are two of their most fruitful frames of the season. Memphis has scored first in 31 of its initial 51 games this season, which is second in the PCL. However, the Redbirds are just 20-11 overall in those contests, which is middle of the pack in the league. Iowa has scored the first run a league-leading 32 times, going 19-13 in such contests. The Redbirds have scored the game s final run 25 times and are 19-6 (2nd in the PCL) in such games. STOP HITTING ME: Chad Huffman was plunked yesterday, continuing an interesting trend for Redbird hitters. Memphis has now been hit 38 times, which is far and away the most in the PCL (Round Rock, 24). Huffman and Todd Cunningham has now been hit eight times each this year, which is tied for the most in the PCL. EXTRA, EXTRA: The Redbirds have recorded 175 extra-base hits this season (106 doubles, 11 triples, 58 home runs), which is second in the PCL (Reno, 194). The Birds currently rank seventh in the league in hitting (.278), but are tied for third slugging percentage (.448) and fourth in total bases (796). NOTHING FOR YOU: Memphis became the final PCL team to post a shutout this season by virtue of last Monday s 9-0 win at Fresno. The Redbirds have held their opponent to one run 11 times and have lost a shutout bid in the seventh inning or later eight times. Yesterday s win improved Memphis to 17-1 on the season when allowing two runs or fewer. MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHES WRANGLING HITS: Rangel Ravelo is the latest Redbird to post a lengthy hitting streak, having hit safely in 11 in a row since May 9 (15-for-35,.429, 3 2B, 6 R, 7 RBI). The feat is perhaps more impressive as Ravelo has stretched the streak twice as a pinch hitter, and once as a replacement after an ejection. The Redbirds now have three double-digit hitting streaks this season (Ravelo, 11, Breyvic Valera, 11 and Todd Cunningham, 13) while every current position player (minus Bruce Caldwell) has hit in at least four straight at some point this year. CLEAR THE DE-CK: Paul DeJong was called up to the Cardinals for the first time in his career on Sunday, and can thank his power for progressing his prospect status. The infielder leads the organization with 12 homers, including a blast as a pinch-hitter in his first career MLB at-bat on Sunday in Colorado. THE JITTERBUG: John Brebbia has turned himself into one of the most reliable performers in the Redbird bullpen. Brebbia picked up saves in three of his last four appearances, and on Sunday, made his Major League debut with the Cardinals. Prior to having his contract purchased, Brebbia had not allowed a run in his last nine outings, covering 16 innings. During that time, he yielded only three hits, struck out 19, and walked four. The righthander had a 1.16 ERA in 14 relief appearances this year and ranked among PCL relievers in fewest baserunners/9 (6.08, 1st) and opponents average (.127, 2nd). THE KELLY FILE: Carson Kelly has caught 25 of the last 32 games for Memphis and leads the league in games behind the plate with 37. He hasn t let the heavy workload affect his offensive performance. In his last 20 games, he has recorded 10 multi-hit contests and increased his average 102 points to.326 (31-for-77,.403, 7 2B, 3 HR, 16 R, 15 RBI). A NEW SHERRIFF IN TOWN: Ryan Sherriff has been one of the most heavily used relievers in the PCL this season, appearing in 21 games, tied for fourthmost in the league. The southpaw has allowed runs in only five of his outings and is currently riding an 9.0-inning scoreless streak over his last seven appearances. Six of the 10 runs Sherriff has allowed this year came in one outing at Colorado Springs on April 19. Aside from that, Sherriff has a 1.64 ERA (4 ER/22 IP). PROSPECTING: The Cardinals organization has seen a steady growth in its prospect ranking the last three years, elevating from 15th to 14th to 12th this season, according to Baseball America. While top prospect Alex Reyes is sidelined for the season, seven of the top 30 prospects tabbed by the publication are currently on the Redbirds roster. That includes Luke Weaver (#2), Carson Kelly (#4), Harrison Bader (#7), Marco Gonzales (#13), Sam Tuivailala (#23), John Gant (#27), and Breyvic Valera (#29). THE ROSTER: Of the 24 players who comprise Memphis active roster, 20 appeared at Triple-A last season, be it with Memphis or another organization. Of those who played at Triple-A, 12 donned a Redbirds uniform. Additionally, the roster is full of MLB experience with 11 players combining for 271 games played.
