www.longbeachskiclub.org December 2013 Kris Kolumn Volume: 75, Issue 7ulp By now, many of you know that I am out for the season (which has barely begun!) as a result of a motorcycle accident in Malibu in early November. But, the incapacity of Your Club s president should not stifle your enthusiasm for hitting the slopes! Mammoth is opening more lifts every week with a big dip in temperature and more snow showers laying a progressively thicker base. June Mountain opens in just a couple weeks with no additional lift fee for season pass holders! Far West s informative Councilman has gone electronic! My favorite section, Travel, is followed by many of Our Club s members and features trips around the world. Older issues are also available at this link: http://fwsa.org/membercorner/publications/councilman/councilman.html The latest in ski and ski boot technologies will afford you greater comfort and capability than ever before. As discussed by Gary from REI at Our October Open House, new skis are lighter weight, more durable, and higher performing than even last year s skis. Now, it has become almost routine to mold higher level boots to your feet. For those of you who want to find ways to propel yourselves more safely or swiftly through all manner of ski runs, do yourself a favor and take a peek at the LA Council 32nd Annual Ski, Ride, and Race Camp, Dec 16-20. Maybe taking in the Ullr Giant Slalom on the preceding Saturday (see Roberto for accommodations) will encourage you to sharpen your skills at this camp even if your president cannot be there as a cheer leader. Be sure to check this Breeze s flyer for information on the Winter Kick Off Party at the Cave in Mammoth. It features Warren Miller s Ticket to Ride. And don t forget the 4-day Ski-Dazzle event at the L.A. Convention Center, December 5-8! Here you ll find deals on skis, boots and accessories. http://www.skidazzle.com/losangles-show-buy-tickets.htm For those of us sticking closer to home, you ll want to visit family and friends at the Annual Holiday Party, December 7th. It s always wonderful to see all the delectables at this party and hope I can make it! For those of you travelling this season, I hope your experiences exceed your expectations, and that you come back intact with bountiful stories to be shared over your favorite port. Best wishes for Happy Holidays with friends, old and new, and family!

Weekend Trips with Roberto By Roberto Tovar Greetings members: The schedule has been set for the coming ski season: Dec 12-15, 2013 Jan 9-12, 2014 Feb 20-23, 2014 Mar 20-23, 2014 Apr 3-6, 2014 This years cost is $ 200, for the three day weekend. This cost covers comfortable condo lodging with a fully equipped kitchen, bedding and towels. A jacuzzi is on-site. A communal dinner is provided on Saturday night with pasta and sauce, garlic bread, salad, wine, etc. If you need help in arranging carpools and procuring lift tickets, that can be provided. You must provide your own ski equipment, lift tickets and a Friday night meal. Please remember, you must be an official member of the Long Beach Ski Club to join the ski club trips and fill out the sign-up form located in the back part of Breeze. Please support the club and see you up on the slopes! Week Trip With Shep By Bob Shepard The Park City, Canyons & Deer Valley Utah ski week trip during the first week of February 1-8, 2014 currently has 8 members signed up. The LBSC ski club has cut back on a number of spots for this trip. However, there are still openings on available through two other ski clubs - Century City and Space Park ski clubs invite LBSC members to sign-up with them. We will be departing from LAX to Salt Lake City, flying on Southwest Airlines with no baggage fees for your first two bags (both your boot and ski bag count as one bag). Check out all of the trip details in the Park City Flyer and Sign-up form now in the Ski Breeze. After the ski trip there will be a photo party later in May 2014, location to be determined later. Take lots of photos and videos. Please sign-up early for the trip and mail in the forms NOW. 3

Racing By Catherine Singer The Long Beach Ski Club has a long and prosperous history competing against the other regional ski clubs in both Slalom and Giant Slalom race events at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. LBSC competes within the Ullr Race League and the organization is set up to allow skiers of all abilities to compete against others within their same skill. 2013-2014 Race Schedule at Mammoth 12/14 Giant Slalom 12/16-20 LA Council Ski & Race Week 1/6-10 ROKKA Race Camp 1/11 Slalom 2/22 Giant Slalom 3/22-23 SOCAL Championships Membership Pattison s Parley By Dave Pattison The Long Beach Ski Club sends a big CONGRATULATIONS out to newlyweds Dave and Jeanne-Marie Pattison who tied the knot in late September! I realized there wasn t a good web page with web cams of Mammoth, so I decided to build my own: http://ski395.com. Currently it has the http:// www.mammothmountain.com web cams and some traffic and Cal Trans information. I will be adding more links and information as the storms start rolling in. It is very mobile friendly so open it up on your smart phone. Feel free to contact me if you have any suggestions or comments. I has giant banner ad for the Long Beach Ski Club so hopefully we can attract more interest in our club. 4 The newlywed Pattisons honeymooning in Portillo, Chile

Get Loose with Lance By Lance Liebl During the month of November we didn t have a social event. In December we will have a Christmas Party at Bob Miller s home. See flyer for details. At the present time I am planning a wine tasting for our January social event. Watch for flyer for upcoming for details. I hope all our members had a Happy Thanksgiving. Muriel and myself spent Thanksgiving in Idyllwild with her daughter, son in law and his 92 year old mother who just arrived from Poland for the holidays. We went on several hikes with his mom. Maybe this will give some of the members the incentive to get off there butts and start waking more. Looking forward to see members at the Xmas Party. DECEMBER BIRTHDAYS! Counting with Cherri By Cherri Gregg Season s Greetings! It s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is over, and that Christmas is just over three weeks away. Wasn t it just yesterday that we were putting away our skis and looking forward to all of the activities that come with summer? Some of you may be aware that the Club has invested in a new provider for our website that is going to allow us to do more through the Internet. Now potential members can sign up for membership on the website, and maybe when some of the kinks are worked out (like getting signed apps & waivers), members might actually be able to pay from the site too. As Treasurer, I must be honest and say that this change has made my task a little more difficult. And who says change is never easy! But with time, I believe that it will help the club attract new members, and right now that needs to be our focus. The Club currently has 53 members, and 3 pending members (see, I wouldn t have known about the pending members before). It s sad to say, that at this same time last year the membership was at 64. So, if you haven t renewed, what are you waiting for? Sign up! And if you know of anyone who would enjoy being a member of the Club, like hanging around with a bunch of great people like us, give them Kris or David s info and let them tell them all of the benefits of being a member that they can enjoy. I know that Ken & I are looking forward to a great ski season! The Club currently has 8 members signed up for the week trip to Utah. Unfortunately two other members had to cancel due to injuries. Here s hoping for speedy recoveries! We always enjoy the weekend trips to Mammoth and the Saturday night dinners at the Club condo. It is such a fun and relaxing way to spend a weekend. And how lucky are we that Mammoth is such a great place to ski, and we can get there by car? Well that s it for me. Hope you see you at the Annual Holiday party or one of the other Club s social events! WAYS & MEANS By Ken Gregg Sorry to say that the attendance or more accurately said, the lack of attendance, at the most recent General Membership meeting on 6 November, did not warrant holding a raffle. The next opportunity to conduct a raffle will be at our next General Membership Meeting, which is scheduled for 4 December at 7:00 p.m. As usual, it will be held @ Ecco s Pizza in Long Beach. Please plan on joining us for some free pizza (drinks are on your own), socializing and information about the club & upcoming events. As in the past we will be conducting a drawing to give away a bottle of wine to any of the non or recently new members in attendance. In addition, we are also planning on conducting raffle for everyone s participation & enjoyment. Hopefully you are now well into your fitness program this upcoming season. If you haven t already started to do so, now would be an excellent time to begin. Let s be ready for the best ski season ever!! 6
