NEWSLETTER October 2011 "The difference between school and life? In School, you're taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you're given a test that teaches you a lesson." From the Headmaster s desk Dear Parents and Friends of the Academy Tom Bodett Franklin D. Roosevelt once said that, Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort. As we consider what F D Roosevelt said, we think in particular of our matrics who are approaching the pinnacle of their schooling careers. At the beginning of October the Grade 10 s and 11 s had a few days study break from their academic programme, however the matrics continued with additional lessons in preparation for their final exams. Despite being under pressure, the matrics who continue to work hard at the tracks in the morning and race ride, have to also focus on their academics in order to achieve the best possible results. They wrote their first exam on Monday 24 th October which was English. While they are writing their matric exams over the next number of weeks, we pray that they will experience the happiness of achievement and indeed experience the thrill of creativity. The Academy recently embarked on a strategic review with the main objective to take the Academy well into the future. Firstly, this is to meet the relevant needs of the South African Racing Industry, and secondly to increase our association with the International Market. I would like to congratulate the following apprentices for their achievements in racing and academics during the month of October: Athandiwe Mgudlwa for being awarded KZN Apprentice Jockey of the Year. Athandiwe was awarded the floating trophy and a specially framed picture of himself, winning the memorable four legs of the Jackpot, at Scottsville on Sunday 27 February 2011. A number of Academy staff supported Athandiwe at the KwaZulu Natal Racing Awards 2011. Girish Goomany for his first win at Clairwood on October 18. Girish won the 2 nd race on Raging River for trainer Charles Laird.

Gareth Wright for his 50 th win at Kenilworth on Saturday 29 October. Gareth won the 6 th race on Platinum Cat for trainer Glen Kotzen. Denise Lee, Evert Pheiffer, Tshwaro Appie, Teaque Gould, Hennie Greyling, Keagan de Melo, Grant van Niekerk, Athandiwe Mgudlwa, Neo Qaule, JP van der Merwe, Jason Smitsdorff, Nooresh Juglall, Girish Goomany, Stallone Lee Naidoo, Ryan Roy Curling and Gareth Wright for winning races during the month of October. Ryan Munger (Grade 10), Donovan Dillon (Grade 11) and Tshepiso Mashaba (Grade12) for achieving 1 st place in class at the end of the 3 rd term. An ecstatic Athandiwe Mgudlwa receives his trophy from Neil Butcher, Deputy Chairman of Gold Circle Athandiwe shows off his special award for winning all four legs of the Jackpot at Scottsville during February this year. Pre-Assessment Training Workshops As part of the Academy s recruitment process, we decided to introduce a special three day pre-assessment training workshop for the 2012 shortlisted applicants. The workshop took place during the October school holidays and included the following activities: Stable duties such as grooming, care of horses and mucking out Basic riding lessons Assessment of their physical fitness and strength by a sports conditioning trainer A site visit to Summerveld Training Centre to experience race horses in training This successful workshop gave the applicants the opportunity to determine if they were suited to this career and also provided our riding masters an insight to their riding ability and passion. Due to the success of this workshop, it has been decided to continue with them well into the future. Group one Group two 5

Quiz Night The annual apprentice quiz night took place at the Academy on Wednesday 5 October. Five teams including 4-5 apprentices participated in this popular and fun activity. The quiz comprised a selection of questions on general knowledge, rugby, history, cars, horse/racing related questions. There was also a section for picture recognition where some of the Academy staff had submitted photographs of themselves as young children and the apprentices had to identify them. Lots of laughs about this one!! The winning team in deliberation The winning team included Lerato Mohapi, Tshepiso Mashaba, Collen Thabana, Ryan Munger and Keagan de Melo. They won a R480 voucher from Oscars Restaurant in Hillcrest. Thanks must go to our sports conditioning trainer Jeremy Downing, our nursing sister Debbie Butt and Oscars for sponsoring the prize. Ending off with a smile A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says: "That's the ugliest baby that I've ever seen. Ugh!" The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her: "The driver just insulted me!" The man says: "You go right up there and tell him off go ahead, I'll hold your monkey for you."
