PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello Everyone: Well another year has gone and another one begins. I hope you all had a good and safe Christmas and Happy New Year. Karen and I had a good time at the many Christmas functions. Good people and good tucker, a bloke can t go wrong. Kadina s last dance of the year was great fun, I expected nothing less from that lot, they always enjoy themselves. Wild Frontier s New Year Eve dance was a great way to see in the New Year. It was sad to hear that Rosemary Schulz passed away, she has been an active member of the Society since 1978, she will be sadly missed by all. Also Barry Jordan passed on the 21 st December, one of the most important and respected callers of his time. We were proud to have him open the 2018 State Convention, a great man, much loved and respected by all who knew him. Hope to see you all safe and well in the New Year. Murray Dempsey Vale Barry Jordan. We first met Barry & Danny in 1970 at Brian Townsend;s Square Dance Club at Walkerville. As both Scotty & myself had little experience in calling we were invited to their home at Elizabeth to practice on them. We practiced Hoedowns and to watch the set as things changed from one call to another. Barry also became interested in calling & sometime after I started Wild Frontier, Barry formed the Bunch of Squares Club. Barry is listed on the SASDS Honour Roll and was President from 1975 1976. At that time all callers had homemade (unreliable) equipment, Barry was very good at fixing this and was a great asset to all callers. This photo was taken at the last State Convention by his grand daughter Sarah. Both Barry & Danny were our official guests opening this occasion. Jeff Seidel & Peter (Scotty) Scott 3

SASDS COMMITTEE NEWS Welcome to another great year of Square Dancing and fellowship. All of the Clubs finished the old year with fun, festive celebrations and now we are looking ahead to another very active year. Planning for our State Convention Click go the Shears in Naracoorte is well underway. Co-ordinators Alan & Chris Hall have done a lot of preliminary preparation already. The SASDS Committee members who viewed the Naracoorte Town Hall at the end of last year say it will be a superb venue. Peter [Scotty] Scott & Jeff Seidel visited Alan & Chris early in January to share a few ideas and the Committee always looks forward to hearing their monthly progress report. Registration Forms will be available soon and don t delay in booking your accommodation. The Society has organised a 1st Birthday Shield for Whyalla Twirlers who will be having a celebration on 4 th February. The 2019 Calendar and 2018 photos of Society events are now available on our website at www.squaredancingsa.com The Committee are constantly reviewing Society events and procedures to make them as good as possible. The introduction of the Round Up in digital form with colour was very well received, though a printed copy is always an option. Clubs are encouraged to send photos from special dances, especially their Birthdays, to the editor so that they can be featured in Round Up. The Society storage unit contains many items which may be useful to Clubs when organising special dances. A list of items available for loan will be circulated soon. There have been difficulties in obtaining the Learner Books which the Society makes available to Clubs. However, we are hoping this will soon be resolved. The Clubs are now in full swing, so have a great year of dancing. Cheers, Pauline FROM THE EDITORS DESK Welcome to the first edition of Round Up for 2019, this edition features photos from the various Christmas and New Years celebrations, Square Dancers enjoy a party! Already the dancing year looks like a busy one with a number of South Australian and interstate events featured in this issue. Here in South Australia we are looking forward in March to a visit by retiring international caller Jerry Jestin and our first (to my knowledge) Flash Mob in February, how exciting! Interstate there are the Victorian State Convention in early March followed by another international caller on the Mornington Peninsula in April. Cheers, Stephen 4

2018 SASDS CHRISTMAS DANCE 6

7

Here we are, all refreshed after the Xmas/New Year break and another great year begins at the Outlaws. Firstly we d like to thank all who helped with our Xmas dances - particularly the decorating team and all who came along dressed the part. It was a lovely meal and thanks to all who attended, it was a wonderful atmosphere to finish off the year. Our annual Aussie BBQ was our first function for 2019 and we hope you all enjoyed the evening. Coming up in February will be our Valentine s Charity dance, with our pre-loved square dance clothing sale. As always, the theme will be red and white and we look forward to seeing you there. Looking ahead to March, please note we not only have our popular St Patrick s Spud night, but also a special dance to host US caller Jerry Jestin on his farewell tour of Australia. And.we will also be closed for one night on March 11th as we visit the 50th Victorian State Convention. Finally, congratulations to the Plus group who just completed learning the full Plus program with us on Wednesday nights. We look forward to having you join us at the Plus club. www.adelaideoutlaws.com 8

ADELAIDE OUTLAWS XMAS DINNER-DANCE DEC 2018 Adelaide Outlaws Dinner DANCING FOR CHRISTMAS DAWN S BIRTHDAY - FLOWERS PRESENTED BY PRESIDENT ROBERT Adelaide Outlaws GOOD FOOD & FUN DANCING ANTICIPATION OF A GREAT MEAL A scrumptious meal was enjoyed by all at our recent Xmas dinner at the local RSL as well as a fun night of friendship and laughter. Dawns Birthday just We hope before everyone had a safe Christmas and Merry Christmas and New Year and look forward to catching up on the dance floor in the new year. The Two Amigos 9 Adelaide Outlaws

Lovely to have visits recently from Phillip Lleydon from Golden Squares and Joy and Cyril from Suncoasters in Buderim Qld on their Australian travels. We enjoyed pizza followed by a delicious variety of ice cream drumsticks along with some fun Xmas Square Dance calls for our last night of dancing for the year. Thank you to Bernie for her bracket of Xmas calls, well done. Was saddened to read of the passing of Brian, from Mannum. Lovely photo of his farewell service with the entourage of CFS uniforms. Sincere condolences to John and Lynnette Lauterbach on the sudden passing of daughter, Vanessa. Planning is ramping up in readiness for the State convention. Stay tuned. Catch you on the dance floor somewhere during 2019. Alan & Chris While no report received from John and Jacqueline this month, they made appearances at Paddle Steamers, Yorke Promenaders and Sunset Twirlers to join in the Christmas celebrations, see separate reports further in this issue. JVC Squares reopens on 5th February, be careful where you park as the usual spot is now a permit zone. Ed https://jvcsquaredance.com When you think of the Adelaide Plus Clubs you'd probably naturally consider Kannella as a Plus Club. But did you know that Kannella is primarily made up of A and C level dancers? These dancers love a challenge and love to learn. During the bracket break you will often see them consulting their devices, an app called Taminations, here they check on definitions or a video of how to complete a particular move. We are all responsible for our own learning and as a result new movements need to be reviewed and revised after the Tuesday night dance., so we check Taminations or our hand written notes. When we arrive at the hall the following week Jeff will ask what moves we would like to focus on that night. We all know that we have to use it or lose it so learning Square Dance moves is a great thing to do as we age. So check out Taminations on your phone or PC. PC: www.tamtwirlers.org/taminations/ Smartphone: Search for Taminations 10

One of our November Friday night dances was held with a Melbourne Cup theme. A brilliant jockey arrived wearing a former jockey s silks which was a combination of deep purple & yellow with a canary yellow cap. This jockey was accompanied by two Melbourne Cup Day fashionistas. Also during November we had Milton & Ros calling as we danced in a rectangular format. May I add that this is brilliant for all those who dance this style regularly. It took me a while to work out where my set was within the rectangle but as usual with plenty of help from the professionals, I got it in the end. An old favourite, the Grand Colonial Spin was danced with the utmost accuracy albeit with a little variation on timing!!!!! Ros & Mark attended an event in Victoria to dance with overseas caller, Paul Bristow. They always have an exceptional time & value meeting up again with dancers & callers from the wider square dance community. Paddle Steamers Christmas Break Up was on Friday 14 th December & our members appreciate the extended invitation to many Club s Christmas functions. Hopefully, you all had an enjoyable festive season sharing with those who are close to you & hope that the year ahead is kind to you in every way. The date for Paddle Steamers first dance night for 2019 is the 25 th January with a celebratory Aussie theme night. Gail 11

Welcome back everyone, hope you ve managed to get through our hot weather okay don t forget we have air-conditioning at our hall. Great to see a good turn out for our first night back, despite the weather and always nice to welcome visitors this time Doona from Melbourne & Jennifer from Whyalla. Thanks to everyone for helping / joining us for our Christmas Break-up. It was a great night with the kids enjoying decorating homemade gingerbread, dancing, treasure hunt and piñata. Luckily Santa was able to take time out from his busy schedule to visit us and give a bag of goodies to the kids. While the rest of us continued our dancing, the kids had their special supper. Once again, a nice way to finish up for the Christmas break thanks to all who helped in any way. Of course, that wasn t actually our last dance for the year because we had our annual New Year s Eve celebration and about five squares helped us dance-in the New Year great to see all who came along including Ken & Wendy from Naracoorte and Karen & Carl back from Queensland. Our thoughts are with Sue Bottroff and hope she is recovering well after breaking her ankle just before Christmas and not having surgery until the New Year. Have you organised yourselves to help us celebrate our 46 th Birthday? It is coming up quickly, Saturday 16th February (no dancing on the Friday night) and should be a great night see advert for all the details. March sees our weekend away with Kannella Squares and anyone else who would like to join us again see advert for details. Happy dancing, Jenny. www.wildfrontiersa.com 12

Happy New Year everyone we hope you enjoyed the break and welcome back. Our Christmas break ups were very successful. The Square Dance break up had 44 dinners served and despite a late start to dancing we still managed Learners,, Plus and Rounds so something for everybody. We were pleased to welcome back Karen & Carl after returning from Queensland, it is lovely to have you back. Thank you to John Casey for calling and along with Les called all Christmas songs. Ian Fowler regaled us with some clever poetry and Greg Megow read a Christmas story. The Round Dance breakup was the best attendance we have ever had and thank you to Les, Anne, Thelma and Shirley for cueing and the dancers of T & T Rounds for coming along. Happy Dancing from Anne & Les http://sunsettwirlers.com/ 15

At Scootbacks we have a delayed to start due to the weather being so hot. Hopefully Mother Nature eases up with the torture. We have our Valentine's dance approaching quickly with all our members enjoying a free night. There will be chocolate of course so we will have to work off those sneaky calories. Hope everyone had a wonderful start to the New Year and it stays that way for the rest of it! Keep cool and have fun De Square lady Here we are at the start of another year, hoping you all had a great Xmas and New Year, so Happy New Year to all. We finished off 2018 with our usual Xmas dance which also included three Birthdays, Roley who has reached the ripe age of 90, myself & Kerry [I'm not telling]. Thank you to Shirley, Anne and Les for helping me with the Cueing So I hope all are well and ready to start again. After promising myself I would have a complete break over the holidays I still couldn't help myself and have some new dances to start the year. I started a new Learners Class on 20th January. It is so nice to, now and then, have a dance in a break with your partner. So if you have nothing to do on Sunday afternoons you could still join in at 2-30 at the Druids Hall Cassie St. Collinswood. Remember we do a lot of Rounds at State and National Conventions and Society dances. Until Next Month. Regards Thelma Welcome everyone to a New Year of Square Dancing. Congratulations to our dancers who have found new friends in the last couple of months. We hope everyone had a fantastic break and keen to get dancing again with our new learners. A huge thank you to the learners from last year who have volunteered their time to dance alongside our new people. We're looking forward to celebrating our 1st Birthday on 4th February and will come up with some new ideas for 2019. Happy dancing everyone, from Shirley and David 16

No report received. Now back dancing after a few weeks break over the Christmas/New Year holidays. We hope that everyone had a great Christmas and set their New Year resolutions in place. We held our Christmas Dinner/Dance in December and were fortunate to have Alan & Anne, Kevin & Lois from Wild Frontier and also John and Jackie from JVC Squares join us for the evening. John helped Scotty with the calling, along with another unknown walk-in caller, Uncle Festus Fartmore, making a surprise appearance. Our Sisters Two gave us a double dose of their humour with a characterisation poster of our Club members. A great night was had by all. By the time this issue gets out we will have held our Australia Day Dance so will fill you in on this in the next issue Until next time, Happy Dancing http://yorkepromenaders.tk/ 17
