When it comes to sports, often it's not how a team starts, but how it finishes that is remembered. Such is the case with the 2007 Wright State softball team as after struggling for most of the season and finishing seventh in the Horizon League standings, the Raiders caught fire at the right time and made it a postseason to remember, sweeping four games to win the League tournament title and advancing to the NCAA Regionals in Evanston, Illinois. Along the way, several team records were either tied or broke while just over half of the members of the team received some sort of postseason honor. The season began in Las Vegas with the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. While Wright State did not pick up a victory on the trip, the Raiders gained valuable experience as five of the six opponents they faced (Cal oly, Cal State Northridge, Oregon State, Southern Utah, UCLA) later qualified for the NCAA Tournament. A 3-2 decision over urdue at the Buzz Classic in Georgia gave Wright State its first win of the season and the Raiders inched closer to the.500 mark with wins over San Jose State and Gardner-Webb later in that tournament, three wins at Morehead State and a doubleheader sweep of Dayton in the home opener. But just when it looked like things were getting back on track, the struggles began again for WSU as the squad dropped four of five games at the Nissan Invitational by a total of five runs, a tournament which also included future NCAA participants Harvard and Winthrop. After taking five of seven from W, Butler, IUUI and Eastern Kentucky, the Raiders won just seven of the final 24 games of the regular season and were shutout eight The Raiders won four straight games to capture the 2007 Horizon League Tournament title despite being the seventh seed. times during that stretch. Three Raiders received All- Horizon League honors as Jherica Williams was named the League's Newcomer of the Year and was selected First Team All- League. Kristen Bradshaw was named to the Second Team while erkins joined Williams on the All-Newcomer Team. Heading into postseason, Viking Field in Cleveland already had significance in Wright State softball history as the Raiders won the Horizon League Tournament title the last time it hosted the tournament in 2003. That tournament saw WSU, as the eighth seed, win four straight to advance to the NCAA Regionals for the first time in school history. Wright State faced a similar circumstance in 2007 in being the seventh seed and the Raiders had another bit of history of their side as they had won eight of their last nine games at Viking Field, starting with the 2003 championship. Could history repeat itself? In the case of the Raiders, the answer was a resounding yes, despite the overwhelming odds. In the opening round, WSU knocked off #2 seed Cleveland State 4-3, marking the second straight year that the Raiders had defeated the Vikings in the first game of the tournament. Wright State then advanced to the winner's bracket finals with a 7-2 decision over #6 seed Butler, scoring five runs in the fifth to pull away. Wright State then took on #4 seed UIC in the winner's bracket finals and it didn't look good for the Raiders early as the Flames jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings. A Michelle Logan RBI groundout and a two-run double by Kristen Bradshaw, however, in the fifth tied the game and WSU tallied the winning run an inning later on a Jamie erkins double followed by a single from Jacqueline Macy. It was then a rematch with Cleveland State for the Horizon League title and again the Raiders fell behind early, trailing 3-0 after three innings. Wright State, though, answered with three of its own in the fourth on a Jherica Williams RBI triple, a erkins hit up the middle and a Macy triple to 34 Wright 2008 State Softball University

right center. The game remained tied until the decisive eighth when WSU scored four times, the key blow being a three-run double to the gap in the right center off the bat of Kristen Farley. Again, the 2007 championship game was like 2003 in that Wright State defeated Cleveland State by a similar score (7-5 in 2003, 7-3 in 2007) and that the game was decided in the final inning by a Raider driving in three runs with one swing of the bat (Farley in 2007, Stephanie Salas with a three-run home run in 2003). Six Raiders received All-Tournament honors, led by erkins, who was selected for both the MV and itching Awards. erkins hit.500 in the tournament offensively with four runs scored and in the circle, was 2-0 with a save, did not allow a run and gave up just five hits in 10.2 innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Also named to the All-Tournament Team was Malerie Klingler, who hit.417 in the tournament; Allison Cox, who earned the win over Butler in the winner's bracket semifinals and hit.400 at the plate; Farley, who along with the three-run double in the championship had two other doubles and drove in a teamhigh five overall; and Macy, who.467 with three RBI. Briauna Birl rounded out the list of honorees as she was chosen for the Defensive layer Award. Wright State faced a difficult task in the opening round of the NCAA Regionals against host Northwestern, a team that finished as the national runnerup in 2006, was ranked #6 in the country and was the second seed for the tournament. The Raiders, though, battled tough before falling to the Wildcats 4-1. Northwestern later went on to the College World Series. WSU then trailed Notre Dame Jamie erkins (left) was named Tournament MV and received the itching Award while Briauna Birl (middle) received the Defensive Award. just 1-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth in an elimination game, but the Irish added two insurance runs and went on to the 3-0 decision, ending Wright State's incredible postseason run. Single-season marks were set in runs scored (Williams, 45), putouts (Macy, 372) and assists (Bradshaw, 150) while team single-season records were either tied or set in games played (60, tying 2004), at bats (1579), hits (408) and innings pitched (390.1). In the final Horizon League rankings, the Raiders as a squad led or tied for the Horizon League lead in runs scored (227), triples (12) and stolen bases (78). Individually, Williams paced the League in runs scored (45) and triples (5) while placing second in stolen bases (26) and total bases (95) and tying for second in doubles (15). Bradshaw was second in the League in runs scored (41) and walks (26), third in stolen bases (14) and tied for third in RBI (34). Five Raiders were selected to the All-Tournament Team in Jamie erkins, Allison Cox, Kristen Farley, Malerie Klingler and Jacqueline Macy. Wright 2007 State Volleyball University 35
