1 STEWARDS REPORT Australian Turf Club ROYAL RANDWICK RACECOURSE Saturday 6 June 2015 Weather: Fine/Overcast Track: Soft (6); downgraded to Soft (7) at 12.18pm Rail: +6m Penetrometer: 5.73 STEWARDS: R P Murrihy (Chairman), G T Rudolph, M F Van Gestel, D M Greer and cadets J T Penfold and J A Shultz RACE 1: Australian Jewellery Liquidators Plate 1100m Yaboroo slow to begin. Zezolla slow to begin. Passing the 600m made contact with Holler (S Clipperton), which shifted in. S Clipperton was told to exercise more care. Kimberley Star jumped awkwardly. Overraced in the early and middle stages and for some distance near the 600m got its head up when being restrained from the heels of Holler. Coys rider J Parr stated his mount became stirred up in the barrier, raced wide throughout and weakened after laying in badly in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr M Conners advised Coys will be spelled. RACE 2: Decorative Events & Exhibitions Handicap 1400m Duibio when questioned, rider C Reith stated his mount settled well, but was outsprinted in the straight. C Reith reported that his whip was knocked from his grasp by the whip of D Beasley, rider of Liberty Island, near the 200m. Final Decision K O'Hara, rider of fourth placegetter, was questioned as to why, after beginning well from barrier 1, she fought to restrain her mount for the first 400m of the event to ride it back in the field. She explained that she was riding to instructions and to the successful pattern established when Final Decision won it its most recent start at Randwick on 20 May 2015. K O'Hara added that, whilst Final Decision could have settled closer to the lead, she was fearful that, had she done so, the gelding was likely to have pulled too hard and not finish its race off. RACE 3: Randwick City Council Handicap 1400m Pythagorean rider J Collett stated his instructions had been to be positive from the barriers, however, the gelding missed the start by three-quarters of a length and then had to be checked across the heels of Fine Bubbles when taken in by My Sabeel (D Beasley), which jumped away awkwardly and shifted in shortly after the start. D Beasley was reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to make more effort to prevent his mount shifting ground.
2 My Sabeel rider D Beasley stated his instructions had been to be midfield, however, from his wide barrier, with no pace on early, he was obliged to allow his mount to stride forward and lead so as not to be trapped without cover. Pajaro a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding lost its off hind plate in running. Fine Bubbles a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare had been galloped on to the near hind leg and had sustained speedy cuts to the off hind fetlock and pastern area. RACE 4: Courtenay House Handicap 2000m Flying Sebring late withdrawal at 9.17am, on veterinary advice, when the gelding was found to be lame in the near foreleg. The stable was asked to provide a veterinary clearance prior to the gelding's next start. Thurston rider App. L Grace was unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance of the gelding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had abraded its near hind bumper. Stable representative Mr R Litt advised that Thurston would now be spelled. Word Of Mouth prior to the declaration of correct weight App. T Marshall requested permission to view the Stewards' patrol videos, but declined to exercise his right to lodge and objection. App. R Hutchings pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that near the 200m, after Word Of Mouth came into contact with the hindquarter of Too Hi Tek when endeavouring to take a narrow run to the inside of the heels of Banksters Bonus, Word Of Mouth shortly after had to be checked off the heels of Banksters Bonus when taken out by Too Hi Tek, which in turn was hampered and taken out by Sir Mako (App. R Hutchings), which shifted out to improve to the outside of the heels of Lucky Liaison. App. R Hutchings' permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 14 June 2015 and to expire on Sunday, 21 June 2015, on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account App. Hutchings' guilty plea and the fact there had been some contribution initially due to the shift by Word Of Mouth making contact with Too Hi Tek. RACE 5: Sydney Airport Stayers Cup 3200m Turf Speedie a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer Mrs G Markwell was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again. Lovethebeaches when questioned, trainer Mr S Hodge stated that, whilst stepping up from 2100m at its last start at Gosford on 26 May 2015 when it was beaten for pace early, it was expected over the 3200m today Lovethebeaches would be more forward. He added, although it had not been his instructions to lead, he was surprised that the mare was able to lead by such a substantial margin. Stewards interviewed all riders (except P King, rider of Lovethebeaches) in the event relative to the tactics adopted, whereby the winner, Lovethebeaches, was permitted to establish a lead of in excess of 100m in the middle stages before holding on to win by five lengths. In particular the Stewards questioned each rider, given that the pace of the remainder of the field was significantly slower than average, as to whether those riders which had the opportunity to increase the tempo could and should have shown more initiative. After interviewing each rider in the race, the inquiry was adjourned so that the Stewards may give closer consideration to the individual riding tactics and the
3 sectional times of the race, particularly as Stewards are mindful the sectional times over the 3200m on rain affected tracks are derived from 18 races, of which 15 were Group 1 Sydney Cups. Sindariya a post-race veterinary examination revealed blood present on the near-side nostril due to a laceration. Trainer representative Mr N Dilmy stated that, on return to the stable, Sindariya was inspected by the stable veterinarian, who confirmed a laceration inside the nostril. RACE 6: POWHF Tommy Raudonikis OAM June Stakes (Listed) 1100m Agent got its head up in the early stages. RACE 7: Mark Moran Handicap 1200m Forget trainer Mrs K Waugh, represented by Mr T Belleu, was fined the sum of $200 under LR35(2) for the late notification of S Clipperton as the rider of the gelding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding lost its off-hind plate in running. Faustus as A Hyeronimus was overweight, Stewards permitted P King to be substituted as the rider of the gelding. A Hyeronimus was fined $200 under AR120(b). Black Revolver slow to begin. Faustus - began awkwardly. Fair Call D Beasley, rider of Alpha Beat was reprimanded for shifting in and briefly hampering Fair Call near the 700m. In the incident Fair Call, which was overracing badly, had to be checked off the heels of Faustus. Impulsive Spirit rider App. R Hutchings and stable representative Ms H Devlin were unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance of the gelding today. Ms Devlin undertook to report if there is anything amiss with Impulsive Spirit subsequent to the race and the Stewards will confer with trainer Mr J Pride. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had quartered its off-fore heel in running. RACE 8: Eastern Heart Clinic Handicap 1400m Oh My Papa - which was slow to begin, had to be checked when crowded shortly after the start between Bouzy Rouge and Berrimilla, which both began awkwardly. Song And Laughter bumped when I'm In The Money shifted out at the start. Bouzy Rouge tightened near the 1300m. Berrimilla briefly tightened near the 1300m when Song And Laughter shifted in. Transfers inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 200m. Electric Power when questioned concerning the performance of the mare, S Clipperton stated, from his wide barrier, he was back and trapped wide and was positioned, in his opinion, against the pattern of racing today. He said in the circumstances he felt Electric Power finished the race off reasonably well over the final 150m. Trainer Mr K Lees agreed
4 with the explanation of S Clipperton and undertook to report back on the progress of the mare subsequent to the race. Sense And Reason when questioned why he allowed Just As Cosmic to cross him after travelling 200m, J Collett stated his instructions were, from his inside draw, to ride the mare quietly midfield with cover. He added that, as the early tempo was solid, he felt it would have been to the detriment of Sense And Reason to have persevered to hold his running inside Just As Cosmic at that point of the race. J Collett agreed, in retrospect, he was then disadvantaged as he was held up between Just As Cosmic and was obliged to make his run wide in the straight. GENERAL: The Stewards today questioned J Collett relative to comments he made, which were subsequently quoted in a newspaper article on Sunday, 31 May 2015, whereby he stated he rode at Scone on Saturday, 16 May 2015 when suffering from illness. J Collett clarified that he may have been feeling the onset of a virus, which subsequently resulted in him forfeiting rides at trials on Monday, 18 May 2015 and race rides on 20 and 21 May 2015. J Collett acknowledged that his comments could have been interpreted as him being in breach of AR81F(1)(b), which requires a rider to report to the Stewards if he is suffering from any illness or condition which may affect his performance. Whilst the Stewards had no criticism of J Collett's riding performances at the Scone carnival, he was reminded of his obligations under that rule.
