August 2012 Newsletter GEORGE WREN trophy evening 6 th September. To be held together with our regular meeting. Refreshments have been arranged & will be paid for out of club funds. The bar will be open all evening for the purchase of drinks. The rules for the event, as I understand them, will be as follows: Each member may show two boats. Each boat must: Not have received the award previously. Be the work of the entrant, bought kits & major restorations included. Assistance with the running gear is allowed but not the general appearance. A member may show boats not conforming to the above, but for display only & not for judging. In addition to the George Wren Trophy, there will be an award for the best sailing craft. We will confirm the time that we can arrive in due course but we hope it to be about 6:30 pm. Sunday 1 st July 2012 The first couple of pictures this month show Dave Partlett s Sea Commander, and son Nicholas Club 500 boat. The Sea Commander has recently been re-kitted by Jokita and has been the subject of a build log in one of the magazines and presents an attractive model out on the water. Dave s model is an original 70 s boat which he rescued from a skip and rebuilt. It seems a while since we last saw a club 500 on the lake. Leaving a long curving wake, Paul Izzard s red, white and blue boat speeds past, disturbing the peace of our Sunday morning. Page 1 of 7
I got Nic Panter to run his Fairy Huntsman round the one of the orange buoys on the lake to get this action photo of his well built model. Nic is in the middle of his latest project, a steam powered biggie, should be interesting!! With two blasts from its siren, Queen Mary leaves on a trip across a choppy North Atlantic to New York. Jason has been continuing to add to his huge model of the Cunard liner, which is now fitted with a sound generator module. The high superstructure on this model makes it a handful in gusty conditions but Jason did well to show her to best advantage. Page 2 of 7
The last pictures this month show Peter Gilpin s Elco 80ft PT boat, built by Paul Izzard from an Italieri plastic kit. The photo s show the detail finish on this relatively small model far better than I can explain. The kit has been modified to radio control, and has a triple motor and rudder set up. The first run is always an anxious time, but this little beauty ran well from the word go. Although an American designed and built boat the all important hull was developed by the English pre-war speedboat designer Scott-Payne. I m packing my bucket and spade to go on holiday at the beginning of August, so will not be at the next club meeting, but I should get down to the lake for the Scale & Sail day. Dave... Page 3 of 7
Sunday 10 th June 2012 FIESTA FUN EVENT By Mike Robinson Due to lack of sailing events in the summer months, mainly due to weed problems, we decided to try an impromptu event on Sunday. The weather forecast prior to the weekend was for torrential rain over three days, so the prospect was doubtful. However, despite some light rain on my way to the lake, the morning started off overcast but dry and brightened up as the day wore on and there was no weed in the lake. Seven skippers turned out for the event and with a fairly constant breeze we set a triangle and sausage course starting from the right hand bank. We completed eight races in the session and the usual contenders were at the front of the fleet but everyone enjoyed the morning which is what it is all about, and weed permitting we will try again in August as the sailing programme does not start again until 9 th September, apart from our next visit to Watermead on 22 nd July. The full result being: 1 Iain Smith (16) 5 Nick Panter (41) 2 Mike Robinson (17) 6 Dave Smith (49) 3 John Cox (23) 7 Don Naybour (53) 4 Paul Izzard (27) Sunday 22 nd July 2012 INTER CLUB 1METRE ROUND 3 WATERMEAD MBC By Mike Robinson Summer is here at last! We were greeted with clear skies and a fresh top-suit breeze at Aylesbury. On this occasion, Two Islands Club was not invited so we were able to enjoy a friendly but still competitive morning s sailing. With a fairly large fleet (14 boats) and mixed ability skippers it was inevitable that there would be some coming-together; however, it is supposed to be a fun event, not a National Championship, so one has to grin and bear it on occasions. Iain Smith, myself and Nick Panter represented the Oxford MBC and overall we gave a good account of ourselves, coming second, third and eighth. However, the winner by a clear margin was our old friend Noel Donaldson. The full result was as follows:- 1 Noel Donaldson (11) 8 Nick Panter (72) 2 Iain Smith (29) 9 Martin Samuel (82) 3 Mike Robinson (34) 10 Peter Stevens (95) 4 Terry Rowe (37) 11 Bill Brooks (97) 5 David Isitt (40) 12 Mathew Evens (98) 6 Dini Taylor (60) 13 Paulo (112) 7 Peter Dunnett (62) 14 Andy Evens (118) The full results are on the following page: Page 4 of 7

Oxford Model Boat Club. Minutes of meeting held 5 th July 2012. DEATH OF A MEMBER. It is with sadness that the secretary announced the death from cancer of Dusty Miller who was a great supporter of Fiesta sailing. The secretary attended the funeral today. There were no flowers by request but relatives asked donation to Cancer Research. Dusty who had a very dry sense of humour will be sadly missed by all members. Members voted that a donation of 25 should be made to Cancer Research and this will be attended to by the Treasurer and Secretary. Secretary s report. The George Wren Trophy will be awarded at a special event at this venue on 6 th September 2012. The event will follow the format agreed at an earlier meeting. Iain Smith volunteered to arrange catering through a service provided by Sainsbury s. Funds were voted by membership to cover the cost. The Secretary confirmed that 2 tables have been allocated by the Witney Model and Collectors club who are arranging an event at The King s School, Hailey Road Witney on 20 th October 2012. The two tables will not be together but this might well be to our advantage as it leads to double exposure of the clubs activities. Members are urged to support the event and the efforts of the club officers. Members were then reminded of the events that would be held in the current month. The secretary proposed one off Fiesta event on the small pond on Sunday 8 th July which had no event scheduled other than a normal Sunday sailing. This was agreed by membership. Arrangements of the Wychwood Forrest event which the club is attending with the have a go boats are well in hand. The treasurer is arranging the pool but details are yet to be announced. Membership proposed that any proceeds raised by the club should be donated to the organisers which in turn will go to support the green project. Treasure s Report. The Treasurer is on holiday so no details of club funds are available. Scale Secretary s report. The scale side of the club is being well attended with a series of new models being seen. The Scale Sunday is being very well supported and members are urged to continue their support. The meeting closed at 19:55 hrs. Page 6 of 7
