I. 14 th DAWN IN EDUCATION SPELLING BEE COMPETITION 2018 DAWN Newspaper conducted the first DAWN Spelling Bee Competition in 2005, as part of its DAWN In Education Programme, first ever Newspaper In Education Programme in Pakistan. This project has been the first in South Asia to gain recognition from INMA (International Newspaper Marketing Association). It has been termed as one of the Newspaper Industry s best idea for the young. After conducting twelve successful Spelling Bee Competitions in Pakistan the stage is set for the 14 th DAWN In Education Spelling Bee 2018. The competition will comprise of three levels: LEVEL- I: POOLROUNDS In this round the school teams will compete amongst each other. One team per pool will emerge as a winner and qualify for Level II. Note: One Pool Round will be held in Skardu for schools from Skardu & Gilgit and other adjoining cities of Gilgit Baltistan. LEVEL-II: REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP The pool winning teams will qualify for this round. At this stage the teams will break up and participants will compete on an individual basis. Individuals (comprising of the Regional Champion, 1 st & 2 nd Runnerup) per age group from each region (Islamabad, Lahore & Karachi) will move on to Level III. LEVEL-III: NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 9 students per age group (which will include the Regional Champion, 1 st & 2 nd Runners up per region) will compete in the National Championship in Islamabad in November 2018.

II. PARTICIPATION Criteria for Participation The competition is open to schools only. A branch of a school will be treated as an individual school. Each school can send a team of 3 students per age group. Schools can participate in any one, two or all three age groups given below: 09-11 Yrs: Eligibility to be part of this age group would mean that the nominated participants should be 9 years and above but should not turn 12 by December 31, 2018. Students born in year 2007, 2008 & 2009 would be eligible for 9-11 age group. 12-14 Yrs: Eligibility to be part of this age group would mean that the nominated participants should be 12 years and above but should not turn 15 by December 31, 2018. Students born in year 2004, 2005 & 2006 would be eligible for 12-14 age group. 15-17 Yrs:Eligibility to be part of this age group would mean that the nominated participants should be 15 years and above but should not turn 18 by December 31, 2018, Students born in year 2001, 2002 & 2003 would be eligible for 15-17 age group. III. CONTEST DETAILS Level I: Pool Rounds Level I will be conducted in 3 rounds: Buzz Words Round: Each team will be required to spell 4 words. Each correct spelling scores 5 points. If a team spells all 4 words correctly they would be awarded 5 bonus points. Total points to be scored: 25 Double Sting Round: Each team will be required to spell 2 words. Each correct spelling scores 5 points. If a team spells both the words correctly they would be awarded 5 bonus points. Total points to be scored: 15 To Bee or Not to Bee Round: (Optional) In a situation where there is a tie between teams competing in a pool, this round will be conducted. One word will be asked of each team and will be conducted till one top scoring team emerges as a winner. Level II: Regional Championship Top scoring teams per pool will reach Level II. At this stage the teams will break up and participants will compete on an individual basis. Each participant will be required to spell 2 words. Each correct spelling scores 5 points. Level II will be conducted till three individuals emerge as the Regional Champion, 1 st & 2 nd Runners up respectively. Level III: National Championship 9 Participants (comprising of the Regional Champion, 1 st & 2 nd Runners up from each region i.e. Islamabad, Lahore & Karachi will participate in this level. For the National championship round structure, refer to the next page.

Round Structure for the National Competition 2018 (Subject to minor changes) ROUND 1 Choose your Category Students have a choice to choose their words from: a) DAWN b) Arts (Music, Dance, Film, Theatre & Literature) c) Science & technology d) Borrowed words (from different languages) 5 words will be asked from each participant. A participant can choose only 2 words per category. A participant can also change the category for each word asked. Scoring: For each correct spel ling 5 poi nts will be awarded If a participant spells all 5 words correctly, 5 Bonus points will be awarded there will be no negative marking Maximum score: 30 points Note: Total time to spell each word will be 40 seconds, with 20 seconds to ask questions about the word and 20 seconds to spell the word On completion of ROUND 1 top 6 scorers will qualify for ROUND 2. {Incase of a tie To Bee or Not to Bee Round (i.e. the Sudden Death Round) will be played} ROUND 2 Rapid Bee Each participant will be given 40 seconds to spell as many words as they can. Participants will be allowed to ask questions about the word. Scoring: Scores from ROUND 1 will be carried forward For each correct spelling 5 points will be awarded There will be negative marking (-2 points for each incorrect spelling) Note: Participants have the option to pass the word twice ONLY.

Participants will only be allowed to retrace if he/she has not completely finished spelling the word. Participants should be warned of the speed at which they are to give the spelling; if they spell too fast in order to fit in as many words as possible, they may not spell clearly and hence no points will be awarded. The Pronouncer will indicate whether the spelling is CORRECT or INCORRECT after every spelt word during the 40 second session with each participant. In order to ensure that there has been no error on the part of the Pronouncer, the results would be tallied with the judges on stage & the DAWN person in the control room after the 40 second session is over with each participant. In case of any discrepancy or confusion the audio replay would be referred to. The scores will be announced only after the front desk panel and the control room, are in agreement to the scores. In case there is a disagreement the DAWN Moderator reserves the right to take a decision after consultation with the DAWN Spelling Bee Team of all three stations. Please note that this will apply in case of any scoring discrepancy in all the rounds. After the conclusion of Round Two, the National Champion, 1 st & 2 nd runner up positions would be declared on the basis of their cumulative score of Round One & Two. Round Three would ONLY be played in case of a tie. It will be played on the lines of the Sudden Death Round.

IV. RULES&GUIDELINES The participating schoolshave toabideby thefollowingrules: 1. Once the schools have nominated their participants, the will be no changes in the names of the participants. Incase and participant/s fails to appear on the day of the competition the rest of the team will not be disqualified and will be allowed to participate even if it is a one 2. The Speller in the 3 member team per age group will be nominated by the school. 3. The teams have to come in their proper school uniforms for the competition. 4. Each team will receive 3 Spelling Bee badges at the DAWN Spelling Bee Reporting Desk on the day of the competition. The badges have to be Worn by the participants at all times. 5. The DAWN In Education.Spelling Bee will be an oral competition and will be conducted in rounds 6. Participants will not be allowed to write the word on a piece of paper. 7. After the Pronouncer gives the team a word the total time given to each team will be 40 seconds. From this time the team will have only 20 seconds to ask questions about the word and 20 seconds to spell the word. If the speller starts spelling the word before the 40 second mark has reached he/she shall be allowed to complete the spelling the word, but he/she will not be allowed to retrace. 8. The teams may ask the Pronouncer to repeat the word, define it, use it in a sentence, provide the origin and part of speech. The Pronouncer shall grant all such requests in the first 20 seconds only. On completion of the first 20 seconds a buzzer will sound and on the completion of the remaining 20 seconds another buzzer will sound. 9. All three members will be allowed to ask questions from the Pronouncer. But only the speller will spell the word. 10. The speller must spell the word only after consulting the team members. The team members will NOT be allowed to prompt or stop the speller once he/she begins spelling the word.

11. The speller must pronounce the word, spell it and pronounce the word again after spelling. Once a word has been spelt completely the speller will not be allowed to spell again. 12. The team will not be allowed to retrace if the word asked has been completely spelt and pronounced once. 13. The speller should spell slowly so that the jury can hear every letter clearly. Be very carefull with letter that have similar sounds such as a, e, b, d, t, m, & n etc. 14. Having started to spell a word, a speller may stop and start spelling again after taking permission of the Pronouncer to start over. In retracing the speller will be allowed to change the sequence of the letters only if the speller has not completed spelling the word and only if time remains. 15. In the event that an action of a participant or supporter of a team is deemed inappropriate by the moderator, the moderator may disqualify the team(s) involved. 16. A new word will be asked of a team if there is an objection on its pronunciation. 17. In the event of any disruptions, the team that is disrupted will get a new word and new start time of 40 seconds. 18. The Judge will announce the beginning and conclusion of each round. 19. Appeals, if any, have to be submitted to the DAWN representative and will be entertained by the Jury at the end of each round. The official appeal forms will be available with the DAWN representative present inside the Hall. 20. Appeals may be filed only by the respective school s Spelling Bee Coordinator. Jury will not entertain appeals from individuals seeking to dislodge another team or participant from the competition. 21. The Jury will comprise of one Pronouncer and three Judges, out of which one will be the DAWN Moderator. 22. The Jury is in complete control of the competition. Their decision will be final on all questions and appeals. 23. The scores will be displayed on the Scoreboard.

24. Parents and teachers are not allowed on stage. 25. Teams will be required to stay quiet when a team is being questioned. Comments and remarks of all kinds to other teams are prohibited. 26. The audience must NOT prompt or call out during the competition. They will be required to maintain pin drop silence at the time of the competition. NOTE: KINDLY NOTE THAT THE DAWN SPELLING BEE WORDLIST PROVIDED TO THE PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS IS JUST A REFERENCE GUIDE AND WORDS WILL BE ASKED FROM AND OUT OF THE WORDLIST. IT IS TO BE NOTED THAT EXTERNAL SOURCES WILL BE USED IN THE CONTEST.

VIII. DAWN SPELLING BEE WORDLIST DAWN Spelling Bee Word list will be provided to schools for their participants. A Phonetic Chart will also be provided with the wordlist. THE WORD LIST WILL SERVE AS A REFERENCE GUIDE FOR THE PARTICIPANTS PREPARATION FOR THE COMPETITION. BUT IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE WORDS FROM EXTERNAL SOURCES WILL ALSO BE USED IN THE COMPETITION. It should also be noted that there can be instances in the competition when a certain word can be asked from participants in all three age groups but at varying difficulty levels.
