live happily ever active Lifeguard Qualifications Being a Lifeguard is not a role that anyone can do. You need to be a strong swimmer, calm under pressure and be committed to maintaining your lifeguard qualification. This document must be completed and signed off by your Line Manager prior to being permitted to Lifeguard unsupervised. All lifeguard qualifications must comply with the industry guidance contained within the HSE publication Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools. Virgin Active will accept the following lifeguarding qualifications: RLSS- IQL National Pool Lifeguard Qualification. HABC Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding (QCF). STA Professional Award for Pool Lifeguard (QCF). If you have obtained your qualification prior to employment with Virgin Active, you must provide proof of this qualification and also that you have attended competency training within the last month. Please show this to your Line Manager along with this sign off sheet. Qualification and Competency Training Line Manager Sign Off I,, am the Line Manager to and I confirm I have received and reviewed (Name of Line Manager) (Name of Lifeguard) s Lifeguard Qualification and confirm the Lifeguard Qualification is accepted by Virgin Active as a valid Lifeguard Qualification. (Name of Lifeguard) (Name of Lifeguard) Name Job Role Club Date Signed If you do not have a valid Lifeguard Qualification your Line Manager will book you onto the next available Lifeguard Qualification course through My Journey. If you haven t attended competency training within the last month, you must be competency tested prior to commencing your first shift on your own. This must be arranged by your line manager. Date of Lifeguard Qualification booked onto (if required): Before attending the Lifeguard Qualification you need to pass the below Swim Test. This test must be seen by the Swim Lesson Manager or your General Manager. If you attend the Lifeguard Qualification without passing the below test, you will be sent back to your club. To enter and climb out of the pool unaided without the use of the steps. 200m continuous swim with (100m with a front stroke - 100m completed with a backstroke). 50m completed in 60seconds using a front stroke. To submerse and touch the bottom of the deepest part of the pool (feet first touch not acceptable). Completion of 50 metres in breast stroke, legs only, using a kickboard. The breast stroke legs must be of a progressive standard (defined below). Please note that for pools with depths beyond 1.5m, a depth test must also be undertaken to recover an approved submersible manikin and that the staff member is successful on the first attempt. How to Ensure Pool Safety on Shift Once you have completed How to Ensure Pool Safety on Shift please answer these questions. When would you need additional Lifeguard cover? List 3 Physical Hazards? List 3 People Hazards? List 3 Task & Rescuing Hazards? List 3 Safety Related requirements that bathers need to know? Lifeguard Duties & Responsibilities List three duties and responsibilities of a Lifeguard? What should you do if you discover a sharp object (such as a needle or syringe) in the pool area?

How often do you need to attend Lifeguard Training? What s the procedure should you be unable to make Lifeguard Training? Write below any questions you have about your clubs NOP and discuss with your line manager. What is the name of the morning and afternoon checks that you have to complete? How often should you have a supervision break? What are your Uniform Standards? Where do you wear your name badge? How should your hair be kept? What jewellery is permitted to be worn? What is the purpose of having a radio? What do the following codes mean? 99: 100: Which job roles carry a radio?

List below some phrases that should not be said over the radio. How many store cupboards do you have in your club? Where are they located? What are the codes for the doors or where are the keys kept? Opening Procedures What is the first thing you are expected to do when your shift begins? How do you enter the club when arriving first thing in the morning? (Do not write any codes down here.) How much time do you have to do your opening checks before your club opens? Closing Procedure How many fire exits do you have on your poolside? When is it appropriate for you to leave the poolside for the night? How many people are required to be present when closing the club? List the key responsibilities/jobs of a Lifeguard before closing the club? Where is your rota kept? How often is it updated?

How to Deliver Pool Ratios to Members Once you have completed How to Deliver Pool Ratios to Members please answer these questions. Please take some time to read through your club s NOP to ensure you know your adult to child ratios for your pools. Please list all the Adult to Child Ratios, which are allowed in the pool? Shark Test What is a Shark test? What is the criteria for the Shark test? What is the name of the two different types of Shark test we offer? What are the two age ranges of the Shark test? Below, write down the criteria for the two different types of test we offer 1 2 Who is qualified to take a Shark test? Write below the days and times your Shark tests take place at your club? Who books children in for a Shark test and where is this done? What form needs to be completed by the parent?

Once a child passes a Shark test what are they issued with? How would you tell on the poolside which Shark test a child has passed? Where are the Family swim timetables displayed in your club? Where is the file kept of the children who have passed their test? On what occasions would you need to refer to this? If a child does not pass the Shark test how long do they need to wait until they are able to re-take the test? What is the procedure should a Shark swimmer from another club be visiting your club? What is the minimum age to use the Spa, Sauna or Steam Room? When are the peak times in your club? List some tasks that need to be completed before your club peak time. What is family swim? Write below your family swim times:

What times do swimming lessons commence each day? How do you manage the lanes when swimming lessons are on? What is the name of the Swim Manager in your club? What different types of swimming lessons does your club offer? What pool do your swimming lessons take place in? How are you notified when a pool party has been scheduled? What measures do you have to take when preparing the pool for a pool party? What is the maximum capacity of each pool party?

Pool Normal Operating Procedures (NOP) Once you have completed How To - New Aspects on Revised Pool NOP and How To - Lifeguard Pool Drawing Training please answer these questions. What is the length of your pool? What is the depth of your pool? What is your maximum bather capacity of your pool? Pool Testing Competency Sign Off Once you have completed How To Conduct a Pool Test for Lifeguards and Service Managers on My Journey your Building Service Manager must watch you complete 2 pool tests to make sure you are accurate with your readings and comfortable completing the tests. Your Building Services Manager will make a note of the pool tests they observe below. Date of Pool Test 1 Building Service Manager Observing Club Pool Test Passed? NPS What does NPS stand for? If someone scored your club as an 8 what category of customer would they fall into? Where does your club currently score for NPS and for Service? List ways that you can positively affect the NPS results in your club? Scrums Where are the scrums held? How often are scrums held? Who attends? What is discussed? The Virgin Standard Further work Please complete this task within your first month in you role. Ask your line manager for a blank copy of the Standards audit for the poolside and complete it yourself, and then check it against the last audit done by the Service Manager or General Manager. Have you noticed anything extra that was not on the previous audit, are there any jobs that are on both audits? Discuss these with your Service Manager.

What duties does your role include in addition to supervising the pool and when can these be undertaken?
