Youth Mentoring Youth Mentoring July 2018 By Ted Hildabrand Frequently I hear outdoor sports people talking about the lack of youth involvement in the shooting sports, hunting and fishing. It is a real negative cultural shift in our country and in other countries. It gets depressing at times during these meetings and discussions on trying to develop ideas and programs to correct it. There are no easy answers, but I feel the answer lies within all of us. Discuss it with the person you see in the mirror each morning and evening. However, recently I have seen real good positive activity and reasons for celebration at our club. Just recently we saw the Bedner ladies, Alexandria & Gabriella at our Monday pistol shoot. Both fine ladies are veterans and councilors of the NRA Whittington NRA Camp in Arizona. They were the stimulus for the Taylor Grant which has sent Tyler Zenger from our club to Whittington this year. Based upon the reports we have received Tyler is really enjoying the camp and shooting sports. Then when we see frequent use this summer of the Marisco Rifle Range by coaches Dave Willard and Tom Benedict. Dave and Tom are spending their time teaching and supporting youth in 22 small bore (22 rim fire) rifle shooting. You can also see grandfathers like Lee Kirchner teaching his granddaughters to shoot at the Plinking Range. All this youth club activity is good! What have you done this year to mentor your grandchildren, sons & daughters, nephews and nieces, neighborhood youth and others in the outdoor sports? Please consider taking a youth fishing, hunting and shooting? Work it out with the person you see in the mirror. It is not somebody else s problem it is our problem. 9

Black Powder BLACK POWDER SURVEY METALIC CARTRIDGE AND MUZZLE-LOADING SPORT- ING ARMS The Black Powder Committee of the DMSC is currently conducting a survey to determine the total number of members that are interested in becoming part of the Black Powder Fraternity. This discipline will include the use of flint and percussion as well as metallic cartridge rifles, pistols and shotguns from the earliest colonial era through all of America s military engagements from the French and Indian War, our American Revolution, War of 1812, Mexican War, the American Civil War, and the Western American Indian conflicts Whether you patch a round ball, load a military minie ball, shoot a modern inline or a black powder cartridge gun, we would like to see you on the range as a shooter or a competitor. If you would like to demonstrate your competitive spirit with the use of these antiques or exercise your hidden enthusiasm for black powder, your participation is welcome. To register, send an email or call: Ron Watton 724-941-5891 watton2@verizon.net John Nipar 412-835-7629 jlthenips@aol.com Dave Willard 724-941-6620 dwillard49@gmail.com 10

America s Rifle Challenge AMERICA S RIFLE CHALLENGE (ARC) 2018 Was a Very Good Year The ARC program here at DMSC concluded its third year of operation, and by all accounts, it appears to be well received by the membership. For those of you who are still not familiar with ARC, it is an action rifle program developed by the NRA. Participants use mostly AR style rifles and enjoy a variety of stages quite different from traditional bullseye shooting. Distances include 200, 100, 50, 25, and 7 yards four shooting positions are used firing from behind barricades multiple magazine changes and shooting at multiple targets. With origins in 2016, the program began with two Basic level matches. This allowed the ARC cadre to gain some sea legs and to measure interest a total of 25 participants came out for these two matches. In 2017 we again held two matches, but this time one was a Basic match and one was an Advanced match. By testing these waters, information was gathered on conducting a more challenging type event there was a slight increase to 29 participants. The ARC program ushered in the 2018 season with some bold initiatives: 10 matches total were held spread out over 7 days Introduction of a Clinic for participants new to action rifle matches we held 2 of these. 3 Basic Matches 3 Advanced Matches Introduction of a Two-Gun Match (rifle & pistol) we held 2 such events 120 participants took advantage of this exciting season The 2019 season will attempt to match or exceed what occurred in 2018. If you own an AR style rifle and are bored with just shooting from a bench, then take a hard look at ARC. Information is located on the website under the Program section and more detailed information can be found from the flyers contained in past 2018 issues of the Newsletter also located on the website. STAY TUNED FOR 2019 ARC PROGRAM INFORMATION IN UPCOMING ISSUES OF THE NEWSLETTERS - Hope to see more of you out having a really fun time with ARC 2019! 11

We ran two sequential 300 point, Perry style, matches to allow some participants to prepare for the PA state championships for Garand/Springfield/ Vintage discipline. Tom Morely leading the pack, demonstrating why he is now the state champion again. Dave Burd, out of pain, showing us how he really shoots. Thank you all for your cooperation and attention to the details of range safety. Bruce Ungar 12
