Greater Cleveland Conference play begins in the fourth week of the season and Solon will contend with Elyria in what will be the Comets third consecutive home game. The Defensive side of the coaching staff features coordinator Ed Bubonics, Defensive Line coaches Jeff Ames and Jerry Burris, and Secondary coaches Dave Mortland and Brian Wisniewski. Again in 2018, Wisniewski coordinates the Special Teams with Jake Voigt. REVIEWING THE RETURNEES Solon s 2018 team features 16 players that were either starters or alternates for the Comets a year ago. Sam Bubonics had 29 tackles as a starter at Safety and pulled in 22 receptions for 284 yards and a touchdown as a starter at Wide Receiver. Nate Miller started at Outside Linebacker and racked up 21 tackles. Pat McQuaide was an alternate at Quarterback where he completed 16 of 28 passes for 201 yards and one touchdown. Ron Carr, Wayne Chaney, Cade Cohen, and Nolan McNamara bring back a wealth of experience as starters on the Offensive Line in 2017 and Coach Kurt Gielink looks for big things out of these guys. (Continued on Page 4)

PAGE 4 REVIEWING THE RETURNEES (Continued from Page 3) Returning on the Defensive Line for the Comets are Yusef Russell, Nick Close, Nate Leskovec, and David Marbury. Russell posted 32 tackles in 2017 as a starter. Nick Close was an alternate for the defensive front and also spent time at Tight End. Leskovec returns as a three year starter for the defense and contributed 89 tackles at End and Tackle a year ago. His contributions to the team were awarded with a First Team All Ohio honor. After a full recovery from injury, Marbury returns as a two year starter at Defensive End and Tight End. Rounding out the list of Returnees is Grant McCurry. He alternated as a Wide Receiver and Safety. As a Safety, he put up 14 tackles and on the other side of the ball, he pulled down 14 receptions for 170 yards and one touchdown. SQUAD BREAKDOWN Solon s 2018 roster features 73 players. The squad breakdown shows 24 Seniors, 25 Juniors, 21 Sophomores, and 3 Freshmen. being taken very seriously by this group. During the offseason and throughout the summer, we have talked about having passion for the task at hand, said Head Coach Jim McQuaide. We all need to be certain, players and coaches alike, that we prepare and compete with the passion required of us. We must seize this tremendous opportunity to write our own successful page in the history of Solon Football. LEADING THE TEAM Elected by their teammates and coaches, four players will serve as Team Captains for the 2018 season. Recognized for their leadership, both on and off the football field were Sam Bubonics, Ron Carr, Nick Close, and Nate Leskovec. These four players are charged with setting the example for the team to follow throughout the season. Congratulations Sam, Ron, Nick, and Nate. OPPORTUNITIES AHEAD Hard at work since November 29, the Solon Comets are thrilled that the first game is finally only a few days away. Following the sixth game of the 2017 campaign, the Comets season spiraled in a downward direction and finished with the team losing four straight games to seal a 5-5 record. With a finish at number eleven in the Division I, Region 1 standings, Solon missed the playoffs for only the third time in 19 seasons. The first chance to put 2017 behind this team commences Friday night at Aurora s Veterans Stadium and while the competition will be fierce, the opportunity to forget about the past is THE OPPOSITION N.
