Central with a 2.5-game lead the Cubs are the first defending World Champions to be in first place in their division on August 1 in the last six seasons, as the 2011 San Francisco Giants began that month of August with a two-game lead in the N.L. West the Cubs are the first defending World Champions to have a better than twogame lead in their division on August 1 since the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies began that month of August with a six-game lead in the N.L. East. Overall, the Cubs are only the fourth defending World Champion to be in first place in their division on August 1 in the last 15 seasons, joining the 2011 Giants, 2009 Phillies and 2005 Red Sox. Furthermore, the Cleveland Indians wake up on August 1 with a 2.0-game lead in the A.L. Central 2017 marks only the third time in the last 15 seasons that both defending pennant winners have been in first place on August 1 the year after they played in the World Series, joining the 2011 Giants and Rangers and the 2005 Red Sox and Cardinals. SINCE THE ASG: The Cubs have emerged from the All-Star Break with a 13-3 record (.813), the second-best mark in the majors behind the Dodgers (13-2/.867). Cubs catcher Willson Contreras batted.321 (27-for-84) with seven home runs and 19 RBI in 22 July games Elias notes that it has been over 20 years since a Cubs catcher had that many homers and RBI in a calendar month Scott Servais hit eight homers and had 18 RBI for Chicago in August of 1995. BRYANT BLASTS: Kris Bryant on Sunday belted his 20th homer of the season, making him the first Cub in franchise history to hit at least 20 homers in each of his first three major league seasons moreover, he is just the fourth Cub ever with three 20-homer seasons by his age 25 campaign or younger Bryant, who hit 26 homers in 2015 and 39 in 2016, joins Ron Santo (four times, 1961-65), Anthony Rizzo (three times, 2013-15) and Billy Williams (three times, 1961-63). SOLID BAT, SOLID GLOVE: Anthony Rizzo needs one more long ball to become just the third Cubs left-handed hitter to record four 25- homer campaigns he would join Billy Williams (10 times from 1961-72) and Bill Nicholson (five times between 1940-47). Rizzo enters today with a career-high 84-game errorless streak at first base dating to April 24 that s the longest errorless streak by a Cubs first baseman in 25 years since Mark Grace went 102-straight games without an error at first during the 1992 campaign. WHERE THERE S A WILL : Willson Contreras, who has reached safely in 15-straight games, has hit 16 home runs this season, the most for any N.L. catcher and tied for second-most among all major league backstops with the Yankees Gary Sanchez and Seattle s Mike Zunino Kansas City s Salvador Perez leads with 21 home runs this season. Contreras.825 OPS this season is third among N.L. catchers since making his debut on June 17 of last year, Contreras has produced an.834 OPS that s the third-highest of any N.L. catcher behind the Dodgers Yasmani Grandal (.854) and the Giants Buster Posey (.852). THERE S A WADE: With his save Sunday, Cubs closer Wade Davis has extended his single-season franchise record for consecutive save chances converted, as he s been successful in his first 22 opportunities this year that surpasses Flash Gordon in 2001, Ryan Dempster in 2005 and Carlos Marmol in 2012, all of whom had 19-straight successful save chances in a single campaign. The franchise mark for consecutive save chances converted is held by Dempster (26 straight in the 2005-06 seasons) Davis 22- straight save conversions are tied for second-longest in club history overall.
