It s the first time since 1984 that the Panthers have started a season 11-1. Senior Delaney Clesen was named tournament MVP while Kate Yeazel, Lindsey Zitzke and Amanda Orchard were honored as All-Tournament selections. BIRD WATCHING Pitt looks to extend its six-match home winning streak this Thursday, Sept. 25 against LIU Brooklyn at 7:00 p.m. and into Sunday, Sept. 28 as they kick off ACC play by hosting the Eagles of Boston College. The BC game will take place at 1:00 p.m. and be broadcast on ESPN3. Live stats and video will be available for both games through www. pittsburghpanthers.com. LIU Brooklyn enters Thursday s match with an overall record of 9-4. The Blackbirds went 2-1 in last weekend s Spartan Invitational, including a five-set win over No. 25 Michigan State and a four-set win over No. 28 Western Kentucky. The win over Michigan State was the first win over a nationally-ranked program in school history. Senior Annika Foit leads the attack for the Blackbirds and was named tournament MVP at the Spartan Invitational after finishing the weekend with 47 kills, 40 digs and five service aces. She was also named Molten/ NEC Player of the Week for the third time this season and the 12th of her career. BOSTON COLLEGE dropped two tough matches to Northeastern and Harvard at the New England Challenge last weekend to fall to 5-6 on the season. The Eagles have three potent offensive threats as Katty Workman, Julia Topor and Sol Calvete all have over 100 kills on the season. Brittany Pavich isn t far behind with 94. Courtney Castle leads the team in both digs and service aces and also ranks second in assists. Boston College will face ACC newcomer Louisville on Friday, Sept. 26 before traveling to Pittsburgh for Sunday s match. @Pitt PittACC 1

As of September 23, the team is third in the nation in assists per set (14.13) and fourth in kills per set (14.87). Sophomore Jenna Potts is making a name for herself on the national stage, as she ranks seventh overall for the second straight week in blocks, averaging 1.61 blocks per set. Teammate Amanda Orchard also ranks in the top-20 nationally, as she sits in the No. 12 spot with a.459 hitting percentage. FOR THE RECORD After recording two aces during the Pitt Panther Invitational, senior setter Lindsey Zitzke is just three aces away from 153, making her Pitt s all-time career leader in that category. Currently, Zitzke ranks ninth in the ACC in aces per set. Having notched 134 kills through the first 12 matches of the season, senior Jess Wynn is only 39 kills away from 1,000 for her career. She needs 81 to reach 1,042 and join the top- 10 all-time kill leaders in Pitt history. Wynn s 3.72 kills per set are good for sixth in the ACC so far this year. BRING OUT THE BROOMS 10 of Pitt s 11 victories so far this season have come by way of a sweep. It is the first time since 1988 that the program s first 10 wins of the season have been shutout performances. That year, the Panthers first 13 wins of the season came in straight sets. This year also marks the first time since 1984 that the Panthers have only lost three sets or fewer through their first 12 matches of the year. Pitt dropped only four sets through the first 12 games this season. PITT S RECORD WHEN... All-time leader - 251 BUILDING BLOCKS Jenna Potts has steadily racked up the blocks so far this season, leading Pitt in that category in eight of the first twelve contests. The 6 3 sophomore s 1.61 blocksper-set average is second in the ACC. Her 2013 total of 140 blocks was the tenthbest single season total in Pitt volleyball history, and she now sits only 53 blocks shy of the career top-10 list (251). ATLANTIC COAST ELITE After twelve matches, The Panthers are tied for the most wins in the ACC while leading the league in assists (14.13/set), aces (1.76/set), and kills (14.87/ set). Pitt also checks in at second in the league in digs (15.37/set), opponent hitting percentage (.129), and hitting percentage (.273). Three Panthers rank in the top-five of four individual categories, and Pitt was represented in the top-10 of five out of the six major statistical categories conference-wide. IN FISH WE TRUST Entering his second season as head coach, Dan Fisher has the Pitt volleyball program heading in the right direction. With a combined record of 30-15 at Pitt thus far, Fisher s impact can already be felt as the team s 19 wins last season were the most since the program won 20 games in 2009. The Panthers also won four more conference games last season in their inaugural ACC debut (11-9), than they had in their final Big East Season (7-8). OFF AND RUNNING Pitt started its season 3-0 for the first time since going 5-0 to open the 2011 campaign. The Panthers defeated all three opponents they faced in the Hampton Inn Invitational last weekend by a combined tally of 9-0. Sophomore Maria Genitsaridi took Tournament MVP honors, and along with senior Delaney Clesen, represented Pitt on the All-Tournament Team. SERVICE WITH A SMILE Pitt leads all ACC schools with its mark of1.76 aces per set. In fact, Pitt sports two of the top ten individual service ace leaders in the league in Delaney Clesen (.50/set) and Lindsey Zitzke (.37/set). Clesen s proficiency with oneand-done service checks in at a national leve, ranking her 25th in the nation. CAN YOU DIG IT? With her combined 32 digs at the Hampton Inn Invitational, senior Delaney Cle- SEASON NEWS AND NOTES sen vaulted from sixth to second all-time in program history with 1,161 for her career. Clesen will likely finish her career with the second-most digs in Pitt history, as Megan McGrane has held the top spot in that category since 2005 with 2,424. THE ROAD AHEAD Pitt s scheduled conference opponents this season went a combined 263-167 overall in 2013. Three ACC teams are ranked in the AVCA Coaches Preseason Poll, and conference-newcomer Louisville was a perfect 18-0 in league play last season. OLD FRIENDS... Pitt returns substantial experience including eight starters and 11 letterwinners. Returning players include 2014 All-ACC Preaseason Team selectee Jessica Wynn, who tallied a team-best 410 kills. Rising senior and USA Collegiate National Team participant Delaney Clesen also returns, bringing a career total of 1,122 digs heading into her senior year....and FROSH FACES Three new Panthers have joined the team, each after decorated high school careers. Outside hitter Mariah Bell (Moorpark, Calif.), middle hitter Kelsey O Neill (Skokie, Ill.), and Pittsburgh-native Angela Seman compose this season s group of incoming freshmen. Mariah Bell, who has seen increased playing time, ADVENTURES ABROAD The Panthers had two players participate for their respective national teams this past summer. Delaney Clesen participated in the USA Girls Junior National Championships, and Maria Genitsaridi is a two-year member of the Greek National Team. Second-year head coach Dan Fisher traveled to Pula, Croatia as the head coach of the BIP/USA Development Team participating in the 2014 European Global Challenge. 2013 IN REVIEW Pitt capped off its first season in the ACC with a 19-14 record, including an 11-9 mark in ACC play. The Panthers ended their season on a six-match winning streak and finished ranked fifth in the conference standings after being picked to finish 13th in the preseason polls. @Pitt PittACC 3
