Pride of the Arbuckles Summer Musical Note Parents, Thank you for a great first year at Davis. I am incredibly excited for another. I have been putting together the marching schedule for the fall. Most everything on the calendar will not change, there may be a couple of additions. There will be a pre-band camp for all first year marching band students and all students that are members of the leadership team. This will be two days of learning how to march and learning pep-tunes. The time spent during these two days is to help your child be ready for full band camp to begin. Please make every effort to have your child at the pre-camp. Here are a few notes about the calendar. The following items on the calendar are listed and are required for every member: Daily s: Students are expected to be in rehearsal every day with their instrument (with all parts), music, and pencil. Evening Band s: There is an evening rehearsal scheduled once each week for the entire band. These are required; students should plan to take off from work on that day for the entire semester. Grades: Attendance will be taken at all rehearsals. A grade will be given for attendance. A grade of 0 will be given if the student does not attend. Each class period and rehearsal is worth 10 points. contests, football games and other performances will be worth 150 to 200 points. s with special guests will be worth more points as these people are being brought in to help make the ensemble better. Absences - I know there are a few students that are involved in outside things, like dance and other school sponsored activities that will interfere with some evening rehearsals, please talk to me as certain nights are more important than others. Students that have another activity are expected to show up if their activity is canceled and are expected to practice outside of school to not fall behind during marching season. If a student misses because they are sick or have a doctor s appointment, I must be contacted by the parent and not the student. If you have a family vacation, church camp, etc. planned that will cause your student to miss any part of band camp, please notify me as soon as possible. I encourage the students to turn in a note from their doctor for the absence to insure that it is excused. Please note that Social Media is NOT an acceptable form of notification. The parent must notify me by calling the school office or e-mailing me at school the day of or before the absence. We will be outside in August. It will be hot. Your child s health and well-being are very important. There are a few things that you can do to make sure that your child is successful during all rehearsals. Hydration Please make sure your child drinks plenty of water. They should bring water to every rehearsal. I suggest getting a large water jug that can hold plenty of water and ice. Encourage your child to drink water not just during rehearsal. Limit the number of sugary drinks they have at lunch and during the evenings, this will help them stay hydrated at all times.
Food Please make sure your child is eating. Breakfast is important every day. Even if your child does not like eating breakfast encourage them to have something every morning. Avoid eating a lot of sugar before and during practices. You can send snacks with your child to longer rehearsals. Sleep Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep. If your child gets plenty of sleep it will help them be able to make the most of every rehearsal. Clothing Make sure your child wears proper clothing to be out in the heat. Your child should not wear sweatpants, jeans, coats, dark colored clothing, flip flops, or sandals to rehearsals. It is suggested that they have a hat and sunglasses. Encourage them to wear sun screen. Prepare Now Encourage your child to be outside during the summer to help them be use to the heat when band camp begins. The following is a list of expectations for all rehearsals: Students will be silent during rehearsal with both their mouth and instrument when instruction is being given. Students will have a good attitude about band and instruction that is given. Students will show respect at all times to other students and the director. Students must be on time and have all of their materials, instrument, reeds, valve oil, mallets and sticks, pencil, marching coordinates, and music. By following these guidelines the students will receive the maximum benefit from the rehearsal both musically and in the grades they receive There is a band fee sheet enclosed. This details how much the band fee is and what each of the fees include. If you have any concerns about the financial aspect, please talk to Ms. Kiper or Mrs. Curtis, Band Booster President. Band booster meetings happen the first Thursday of every month at 6pm. Keep up to date with the calendar by checking the band page on the school website. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me through email, sarah.kiper@davis.k12.ok.us. I look forward to a fantastic fall semester, Sarah Kiper Director of Bands Davis, Oklahoma P.S. Band Fee First year high school band students, and any student that will need new marching shoes, your band fee will cover the following items: Shoes, Black Gloves. 2 Shirts. This band fee is $55. Students that have marching shoes that fit, your band fee will cover the following items: Black Gloves, 2 Shirts. This band fee is $25. All band fees are due the first week of marching band camp. Attention All Clarinet and Saxophone Players I highly encourage you to invest in a plastic reed. Traditional wooden reeds have a tendency to break faster during marching season. A plastic reed will last longer. I personally suggest the Bari or Fibercell brand. If you want to purchase one, you may go to wwbw.com and search for synthetic reeds. You may also talk to Ms. Kiper and we can order many of them together.
