Red Sox vs. Royals Last night s series-opening triumph gave the Royals a 3-1 lead in the season series after going 2-1 in The K back in June..these clubs have played 468 times since 1969, with each team winning 234 contests...kc is 105-129 all-time at Fenway. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 6/19 KC W, 4-2 Hammel Boyer 27,992 6/20 KC L, 3-8 Sale Strahm 25,983 6/21 KC W, 6-4 Soria Scott 30,826 7/28 @ Bos W, 4-2 Vargas Porcello 37,321 7/29 @ Bos 7/30 @ Bos LONG BALL BACKS VARGY--Sal Perez and Mike Moustakas provided the thump and Jason Vargas returned to his winning ways as the Royals secured their ninth straight win with a 4-2 victory in the series opener over the Red Sox last night...the win matched KC s longest winning streak of a season ago (August 14-23) and kept the Royals two behind the division leading Indians, who won their eighth straight last night, while expanding the lead for the second Wild Card spot to two games, only a half-game behind the Red Sox for the top spot...perez opened the scoring with a windshield shattering blast over the Green Monster, his 21st roundtripper of the year, then Moustakas clubbed his 30th blast in the fourth on the last of a 9-pitch battle with Rick Porcello...that was more than enough for Vargas, who won for league-lead tying 13th time and first since June 30, working 6.0 innings allowing five hits and a run with two walks and two K s...a quartet of relievers allowed just one run over the final 3.0 innings, with Kelvin Herrera finishing up for his 22nd save. INSIDE THE STREAK--Kansas City s current 9-game winning streak is the longest since the club won nine in a row last August 14-23...a win tonight would give the Royals their longest stretch of consecutive wins since June 7-18, 2014...the only frustration that has occurred during this streak is that KC started it three games out in the A.L. Central, but enter tonight two games removed since Cleveland has won its last eight contests...the Royals were in third place at the time the skein began, 1 1/2 games in back of Minnesota, but have flipped that to a 4-game edge over the Twins...Kansas City has outscored the opposition 67-27 during the streak, while out-homering opponents by a 20-2 count...the Royals have hit.316 as a unit, including a.444 mark with runners in scoring position (32-for-72)...not to be outdone, the pitching staff has a 2.65 ERA during the streak, while holding opposing hitters to a.236 average, while the pen has shined with a 0.75 ERA, allowing three earned runs in 36.0 innings. MOOOOOOOOSE!!!--Mike Moustakas capped a 9-pitch at bat against Rick Porcello with his 30th home run of the year last night, extending KC s lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning...honing in on the club record of 36 by Steve Balboni during the 1985 season, 30 home runs to this point translate to 48 over the remainder of the campaign... he s the fastest Royal ever to 30 blasts, well ahead of Gary Gaetti s pace from 1995 when he clubbed his 30th in the 117th game and 410th at bat...last night was KC s 101st game and Moose s 364th AB...Moustakas has hit the second most home runs in the Majors this year trailing only A.L. leader Aaron Judge and the N.L. s Giancarlo Stanton. PEN STREAK SNAPPED--Kansas City s bullpen was finally solved for an earned run when the Red Sox plated a seventh inning tally against Mike Minor, snapping the streak at 30.1 innings...despite that tally, in the last 12 games, Royals relievers have worked 49.1 innings in which they ve posted a 1.82 ERA, allowing 10 earned runs...kc has an American League best 1.91 bullpen ERA in July. NEXT STOP BALTIMORE--The Royals will closeout this 9-game journey with a 3-game stop in Camden Yards beginning Monday night...kansas City swept a 3-game set in Kauffman Stadium in May, but will be looking to snap a 4-game slide in Baltimore including being swept there last season. ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a 38-31 during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch. THE BEST IN LEATHER--The Royals played errorless ball last night for the fifth time in the last six games...kansas City continues to possess a Major League low 40 errors, with Miami next in the Majors with 44, while the Angels have the second fewest in the American League with 48...the Royals are currently on a pace to shatter the franchise record for fewest errors in a season, with the 162-game club mark of 85 set in 2013...the 1981 and 1994 squads had lower error totals of 72 and 80, respectively, but each were recorded in strike-shortened seasons...at the current pace this year, KC would commit just 64 errors. STREAKY TO SAY THE LEAST--Kansas City has now won nine in a row after losing four of the first five games of the last homestand and scuffling through a 1-7 stretch prior to this current streak...it has been a case of the streaks for KC all season as the Royals started the year with a 7-16 month of April that ended with a 9-game losing streak...after bottoming out at 10-20, KC had a 6-1 week from May 8-14, then went into another slide, going 10-13 over a 3-week stretch...a June 10 win in San Diego jumpstarted the next hot streak, with Kansas City going 18-6 prior to the 1-7 stretch that began in the final series prior to the All-Star break. THE ENERGIZER BUNNY--Alcides Escobar was hitless in three at bats last night, but has still batted.301 (47-for-156) in his last 41 games and by no coincidence the club has picked it up going an American League best 28-13 in that stretch...he s made a club-record 272 consecutive starts at shortstop dating back to September 26, 2015, the longest active streak in the Majors, according to the Elias Sports Bureau...the last MLB team to have the same starting SS in that many consecutive games was the Orioles, who had Miguel Tejada as their starting shortstop in 284 games from April 4, 2004 through August 20, 2005...should Esky get to 285, he will have the longest such streak since Cal Ripken started 2,216 consecutive games at SS for the Orioles from 1982 to 1996. AT THE HELM--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is in his seventh full season with the club, taking the reins on May 13, 2010...he enters tonight six games over.500 with a 603-597 record with Kansas City, which is a big accomplishment considering he had a 198-253 mark in his first two+ seasons in charge, but is since 405-344 (.541)...his win total has shattered Whitey Herzog s previous team mark of 410 wins (1975-79)...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is seventh among active managers is games (2,158) and wins (1,060)...his postseason record of 22-9 represents a.710 winning pct., which is tops among all managers who have been at the helm for at least 20 postseason games...he s also 2-0 in managing the American League All-Star team, winning in both Cincinnati ( 15) and San Diego ( 16), the last two times the home field advantage was determined by the All-Star outcome...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox s big league staff (1991-2002). vs. Red Sox (2017) vs. Red Sox (career) On Road (career) Rodriguez (career) Pomeranz (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Bonifacio.214 14 3 1 2 Butera.333 3 1 0 0 Cain.231 13 3 0 1 Escobar.231 13 3 0 0 Gordon.000 10 0 0 0 Gore Hosmer.333 12 4 1 2 Merrifield.286 14 4 0 2 Moss.400 5 2 0 0 Moustakas.267 15 4 2 4 Perez.400 10 4 2 5 Torres.000 4 0 0 0.214 14 3 1 2.194 31 6 0 0.235 115 27 3 14.265 162 43 2 12.311 206 64 7 31.293 174 51 9 33.294 17 5 0 2.373 59 22 3 12.262 126 33 4 20.257 101 26 8 19.000 4 0 0 0.282 142 40 8 22.200 480 96 12 50.276 1324 365 28 140.253 2385 603 16 186.258 2576 664 79 273.000 0 0 0 0.284 1947 553 64 257.279 287 80 4 22.244 1544 377 87 243.247 1504 372 63 185.273 1526 416 65 206.259 27 7 0 1 1.000 1 1 0 0.000 9 0 0 0.250 4 1 0 2.400 5 2 0 0.286 7 2 0 0.333 6 2 1 2.200 5 1 1 1.000 3 0 0 0.250 4 1 0 0.500 2 1 0 0.000 1 0 0 0.250 4 1 0 0.500 2 1 0 1.000 1 0 0 0.000 3 0 0 0 1.000 2 2 0 0.000 2 0 0 0 Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
