STEWARDS REPORT Corowa Race Club COROWA RACECOURSE Friday 12 May 2017 Weather: Overcast Track: Good (4) Rail: True STEWARDS: T.J.Davidson (Chairman), J.A.Shultz & D.R.McLean (10u) RACE 1: 3yo Maiden Plate 1000m: All Bets Are Off- Blundered badly on jumping and lost ground. Returned with swelling to the offside eye and was found to be moderately distressed. Trainer Ms E. Maher stated the filly would now be sent for a spell. Arosa- Got its head up while racing keenly in the early stages. Laid inwards over the concluding stages. Indebted- Slow to begin. Crowded shortly after the start. Penny Gambler- Laid inwards in the straight. RACE 2: Maiden Handicap 1200m: Tarot- Raced wide from the 900m. Aganippe- Hung outwards near the 850m. All Shook Up- Slow to begin. Damn Wicked Left- Held up near the 200m and taken outwards to improve. Our Lady Violet- Crowded after the start. Raced very keenly in the early and middle stages and was continually restrained when very awkwardly placed on heels between the 1000m and 500m. Rider Ms C. MacFarlane(a) explained that after receiving minor interference on jumping she pushed her mount forward and the mare then commenced to race very fiercely. She added she had very little control over her mount in the middle stages and was very awkwardly positioned behind runners until straightening. Trainer Mr K. Davison was advised an official warning would be placed on the racing manners of the horse. Tickinover- Checked near the 1100m. At a subsequent inquiry C. Brown pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 1100m he did permit Pink Lotus to shift inwards when insufficiently clear of Aganippe, which was carried in across the running of Tickinover which checked. C. Brown s license to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday 16 May 2017 and to expire on Tuesday 23 May 2017, on which day he may ride.
RACE 3: Class 3 Handicap 1400m: Oh What a Thief- Hampered near the 1250m. Central Pass- Rider Ms A. Bryan(a) stated her mount began fairly but never really travelled throughout the event. She added the filly did not appear comfortable on the shifting track and did not run on in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Coolaminyah Kid- Slow into stride. Crowded after the start. Laid inwards in the straight. Riverset- Bumped with Lord Archibald near the 1250m. Lord Archibald- Bumped outwards near the 1250m and hampered Oh What a Thief. Speedshow- Slow to begin. Buffeted shortly after the start when crowded between Central Pass and Coolaminyah Kid. RACE 4: Maiden Plate 1600m: Another Jay Brown- Checked near the 1500m when crowded between Stat Man which laid out and Graduate which shifted in slightly. Raced keenly in the early stages. Held up near the 50m and was shifted in abruptly to improve resulting in Stat Man having to be eased. Rider L. Grace was reprimanded for careless riding under AR137(a). Graduate-Held up for a run to the inside Potosi passing the 400m and was then taken out abruptly hampering Armour of a Lady. Rider M. Heagney was advised to exercise more care. Heza Jolly Swagman- Hampered and shifted outwards near the 1200m hampering Potosi and carrying that horse wider. Potosi- Hampered and carried wider near the 1200m. Stat Man- Held up in the early part of the straight. Laid out under pressure in the straight. Amour of a Lady- Showed no early pace. Canterbury Walk- Slow to begin. Edge of Manhattan- Slow into stride. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages and was steadied near the 1200m when racing tight to the inside of Hot As a Pistol (B. Clark). B. Clark was advised to exercise more care. RACE 5:Benchmark 55 Handicap 1600m: Rossatin- Bumped on jumping. Willy White Socks- Bumped on jumping. Cross of Gold- Slow to begin. First Rose- Steadied near the 600m when crowded between Sinister Sums and Willy White Socks. Rider M. Travers explained that the instructions were to get back as the mare has a habit of being slow to begin. He added today his mount began very well and he found himself in a
forward position. He added he could not restrain and go back in the field and he was eventually obliged to race wide throughout. His explanations were accepted. Shelbyville- A pre-race veterinary examination, at the request of the rider, found it suitable to race. A post-race veterinary examination found the gelding to be lame in the off fore. Trainer Mr A. Dale advised the horse would now be retired. Notwithstanding this advice Mr Dale was told that should plans change for the gelding a veterinary clearance must be submitted before it would be permitted to race again. Allelu- Eased approaching the winning post when awkwardly placed on the heels of Tudor Rule. Hargy- Raced wide throughout. RACE 6: Benchmark 55 Handicap 1200m: Hangin With Willy- Showed no early pace. Rider B. Murphy explained the gelding is a horse that gets back in its races and today, with a fast early tempo, his mount settled a bit further back than anticipated. He added the horse was back in distance and up in weight but once clear in the straight it had found the line well. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Danejar- Stable representative Mr M. Carroll stated the addition of blinkers was the only explanation he could put forward for todays improved performance. He added the stable had not changed or varied the filly s work leading into the event. His explanations were noted. Mi Cheeki San- Raced wide throughout. Laid inwards in the straight. Midnight Swing- Showed no early pace. RACE 7: Benchmark 65 Handicap 1000m: Not a Hint- Slow to begin. Aussie James- Momentarily steadied near the 300m. Rider M. Heagney stated he was instructed to take up a position just in behind the lead and he added he tried to stay away from the inside section of the track as he felt the surface was slightly inferior. He added after coming to the outside in the straight his mount found the line only fairly and may be better suited when leading. Trainer Ms M. Russell confirmed the instructions but added the horse is better suited when ridden right on the speed. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Billabong Babe- Bumped heavily near the 300m. Laid inwards in the straight. Matilda Bird- Bumped heavily with Billabong Babe near the 300m after being carried outwards by Wednesday Warrior which was hanging out. Voltane- Began awkwardly. Wednesday Warrior- Hung outwards throughout. Rider Ms B. Sweeney(a) stated she had to make some use of the gelding to go forward from a wide barrier and her mount hung out throughout. She added as she became concerned with the geldings action passing the 200m she did not pressure it in the run to the line. A post-race veterinary examination found the
gelding to be lame in the near fore. Trainer Mr P. Sweeney was advised a veterinary clearance must be provided before the horse would be permitted to race again. RACE 8: Class 1 Handicap 1000m: Correct was delayed when the connections of The Big Oh requested to view the stewards patrol films regarding the start afforded the horse. When they were satisfied that no grounds existed for an application to have the horse declared a non-runner, and Stewards were similarly satisfied, correct weight was declared. Nothing But a Saga- Raced tight with Upside Rock and Aunty Porscher near the 600m before shifting out near the 500m and carrying both those horse wider on the track. Rider Ms J. Andreou(a) in the presence of Trainer Mr G. Osborne was reprimanded for careless riding under AR137(a). Made the home turn wide and shifted out under pressure in the straight. Flying Cyril- Steadied near the 600m when crowded to the inside of Magic Draw (S. Miller). S. Miller was reprimanded for careless riding under AR137(a). Laid inwards in the straight. The Big Oh- Slow to begin then took time to muster speed. Rider Ms B. Sweeney(a) stated after being slow to begin and failing to display early speed the horse eventually travelled fairly to the home turn. She added when clear in the straight her mount ran on well and would be suited over a longer distance. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Upside Rock- Raced tight near the 600m. Hampered and carried wider near the 500m. Aunty Porscher- Raced tight near the 600m. Hampered and carried wider near the 500m. Stewards noted the following riders exceeded the permitted strikes whip prior to the 100m under AR137A(5)(a)(ii). Race 2 C. Brown (Pink Lotus) 6 strikes Race 5 B. Loy (Shelbyville) 8 strikes Race 5 Ms C. MacFarlane(a) (Tudor Rule) 7 strikes Bearing in mind the totality of whip use, no action was taken.
