THE FIRST SERVE For just the second time in her 28-plus years as the leader of the Stephen F. Austin volleyball team, head coach Debbie Humphreys leads the Ladyjacks back to her alma mater - Texas Tech - to take part in the Texas Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 9-10 in Lubbock, Texas. Representative from the Summit League, the Big 12 and the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) will oppose the Ladyjacks as they seek to build on a 4-3 record as well as their two-match winning streak that featured four-set triumphs over Kennesaw State and Louisiana-Monroe. The Ladyjacks will open their three-match slate in Lubbock with a 2:00 p.m. encounter with former Southland Conference opponent Oral Roberts (5-2) before playing a 6:00 p.m. nightcap against host Texas Tech (5-2). SFA rounds out its schedule with a 4:00 p.m. showdown against UTRGV on Saturday. Also making the 500+ mile trip from Nacogdoches to Lubbock is longtime SFA volleyball supporter Greg Miller who will provide fans with the play-by-play and analysis of all three of the Ladyjacks matches on SFAVolleyblog.net. SCOUTING ORAL ROBERTS Record vs. Oral Roberts 2-6 In Nacogdoches, Texas 1-1 In Tulsa, Okla. 1-2 At neutral sites 0-3 Humphreys vs. Oral Roberts 2-2 Not since the Golden Eagles and Ladyjacks competed against one another as Southland Conference adversaries in 2013 have the two teams met on the volleyball court and that season the Ladyjacks dropped both regular season matches to ORU by scores of 3-1 and 3-2. Unquestionably, the Golden Eagles are powered predominantly by the play of junior Laura Milos who leads all of NCAA Division I volleyball in three statistical categories: kills per set (6.00), points per set (7.46) and service aces (26) heading into Friday afternoon s tilt. The strong service game of the Croatian has elevated the Golden Eagles to the number-one team in the nation in terms of aces per set (2.74) and the third-ranked team in total service aces (63). Since getting swept in their first two matches of the season against Oklahoma and UMKC, the Golden Eagles have constructed a five-match winning streak and have only fell in two of the 17 sets they have played. In that span, Oral Roberts has felled Southland Conference opposition Incarnate Word (3-0) and Central Arkansas (3-1) and has dropped just one set in the month of September. SCOUTING TEXAS TECH Record vs. Texas Tech 3-11 In Nacogdoches, Texas 1-1 In Lubbock, Texas 0-1 At neutral sites 2-9 Humphreys vs. Texas Tech 3-2 Led by former Texas A&M-Corpus Christi head man Tony Greystone, who is fresh off a 2015 Southland Conference regular season title, 2015 Southland Conference Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance, the Red Raiders have bounced back from an 0-2 start to the season and submitted five straight triumphs heading into their home tournament. Offensively, Lauren Douglass has set the tone for Texas Tech through the early stages of the season. Her 3.35 kills per set as well as her.428 attack percentage are tops among the Texas Tech ranks Only Oklahoma s Micaela Spann owns a better attack percentage (.513) than Douglass in the Big 12. Douglass is no slouch on defense, either, as she is tops on the team and fourth in the Big 12 with 1.23 blocks per set. Four other Red Raiders have been able to put down at least two kills per set including Alyssa Ybanez (2.65), Toni McDougald (2.47), Chandler Atwood (2.29) and Sarah Redding (2.14). Directing the offense for Texas Tech is Marguerite Grubb who has already totaled 276 assists - good for an average of 10.62 per set. SCOUTING UTRGV Record vs. UTRGV 14-0 In Nacogdoches, Texas 8-0 In Brownsville, Texas 1-0 At neutral sites 2-0 Humphreys vs. UTRGV 12-0 The Ladyjacks have never fell to UTGRV - formerly known at UT-Pan American - in the 14 times the teams have crossed paths. That included a 3-2 SFA win in 2012 the last time the two squad did battle in 2012 Against Southland Conference opponents, the Vaqueros have not fared well so far this season. UTRGV has suffered a four-set loss and a five-set loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as well as a five-set setback at the hands of Sam Houston State UTRGV has been leaning primarily on Bojana Mitrovic and Ragni Steen Knudsen to lead the charge on offense. Mitrovic leads the team and sits third in the WAC with 3.41 kills per set and Steen Knudsen isn t far behind, ranking second on the squad and fourth in the league with 3.36 kills per set. Fatoumata Dacosta anchors the back line defense for the Vaqueros with an average of 5.04 digs per set. Her ability to negate kills has helped UTRGV elevate to 13th in the nation with a team digs per set average of 17.89. THE LAST TIME OUT Stephen F. Austin improved to 22-7 all-time in home openers under head coach Debbie Humphreys as the Ladyjacks fought back from a 1-0 deficit to claim a 3-1 triumph over Louisiana-Monroe at Shelton Gym on Tuesday night. After nipping the Warhawks 25-23 in the third set, SFA employed its match-clnching surge from the service line in set four. Trailing 13-11 in the frame, the Ladyjacks closed it out with a 14-2 surge that included three of their team-best nine service aces in 2016. Senior setter Shannon Connell submitted her second-straight double-double by springing for 19 assists and 11 digs. Connell has been responsible for both of the Ladyjacks double-doubles this season and was one of four SFA players to record 11 or more digs in the win. Balance was the word of the night on offense as no SFA player reached double-digits in kills but five submitted six or more terminations to the collective effort. Peyton Redmond and KK Payne tied for team-best honors with nine apiece whlie Justice Walker added eight. Walker also amassed one solo block and four block assists, giving her a team-leading 29 total blocks so far in 2016. THE HITS DON T KEEP ON COMIN One of the areas where the Ladyjacks have excelled in the early portion of the season is in terms of their defense. No Southland Conference team boast a lower opponent hitting percentage than SFA who is holding foes to an attack percentage of just.176 through seven matches. SFA s.176 opponent attack percentage ranks 96th nationally and that may have something to with the fact that the Ladyjacks are scooping up 18.42 digs per set - best average in the 13-team Southland Conference and the eighth-best among all NCAA Division I volleyball teams. Leading the charge in the second row - and in her first season sporting a libero jersey - is junior Lexus Cain. The native of Amarillo, Texas, ranks second among all Southland Conference players with a digs per set average of 5.19 that is also the 24th-highest in the land. Cain reset her career-high in digs by diving for 29 in a four-set loss to Tulsa. Cain has amassed 10 or more digs in each of the Ladyjacks seven matches this season. There are just three Southland Conference teams that possesses a better blocks per set average than the Ladyjacks mark of 2.00. That is also the 140th-best average in the nation. MILESTONE WATCH As the 2016 season progresses, a number of Ladyjacks are poised to arrive at various statistical milestones. Senior middle blockers Justice Walker will arrive at the 1,000-kill plateau by putting down 106 more winners. Should she reach that mark, she would be the first Ladyjack to amass 1,000 kills in a career since Jill Ivy accomplished that feat as a senior in 2014 with an 11-kill outing as part of a 3-0 win over Tennessee State. With another season of strong defensive play in the front row, Walker could also break into SFA s all-time leaderboard in terms of blocks. She needs to add 58 more total blocks to her career total of 333 to enter the top ten all-time in that category. In order to become the seventh Ladyjack to reach at least 2,000 assists in a career, senior setter Shannon Connell needs to rack up 563 more of them in 2016. The product of Fairview, Texas entered the list of SFA s top ten all-time assist getters by totaling 63 in the first three matches of her senior year. Her career total stands at 1,437 - good for 10th place in program history and 59 more helpers will push her into ninth place all-time. The Ladyjacks have amassed more than 70 digs on four occasions and are 3-1 when they do so in 2016. On two occasions SFA has entered double-digit territory in terms of total blocks, including their Tuesday night win over Louisiana-Monroe. In those matches, SFA owns a 2-0 record. SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT Aside from Shannon Connell, the Ladyjacks have two other setters at their disposal in 2016 in sophomore McKenzie Brewer and freshman Ann Hollas. All three have seen time in the SFA lineup this season. Through 12 sets, the 5-11 Hollas has totaled 44 helpers - good for an average of 3.66 per set. Brewer has played in 16 sets through five matches and owns a 3.88 assists per set average. Those three have the Ladyjacks sitting in fourth place in the 13-team Southland Conference with an average of 10.50 assists per set. RED ALERT Through her first seven matches in a Ladyjack uniform, sophomore Peyton Redmond has stepped in and become an integral component to the Ladyjacks offensive and defensive plans. Redmond is just one of a number of players who have the ability to excel in all parts of a rotation, too. The sophomore is a consistent defender, averaging 3.54 digs per set. That average is second on the team only to junior libero Lexus Cain and ranks eighth among all SLC players. SFA is the only team in the Southland Conference who has two players among the top-ten dig producers in the league. Offensively, her kills per set average of 1.81 is the fourth-highest on the team. In 26 sets played, the Liberty Hill, Texas, product has amassed the tenth-most service aces (seven) among all Southland Conference student athletes. She established a new career high with three aces in the Ladyjacks four-set win over Eastern Illinois in the season opener. WALKER/DARON 16 Just over two weeks have elapsed since the Ladyjacks started up their 2016 season and in that time senior middle blocker Justice Walker has already risen near the top of the list in the Southland Conference in terms of front-row defense. A two-time All-Southland Conference First Team selection as well as a 2016 Preseason All-SLC First Team choice, the Fort Worth, Texas, product amassed some 29 total blocks through SFA s first 26 sets played and ranks fourth in the 13-team SLC with a blocks per set average of 1.12. Walker has teamed with freshman middle blocker Danae Daron to become a part of one of the best one-two punches in the Southland Conference. Walker s attack percentage of.305 leads the team and is the fifth-highest in the SLC while Daron is hitting at a.247 clip - the eighth-highest figure among all SLC players. HIT THE BOOKS When she lined up against South Dakota State in the Ladyjacks second match of the season, junior outside hitter Abby McIntyre had no knowledge that she was about to produce one of the most effieicnt outings in the history of the program. The Richmond, Texas, product floored 12 kills on 15 swings without committing an error, translating to an attack percentage of.800. That figure is the sixth-best attack percentage in a single match in program history. McIntyre joins Ashley Bailey (vs. Louisiana 9/20/08), Kristen Clark (vs. Louisiana Tech 10/8/91) and Aubrey Duncan (at Louisiana Tech 10/18/94) as the three other Ladyjacks who have hit.800 in a single match. So far this season, few student-athletes have bettered McIntyre s single-match hitting percentage of.800. It is currently the fourth-best single-match hitting percentage by a player with 15-19 total attacks in NCAA Division I volleyball. Additionally, McIntyre is the only Southland Conference player to own a top-five national performance in a single match in 2016. WALKER S WEEK A byproduct of Justice Walker s front-row defense at the Country Inn & Suites Green Bay Invitational during SFA s season-opening weekend was a Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week selection on August 29. Before her selection as the league s top defender of the week, Walker was the most recent Ladyjack to capture an SLC Player of the Week nod when she laid claim to the league s Offensive Player of the Week honor on November 9, 2015. Walker becomes the first SFA player since MC Bottles on August 29, 2011, to be awarded the first Southland Conference Player of the Week honor of the season. Bottles earned SLC Offensive Player of the Week honors that season. The middle blocker totaled 15 block assists over 10 sets for a blocks per set average of 1.50. Additionally, she added 22 kills over the three matches on the strength of a.333 hitting percentage. Due to her efforts, Walker earned a spot on the Country Inn & Suites Green Bay Invitational All-Tournament Team. THE TEAM TO BEAT In their annual preseason prognostications, the Southland Conference coaches named the Ladyjacks as the team to beat in the 13-team league in 2016. SFA picked up 130 total points and three first-place votes, edging out defending league title holder Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (six first place votes) by three points for the top spot. The coaches also envision a hotly contested race for the SLC crown as the top three spots in the poll were separated by only five points. The Southland Conference SID poll had SFA listed second only to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Again, the top three teams in the SID poll were separated by a slim margin - only four points. MACK ATTACK Joining senior teammate Justice Walker on the list of Preseason All-Southland Conference selections in 2016 is junior Abby McIntyre. One of two juniors among the SFA ranks, McIntyre landed Preseason All-SLC Second Team acclaim after posting 2.33 kills per set during her 2015 sophomore campaign. In addition to possessing the Ladyjacks fourth-highest kills per set average a season ago, McIntyre also added 1.87 digs per set. FOLLOWING THE LEADER Now in her 29th season as the head coach of the Ladyjacks, Debbie Humphreys has established herself as one of the premier NCAA Division I volleyball coaches in the nation. With 620 career wins, Humphreys is one of 20 active NCAA Division I volleyball coaches who have won at least 600 matches. In the Southland Conference coaching circle, her overall winning percentage of.660 is the third-highest in the history of the league. ALL TEXAS, ALL THE TIME For the fourth consecutive season, head coach Debbie Humphreys has assembled a roster comprised of individuals who hail exclusively from the state of Texas. The last non-texan to occupy a spot on the Ladyjacks roster was Sabrina Burns in 2012. The four-year letterwinner called McAlester, Okla., home and wrapped up her days in purple and white with 394 career blocks - the eighth-most all-time in the SFA record books. NEW KIDS IN TOWN Exactly 50-percent of the Ladyjacks 2016 roster is comprised of newcomers. Among those new faces are seven freshmen and one sophomore transfer. Positionally, that group of eight includes four outside hitters (Corin Evans, KK Payne, Peyton Redmond, Xariah Williams), two middle blockers (Danae Daron, Shayla Eagleton), one defensive specialist (Julia Whitehead) and one setter (Ann Hollas). Peyton Redmond played at East Tennessee State during her freshman season and returns to her home state in 2016. Danae Daron s older sister Arielle was also a middle blocker for the Ladyjacks from 2007-11. Another SFA athletics family connection comes from Corin Evans, as her mother was a standout track & field performer for the Ladyjacks in the 1980s. WHAT S NEXT? When their match against UTRGV goes final on Saturday afternoon, the Ladyjacks will return to Nacogdoches where they will stay until the month of October. Stephen F. Austin plays its next seven matches in the confines of Shelton Gym beginning with a Thursday (Sept. 15) Southland Conference skirmish against Incarnate Word. The first of SFA s 16 league matches is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. 4

Austin head volleyball coach and is one of the most successful coaches in the game today. By guiding the Ladyjacks to the 20-win plateau for the 19th time in her tenure as bench boss in 2015, Humphreys upped her career win total to 616 to become one of only 20 active NCAA Division I volleyball coaches who have amassed 600 or more career victories. Currently the 19th-winningest active coach in the nation, Humphreys owns an impressive.660 winning percentage in her 28-year SFA career, including a.741 mark in SLC play. Humphreys led her team to one of the best seasons in program history in 2014 as SFA won its eighth Southland Conference Championship with a perfect 16-0 record. The Ladyjacks rolled through the conference slate with 13 sweeps in 16 matches and posted the first undefeated league mark and first outright SLC title for SFA since 2006. Humphreys squad won 17 straight matches to end the regular season -- the fifth-longest winning streak in the nation over the stretch. The Ladyjacks raked in numerous honors and accolades following the season as five SFA athletes were named to the All-Southland Conference teams, including Paige Holland as the SLC Setter of the Year. For the fifth-time in her decorated career, Humphreys was named the Katrinka Jo Crawford SLC Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the season. She has claimed the league s top coaching honor more than any other active coach. SFA has been exceptional in Southland Conference play in Humphreys tenure. Humphreys led the Ladyjacks to a new Southland Conference record from the 2004-2007 seasons as the Ladyjacks racked up 62 consecutive SLC wins over those four years, eclipsing the old record of 58 that was set by UT-Arlington in the early 1990s. Her Ladyjacks made school history in 2006, posting a 31-4 record that ranks second all-time at SFA behind only the Ladyjacks 32-4 mark in 1994. Incidentally, the `94 campaign marked SFA s first trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Ladyjacks again reached volleyball s big dance in 2006 and did something no other SFA team had ever done -- win a first-round match. The Ladyjacks knocked off Alabama, 3-2, to record the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history, putting an exclamation point on a season for the ages. The 2006 slate included a second straight undefeated SLC run, as the Ladyjacks went 16-0 against league competition on their way to a third straight conference championship. The team surpassed 2005 s 21-match win streak with a 26-match run in 2006, and one year later in 2007 brought home its fourth straight title with a 15-1 record in league play. The Ladyjacks have continued their winning ways once they reach the postseason. SFA has compiled a 27-24 (.530) all-time Southland Conference Tournament record, making 12 appearances in the conference championship match. SFA ranks first in both tournament wins (27) and championship appearances (12) among active league members. Humphreys squads have recorded three 30-win seasons (1994, 1995, 2006), been to the NCAA Tournament four times (1994, 1997, 1999, 2006) and to the NIVC tournament twice (1993, 1995). The Ladyjacks have won eight Southland Conference regular-season and four tournament titles during that same stretch. The SLC has recognized Humphreys for her accomplishments on five separate occasions, naming her the SLC Coach of the Year in 1992, 1994, 2004, 2006 and 2014. Humphreys has produced some of the league s top talent in her 25-plus seasons. During that time she has coached 71 All-Southland Conference selections, six SLC Player of the Year honorees, five SLC Freshman of the Year picks, three Setter of the Year choices and each of the first four SLC Libero of the Year awards that the conference began in 2004. The Ladyjacks are not just recognized for their achievements on the court. The SFA volleyball team has also been recognized nationally for its academic performance, with five players being named to Academic All-America teams, including 2014 selection Paige Holland. The Ladyjacks were also honored with the prestigious AVCA National Team Academic Award for six straight seasons. The AVCA Team Academic Award is an honor given to volleyball programs at the collegiate and high school level that maintain a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average. The 2002 Ladyjack squad was one of only seven to receive the honor in four consecutive seasons. A native of Rochester, Illinois, Humphreys received her bachelor s degree in physical education from Texas Tech in 1986 and her master s degree in exercise physiology in 1988. Humphreys was a three-year letterwinner for the Lady Raider volleyball team, where she earned All-Southwest Conference honors and was named team MVP as a senior. Also a stellar student-athlete, Humphreys was a finalist for academic All-America honors. Humphreys is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, has served a term as the SLC representative on the AVCA Head Coaches Committee and is currently representing the SLC on the AVCA All-Region Awards Committee. At the 1998-99 Ladyjacks Awards Banquet, Humphreys was named to the SFA Hall of Honor for her accomplishments at SFA. Humphreys and her husband, Richard, have two children: Regan and Will. LAUREN LA LANFORD ASSISTANT COACH SIXTH SEASON STEPHEN F. AUSTIN, 08 A former Ladyjack setter from 2003-06, Lauren LA Lanford is set to begin her sixth season as assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin in 2016. Since returning to Nacogdoches, Texas, prior to the start of the 2011 season, Lanford has been an integral component in guiding the Ladyjacks to four-straight above-.500 campaigns, a trio of 20-win seasons as well as a 2014 Southland Conference regular season title. That season, Lanford played a key role in developing 2015 graduate and standout setter Paige Holland into one of the top setters in SFA history in terms of career assists and assists per set. Lanford s assistance in prepping Holland helped the 2014 Ladyjacks to their first Southland Conference championship since 2007, with the squad finishing undefeated at 16-0 in conference play. The Jacks 24 total wins were its most since 2009, and five SFA student-athletes earned All-Southland recognition. Holland, outside hitter Jill Ivy, and middle blockers Jacque Allen and Justice Walker earned first team nods. Following a successful playing career at SFA, Lanford spent time as a student assistant coach in 2007 with SFA and helped lead the Ladyjacks to a share of their fourth-consecutive Southland Conference title and a 27-8 overall record. ADLER AUGUSTIN ASSISTANT COACH SECOND SEASON TEXAS, 07 Adler Augustin enters his second season as an assistant coach for the Stephen F. Austin volleyball team in 2016. Augustin signed on with the Ladyjacks in late July of 2015 and helped lead the team to its 19th season of 20 or more wins. Under the direction of Augustin and the rest of the Ladyjack coaching staff, SFA landed a trio of players - Jacque Allen, OJ Olson and Justice Walker - on various All-Southland Conference teams. Prior to his time in Nacogdoches, Augustin spent five years coaching with Austin Juniors Volleyball Club. The 2015 Austin Junior Volleyball Coach of the Year, Augustin led his under-17 Cedar Park team to a national championship in 2013 and third-place result in 2014. In addition, his teams claimed multiple tournament championships. From 2008-13, Augustin was the head coach of the University of Texas women s volleyball club team; and, the Longhorns finished in the top-three nationally four times under his command, with national championships in 2011-12 and 2012-13. His teams included a pair of national MVPs and eight first team all-tournament players. Augustin also spent time as the head coach of the men s club team at the University of Texas from 2007-09. His 2008-09 team finished fifth in the nation. 9
