2016-17 boston university WOmen s ice hockey After finishing the 2015-16 season third in Hockey East and reaching the conference championship game for the fifth consecutive year, the Boston University women s ice hockey team is looking to begin another streak of NCAA Tournament appearances in 2016-17. Led by 12th-year head coach Brian Durocher, the Terriers welcome back 12 skaters, including their top two scorers from a year ago. New to campus are a talented group of six freshmen, along with junior transfer Nina Rodgers, who attended the University of Minnesota the past two years. This season, seniors Alexis Crossley and Natalie Flynn will be the first set of co-captains to lead the Terriers since the 2012-13 season, when the team reached the national title game. FORWARDS 8 returning, 5 lost, 4 new Upon the graduation of Rebecca Russo, Sarah Lefort, and Kayla Tutino, the Terriers lost three of their top five scorers from a year ago. There is no shortage of talent on this year s squad, however, that will be able to step in to replace them. Spearheading the attack are the team s top two point scorers from 2015-16, juniors Rebecca Leslie and Victoria Bach. As a sophomore, Leslie posted career highs in goals (15), assists (34), and points (49). Her point and assist totals led the team, while her 15 goals placed her in a tie for third. Bach also enjoyed a career year, leading the team in goals (22) and finishing second on the team in assists (26) and points (48). Both were named Hockey East All-Stars and skated for Canada s National Development Team in a three-game series with the United States this past summer. Joining them up front are three seniors - Flynn, Maddie Elia and Samantha Sutherland. Flynn appeared in all but one game as a junior for the Terriers. In June, Elia became the second Terrier drafted in as many years by the Buffalo Beauts of the NWHL. She posted career highs in goals (15) and points (29) in 2015-16. Sutherland appeared in 31 games last season, recording six goals and 11 assists, good for 17 points. Also back up front are sophomores Sammy Davis, Mary Grace Kelley, and Anna Streifel. Davis, a 2016 Hockey East All-Rookie Team selection, had the second highest goal total on the team (17) to go along with nine assists. She received an invite to the USA Hockey Women s National Festival, their U22 development camp, this summer. Kelley appeared in all but one game last year, recording two goals and two assists for four points. Streifel, a redshirt sophomore, appeared in 11 games last year. The Terriers also welcome four newcomers up front, including two transfers who will be eligible to skate right away for the Terriers. Junior Nina Rodgers arrives from the University of Minnesota after winning back-to-back national championships with the Gophers and recording 15 points (9g, 6a) along the way. Graduate student Mary Parker will join the Terriers after playing three full seasons at Harvard. She led the Crimson in scoring (17g, 22a) during the 2014-15 season when Harvard advanced to the NCAA title game and has totaled 91 points (43g, 48a) in 104 career games. Deziray De Sousa and Natasza Tarnowski are the two freshmen forwards on the Terriers. De Sousa was an assistant captain at Phillips Exeter Academy and led the Big Red in scoring with 30 points, while Tarnowski captained the Ottawa Lady Sens and recorded a team high 51 points a year ago. DEFENSEMEN 4 returning, 3 lost, 4 new BU brings back four blue liners from a year ago, including senior captain Alexis Crossley, who led all Terrier defensemen with 20 points last season. Classmate Sarah Steele recorded a careerhigh three goals and eight assists to match her career high of 11 points. Junior Savannah Newton chipped in a career-best six assists last season and earned the team s Most Improved Player Award. The final returner is sophomore Connor Galway, who tallied two assists in 36 games. Four newcomers will join the Terrier blue line. Abby Cook led her Pursuit of Excellence team in points by a defenseman with 14 in 2015-16. Katie Shannahan is a versatile player who can play both forward and defense, and was the assistant captain of her Detroit Little Caesars team as a senior. Alexandra Calderone spent the past two seasons at Dawson College, serving as an alternate captain in 2015-16. She joined Newton, Leslie, and Bach at Hockey Canada s U22 Development Camp this summer. Breanna Scarpaci spent three seasons with Shattuck St. Mary s, winning a U19 USA National Championship in 2016 and a U16 title in 2014. GOALTENDERS 3 returning, 0 lost, 0 new All three goaltenders from the Terriers 2015-16 roster will return this season. Junior Erin O Neil played the majority of the time in 2015-16, starting 28 games. She finished with a 17-8-2 record, posting a 2.91 GAA and a.909 save percentage. The Terriers once again enjoyed a successful campaign under Durocher s guidance during the 2015-16 season. BU advanced to the Hockey East title game for the sixth straight season and won 20 games for the sixth consecutive campaign. Durocher has now led BU to the final weekend of the Hockey East postseason in each of the last nine years and is the only coach in Hockey East history to have won 20 playoff games. The 39-year coaching veteran has been a mainstay behind the BU bench during the program s 12-year history as the program continues to be a perennial national power. Durocher has guided the program since its inception, leading BU to a 231-129-43 overall record in 11 seasons. On May 20, 2013, Durocher signed a contract extension to remain at BU through the 2018-19 season. He was recognized in 2008 with Coach of the Year honors from both Hockey East and the New England Hockey Writers Association after BU reached the Hockey East semifinals in just its third varsity season. Durocher has coached two Patty Kazmaier top-10 finalists, three All-Americans and four Olympic gold medalists, including a pair of two-time Olympic champions, during his 11 seasons as head coach. It was a record-setting year for both Durocher and the Terriers in 2014-15, highlighted by the team s fourth consecutive Hockey East title. BU became the first school to win five league tournaments and just the second program to capture four straight WHEA championships with a 4-1 victory over then-no. 1 Boston College in the title tilt. That victory was the first by a Terrier squad over a top-ranked team. Durocher and the Terriers also reached the 200-win mark with a 5-3 over Connecticut on Jan. 31, 2015. Named the first head coach of BU s varsity team on June 3, 2004, Durocher has guided the Terriers to new milestones each season. The inaugural campaign in 2005-06 set the foundation for the program. A year later, the team reached the Beanpot final and set the high-water mark for wins with 19. Playing a significantly upgraded schedule in 2007-08, BU hosted the Beanpot and returned to its championship game, while making its postseason debut in the Hockey East semifinals. In 2008-09, the Terriers entered the national rankings for the first time and won their first postseason game during the opening round of the Hockey East playoffs. Durocher served on the committee that organized the NCAA Women s Frozen Four, hosted at BU s Agganis Arena, and was selected as a coach for the East team at the NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge that was held in conjunction with the Men s Frozen Four in Washington. In 2009-10, BU captured its first-ever Hockey East title and NCAA tournament berth. After blanking New Hampshire, 4-0, in the Hockey East semifinals, the Terriers edged Connecticut, 2-1, in overtime to claim their first conference crown. BU faced topranked Mercyhurst in the NCAA quarterfinals and lost the hard-fought game, 4-1. With a 17-9-12 record, Durocher led the squad to at least 17 victories for the third time in four campaigns, while the nine losses suffered by the team were the fewest in program history. In 2010-11, the Terriers set a program record for victories (27) and suffered just seven losses all season. BU went 15-3-3 in conference play to capture its first-ever regular season crown. BU hosted Mercyhurst in the NCAA quarterfinals, and the Terriers avenged their loss to Mercyhurst the previous season, advancing to the Frozen Four with a 4-2 win. The Terriers then beat Cornell, 4-1, in the national semifinals to set up a contest with No. 1 Wisconsin for the national title. BU played hard and was within a goal entering the third period, but Wisconsin came away with a 4-1 victory. Despite coming up short in the title game, Durocher s squad enjoyed its most successful season to date. In 2011-12 BU once again reached the 20-win plateau en route to its second Hockey East championship in three seasons and third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. The Terriers hosted the 34th annual Beanpot tournament and advanced to the title game for the second time as a varsity program. After a thrilling doubleovertime win against Providence in the Hockey East title game, BU nearly pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in NCAA tournament history at Cornell. BU erased a 7-4 deficit in the final 10 minutes of the third period to force overtime. It took three overtimes to settle the score, as Cornell edged BU, 8-7, but the Terriers established themselves as one of the premier teams in the country. BU had its best season to date in 2012-13, as the Terriers won a program-record 28 games en route to claiming the Hockey East regular-season title and its second straight Hockey East championship. They made their fourth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and played in the national title game for the second time in three seasons. BU finished the season ranked second in both polls. The 2013-14 campaign was highlighted by the Terriers third straight Hockey East championship and fifth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. BU won 20 games for the fourth season in a row, and established itself as a true dynasty in Hockey East thanks to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over regular-season champion Boston College in the WHEA title game. The Terriers faced No. 1 Minnesota in the NCAA quarterfinals, but were unable to beat the Gophers in a rematch of the 2013 national title game. Prior to his current position, Durocher served as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator of the BU men s ice hockey team from 1996-2004, helping the Terriers to five NCAA tournaments, six Beanpot titles and a Hockey East Tournament Championship. While a student at BU, Durocher was a four-year letterman as a goalie and co-captain of the Terriers 1978 NCAA Division I national championship team. Durocher first served as a full-time assistant on BU men s ice hockey head coach Jack Parker s staff from 1980-85. He began his coaching career immediately after graduation when he was named an assistant coach at American International College in Springfield, Mass. He was there from 1978-80 before returning to BU. In 1985, he left the Terriers to join the staff of the late Terry Slater at Colgate University. In addition to his on-ice responsibilities, he was also the Red Raiders primary recruiter and was responsible for attracting the players who backboned the 1990 team that won the Eastern College Athletic Conference title and advanced to the NCAA title game. In the semifinals of the tournament, Colgate defeated BU, 3-2. In December 1991, after the untimely death of Slater, Durocher was named Colgate s interim head coach, a position he retained through the conclusion of the 1992 season. Later that fall, he was named assistant coach at Brown University, a position he held until he returned to BU in 1996. A native of Longmeadow, Mass., Durocher compiled an impressive 47-13-1 career record minding the goal for the Terriers. His most successful year was his freshman season, during which he compiled a 17-2-1 record with a 3.61 goals-against average and.874 save percentage. He won the Eberly Trophy as the most outstanding goalie in the Beanpot and was an All-East selection. His senior year, as the Terriers finished with a 30-2 record and won the NCAA title, he posted a 14-2-0 record, along with a 3.99 GAA and.871 save percentage. Durocher and his wife, Laura, live in Brookline and have three daughters, Kirsten, Kara and Kelsey.

2016-17 boston university WOmen s ice hockey Katie Lachapelle will enter her ninth season with the Terriers in 2015-16, having helped BU become and remain a perennial national power. In Lachapelle s time with the Terriers, she has helped guide the team to five Hockey East titles and six NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the national title game in 2011 and 2013. She received the 2013 Women s Ice Hockey Assistant Coach Award from the American Hockey Coaches Association. On April 18, 2013, Lachapelle was named an assistant coach of the U.S. Women s National Under-18 Team, a post she has held ever since. Ohio State went 67-65-15 during Lachapelle s tenure in Columbus. Before joining the staff at Ohio State, Lachapelle served as an assistant coach at Niagara for three seasons. The Purple Eagles tallied a 49-49-8 record during her years there and made an appearance in the 2002 NCAA Women s Frozen Four. She was involved in all facets of the Niagara program including recruiting, coordinating team travel, monitoring academics and coaching the forwards. Prior to Niagara, Lachapelle was an assistant coach at Union for two years, where she planned and conducted practices, assisted with recruiting and coached the defense. Lachapelle was a four-year letter winner at Providence from 1995-99. During her playing days with the Friars, Lachapelle was a team captain, an All-ECAC honorable mention and was named to the 1997 ECAC All-Star team. Allison Coomey will enter her ninth season as an assistant coach with the Terriers in 2016-17.
