Roe Park Newsletter A Message from the President James McGuinness President 2016 It gives me great pleasure to write my second note for the Roe Park Newsletter as President of the club. I really enjoyed my first year as President and I attended as many matches involving the teams representing the club, as I could. I am trying to do this again this year although to date, my presence has not brought much luck. I can definitely say that Roe Park should be very proud of the way our teams represent the club, with all matches conducted in a friendly but competitive manner. I take it as a great honour to have been asked to continue in the role of President after such an illustrious list of predecessors. It is nice to see my immediate predecessors still participating in the game at the club. Long may this continue. The AGMs of both branches of the club have taken place and I congratulate both Seamus and Karen on their election to the posts of Captain and Lady Captain respectively. I hope that you both have a great year and if I can assist you in any way please do not hesitate to ask. I would also like to pay tribute to our outgoing Captains Frank and Ann. In keeping with the high standards set by their predecessors, both had great years and did so much good work for the club. The committees of both sections have been elected and again I would like to pledge my support in any way I can. Every member should appreciate the time and effort spent by all members of the respective committees which enables the golf club to function in such an efficient way. Considerable effort continues to be put in to developing our Junior section. I think that everyone agrees that the future success of the club greatly depends on the continued strength of the Junior section. I would like to thank all of the members who give of their spare time to run the Junior section. They all do a great job. After a horrendous spell of weather from November up to the middle of April, the course is now improving every week. It was amazing that despite the weather, we continued to have golf almost every week through the winter. The holes across the road proved particularly useful in enabling us to rest some of the other holes on the main 18-hole course. Ornie and his team deserve particular credit for the course being maintained during such unhelpful weather conditions. I have spoken to many visitors from other clubs and they all marvel at the wonderful setting of the golf course. There are very few locations on the course where we are not provided with wonderful views, and the lay-out of the actual holes is particularly impressive. Having visited many other courses in the country, I can think of no other course which affords as impressive a setting as that of Roe Park. The addition of the new 16th, 17th and 18th holes to the course continues to produce many favourable comments from both members and visitors. However it has to be said that, like many parkland courses, we continue to have problems on all greens with players not repairing pitch marks. I would like to take this opportunity to state that it is every player s responsibility to repair any pitch marks they either cause or see on the greens. By doing this we will continue to have some of the best greens in the country. I have often heard it said that unrepaired pitch marks are caused by visiting societies. I can categorically state that this is not the case. It is our own members who do not repair pitch marks and it is therefore our own members who can remedy this. My first Presidents Day competition and presentation took place in early September. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the whole event. As well as the golf, I particularly enjoyed having my family and friends at the presentation on the Sunday night. It really was an occasion to remember and I am looking forward again to this year s event later on in the year. I would particularly like to thank Kim and George for all their assistance in making this a special event for me and my family, and also Terry, Michael and the team for helping with the organisation of the actual golf competition. Finally I would like to thank all of our members for the support they give to our club. We sometimes do not appreciate what we have in Roe Park and it is only when we visit other clubs that we can really compare the facilities we have to that of those other clubs. Michael does a great job in running the Pro- Shop, ably assisted by all of his staff, and, although I have seldom availed of their coaching services, I know that both Michael and Sean assist many members in order to improve their games and provide solutions to their problems. Again I would encourage all members to support Michael, Sean and all of the staff. The Coach House is excellent for enjoying an après golf drink or some food and we all should appreciate the attention and service provided by Stephanie and her staff. I look forward to continue working with the Directors, General Manager George Graham, Golf Manager Terry Kelly and all the staff in the Coach House and Hotel. To all members of both branches of the club, I hope that you enjoy your golf and generally being among friends, and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible throughout the year. Hopefully the weather will improve and provide us with long spells where we can all enjoy the considerable attractions of the entire Roe Park Resort complex.
