March 2019 Presidents Message February was a fun month even though it was short. It seemed even shorter for Lori and I because we spent a good portion of the month in Costa Rica. We attended a triathlon camp hosted by Race Quest Travel. Of course, Lori was able to get the company to sponsor Zoomers, so check out their website @ https://race-quest.com/, for training and racing vacations. February was also another great month for 5k s and Ultras. I hope all of you will be able to attend the Multi Sport Clinic on March 9 th at Englewood Beach. The cost is $5.00 and everyone gets a new Zoomers swim cap. For more information please see the event on the Zoomers Facebook page under events or email zoomersmembership@gmail.com. Many of us are looking forward to Daylight savings time on March 10th. Please be sure to move your clocks ahead 1 hour. With the longer and warmer days ahead remember to stay hydrated and use sun screen! Also remember that we are still in season so be careful out there, the traffic is crazy. Reminder High School Senior athletes and parents - don t forget to apply for the 2019 Zoomers scholarship. Due to the huge success of last years Trick or Trot we are able to give two Scholarships this year! Check out this link for more information https://zoomersrun.com/wp-content/ uploads/2019-zoomers-scholarship-requirements-and-application.pdf. Mark your calendars for the Zoomers 23 rd Anniversary celebration on May 5, 2019. Details are forthcoming. Happy Racing, Pat Vasquez, President. 3 Zoomersrun.com

ZOOMERS MARCH SPOTLIGHT: DUSTIN HAWKINS By: Denise Costa Dustin Hawkins is married to another runner, Jodie Hawkins, and they have three sons who you may see pounding the pavement with their parents, Ryan (9), Jensen (6), and Ian (4). Dustin is a Sales Account Manager for KraftMaid Cabinetry. He and his family have been Zoomers members since 2016. His current role in Zoomers is to assist with obtaining race discounts for Zoomers members. (Thank-you Dustin $). Dustin started running six weeks before his first 5k, the 2016 Trick or Trot, at which point he swore off ever running further than 3 miles. (That is funny!) His favorite race is the Run 941 races in the woods. Dustin said there are always a variety of distances to choose from depending on your mood and training needs, plus great shirts and unique finisher's medals and awards. Dustin s longest run is 112 miles at Save the Daylight in 2018, but he also ran over 50 miles twice. His most recent PR was logging 60ish miles in the SCT Dawn to Dusk 12 Hour ultra on February 16th and he hit the 50-mile mark in just under 9 hours. That is an incredible feat on your feet Dustin! When asked what he enjoys most about running? He stated it is the one time during the day he is just relaxed, and his phone is locked away in his car for a while. Also, running with his wife and kids when possible is great (most of the 5ks he runs are with one of his sons), plus all the friends and encouraging training partners he has met along the way. His next goal race is in Savannah, Georgia for a 24-Hour Ultra at the end of April, aiming for approximately 100 miles. It will be in the woods and it will be hot, so he will see how he survives. Dustin and Jodie are the AWANAs Game Leaders for Colonial Baptist Church in Venice. He reports most of the games they create involve running! 9 Zoomersrun.com

By: Melinda Hoooper Dawn Till Dusk 12 hour at Stone Island Estates in Deltona, Florida was a little ultra with a lot to love. The journey started off Friday night with a road trip with 3 of my favorite runners. A few hours, some Fresh Kitchen, and lots of laughs later we were settled in for the night and ready for an early morning start. The race started at 6:30 am, dawn of the Dusk Till Dawn, and off we ran in the chill morning air. The course was absolutely lovely. What appeared to be a wide walking path in the event photos was actually a narrow neighborhood road that was shared by runners and some local traffic (some of it race related). Beautiful trees covered a large amount of the 1.11 mile loop, providing scenery and keeping things shaded for much of the day. The race start/finish had a view of Lake Monroe and a section of the course wound along the waterfront. Temps were cool at the start but began to climb as the sun rose. The tree canopy provided some shade and there was a glorious cool breeze coming off of the lake that helped to keep conditions tolerable. For a primarily local event D2D had a pretty substantial turnout. According to runsignup 102 participants completed in the 12 hour individual ultra, ranging in age from 3 to 78, and another 9 teams ran the relay event. There were a number of spectators in attendance and their cheers and cowbells were a great pick-me-up at the start/finish of each loop. As with most small loop races it was also fun to exchange greetings and chat with the other races as we ticked off our laps. As the sun began to set and the clock counted down the final minutes, I made some last minute calculations. With a little luck and some hustle I figured could just squeeze in a last 3 laps before 6:30 pm. so I dug deep and picked up my pace and went for it. My legs were not a fan of running a fast 5k at the end of a 12 hour but it was worth it. I crossed the finish with a smile knowing I d pushed to the end. At the end of the day I completed 50 loops for a total of 55.5 race miles (56.4 miles on my Garmin). Thanks to my last minute hustle I was 4th female/ 7th overall... not a bad day! Definitely a fun race and a great trip with wonderful people. 13 Zoomersrun.com
