The Farr 25 is a new sportboat with excellent performance yet be easy to handle and operate. FYD developed its beautifully shaped hull alongside Volvo 70s with an exceptional ballast ratio of 50%, a light displacement of only 930kg (2050lbs) and a displacement to length ratio of 77. These parameters with 37m2 (400ft2) of upwind sail area make Farr 25 to have smoothhandling upwind performance while the 64m 2 (690ft 2 ) well proportioned spinnaker providing plenty of downwind horsepower. Farr 25 is also optimized for IRC handicap rule. The hull and deck shell are sandwich composite structure with e-glass skins in an epoxy resin employing variable core thickness. The laminate is consolidated with a three hit process both skins and core vacuum bagged separately to achieve repeatable, high quality and light laminates. Hull and deck are supported with various structural elements, higher density foam and additional reinforcements giving required stiffness without excessive weight. The shell is coated with a polyurethane paint system for a superior coating in minimal weight. The keel is a fixed, a maintenance free T configuration with a lead bulb as in most high tech racing yachts. The keel is assembled with a single bolt making keel assembly and disassembly extremely easy. The bulb shape takes advantage of the recent CFD research FYD has conducted, optimized for performance in round the buoys racing and delivers improved lift efficiency upwind and tight reaching. The keel fin is all carbon fiber, fin spar constructed in pre-preg carbon over a foam mandrel, giving incredible stiffness and strength in a very lightweight package. The complete keel fin assembly weighs a mere 18 kg s allowing more weight to be packed into the bulb for a lower VCG providing exceptional performance. Keel fin also incorporates a kelp cutter installation.
The Farr 25 features a carbon rudder stock in a female molded carbon/foam blade. The blade shape is of a high aspect ratio for maximum lift efficiency and minimum drag. The foil section is one of FYD s proprietary custom shapes, with excellent stall characteristics for maximum control in power reaching conditions. The single spreader rig and box boom from Southern Spars are all carbon. The bowsprit is also carbon fiber. The large, comfortable cockpit has all the sail controls within easy reach of the crew. The deck is kept clear from lines and hardware is recessed where possible to minimize nuisance. Deck hardware is supplied by Harken. A relatively high freeboard and simplified internal structure provides for a spacious, open interior with sitting headroom on berths port and starboard of the companionway. A low aspect keel trunk allows for easy movement throughout the cabin. Propulsion is provided by a 6hp outboard, which is conveniently stowed in and deployed through a well in a locker in the cockpit sole. The maximum draft is 1.8m, which does allow the boat to be trailered on its keel throughout Europe and the US. The 930 kg Farr 25 is easily launched and lifted via a club crane with the installed single point lifting arrangement.
