Camino De Santiago Coastal Camino challenge 14 th -21 st September 2019 A wonderful experience packed with walking and hiking trails awaits you

Coastal Camino Challenge Walking sections from Baiona to Compostela If walking is your thing then the Camino is a must! Journey with us as we follow in the footsteps of many pilgrims throughout the ages. Enjoy the rustic landscape as we trek through sleepy villages, alongside streams and blossoming trails while soaking up the culture of this unique and historic part of the world. Our participants are men and women of all ages! Their reasons for taking part come in all shapes and sizes, but the one thing everyone has in common is the desire to help families in Ireland living with dementia, whilst taking part in a unique experience.

TRIP ITINERARY Walking sections from Baiona to Compostela Day 1 - Check-in at Dublin airport for your direct Ryanair flight to Porto. On arrival, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel in Vigo where you will stay in the 4 star Hotel Sercotel Bahia de Vigo for 4 nights with breakfast and dinner. Day 2 - Baiona to Vigo Walk 23 km. After breakfast, depart your hotel for your coach transfer to Baiona, where you will begin your first walk. Follow the coast from Baiona to Nigran and onwards to the city of Vigo. Enjoy fantastic views of the Bay of Vigo with the magnificent Illas Cies and its natural park on the horizon. Day 3 - Vigo to Redondela Walk 14 km. After breakfast, you will continue your walk on the coastal Camino, starting in the city of Vigo, with the Bay of Vigo to your left. This bay area was one of the settings for Jules Verne s Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea. Enjoy today at a relaxed pace before reaching Redondela, known as the Village of the Viaducts due to the two 19 TH Century railroad viaducts in the town. Day 4 Redondela to Pontevedra Walk 16 km. Today is your final day along the coast so make the most of the seaside! Transfer from Vigo by coach to Redondela. From here, walk through the village of Arcade and cross the Romanesque bridge where Napoleon was defeated in the War of Independence, before arriving to Pontevedra. Pontevedra is a city with a long maritime tradition and boasts one of the largest and most elegant historic quarters in the whole of Galicia. Day 5 - Pontevedra to Caldas de Reis Walk 24 km. After breakfast, transfer by coach to Pontevedra, where you will begin your walk to Caldas de Reis. This part of the Camino will take you through chestnut groves, pine and eucalyptus woods. In the village of Ponte Cabras you will see the rectory of Santa Maria de Alba nestled among the trees. At Lombo da Maceira a statue of Saint James with his walking stick will show you the way ahead. Before reaching Caldas de Reis you will pass the scenic village of Tivo, famous for its pilgrim s fountain and public washing bath. Here you will be met by your coach and transferred to the 4 Hotel Hesperia Peregrino in Santiago de Compostela where you will be reunited with your bags and checked in for 3 nights. Day 6 - Caldas de Reis to Padron Walk 18 km. Leaving Caldas de Reis behind you cross the bridge over the river Umia to hot spring fountains which have given the town its name since Roman times. This part of the Camino once again takes you to a forest gradually climbing to the village of Santa Marina where you will continue through pine forests to the town of Padron. When the body of Saint James was being brought to Compostela by boat, Padron was said to be the first land it reached.

Day 7 - Padron to Santiago de Compostela Walk 25 km. Today is your final day walking and the route will take you through a number of small villages on your way to the historical Sanctuary of Esclavitude. You will walk by the ruins of Castro Lupairio, home to Queen Lupa who is said to have provided the oxen to pull the cart carrying the remains of Saint James to Santiago, before viewing the oldest wayside crosses in Galicia. As you make your way towards Agro dos Monteiros you will be able to see the spires of the cathedral in Compostela. You will pass the ruins of a castle known as A Rocha Vella before arriving into Santiago de Compostela. Day 8 Return home today - you have some free time to enjoy before your 2pm transfer to the airport for your flight home. Take the time for one last venture into the Cathedral s Square to enjoy Mass or simply take the morning to relax.

About The Alzheimer Society of Ireland Dementia presents one of the greatest population health challenges both here in Ireland and globally. It affects almost 55,000 people and touches the lives of 50,000 carers and hundreds of thousands of family members. The Alzheimer Society of Ireland works across the country in the heart of local communities providing dementia specific services and supports and advocating for the rights and needs of all people living with dementia and their carers. Our vision is an Ireland where no one goes through dementia alone and where policies and services respond appropriately to the person with dementia and their carers, at the times they need support. Each year, The Alzheimer Society of Ireland provides over 1 million hours of community-based, dementiaspecific, care throughout Ireland. We offer a range of services such as day care, respite, social clubs, dementia advisors and a national helpline. Our Day Care Centres provide dementia specific, person centred care to meet the needs of the person with dementia in a warm, welcoming and safe environment while providing support and stimulation. Our Home Care service assigns a trained dementia care worker to client s home for a certain number of hours per week. We provide support, activities and practical information to the person with dementia as well as respite from caring for the caregiver. Our Dementia Advisors work with people with dementia and their families and carers to provide a highly responsive and individualised information and signposting service. Our Alzheimer Cafes and Social Clubs are for people with dementia, their friends, families or carers. We need to raise 3.3 million annually to maintain current services and fund new initiatives. To do this, we rely totally on the generosity of our donors and supporters to help us continue providing the services that we do. We hope you will be part of this Camino to help support our work and make a real difference to those living with Dementia and their families.
