Myrtle Beach Pelicans (44-29, 1-2) vs. Potomac Nationals (34-40, 1-3) Monday, June 26, 2017-7:05 p.m. Game No. 74 Second Half Game No. 4 Home Game No. 39 TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark Myrtle Beach, S.C. MiLB.tv MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn LHP Justin Steele (5-3, 2.32 ERA) vs. RHP Nolan Sanburn (2-1, 3.81 ERA) WOOD DUCKS NIP PELICANS 2-1 Despite five shutout innings from Mike Rucker, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans offense struggled Saturday in a 2-1 loss to Down East. Rucker dueled with Wood Ducks starter Richelson Pena, with each right-hander firing five shutout frames before a one hour and 18-minute rain delay knocked both of them from the game. Down East finally scored the first run of the game on a Josh Altmann RBI double in the seventh. Trent Giambrone bashed his fourth home run in nine games with a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh to knot the score at one. However, in the eighth, Yanio Perez lined a two-out double to right to push the Wood Ducks to a 2-1 advantage. NO ORDINARY MUGGLES In a 13-game stretch from April 30 through May 11, Pelicans starters struggled significantly, tossing a full five innings just three times. During that span, Myrtle Beach s rotation gave up a combined 52 runs, 40 earned, on 71 hits in 53.0 innings (6.79 ERA, 12.1 H/9), lasting roughly 4.0 frames per outing. However, since that point, the Birds starters are turning the corner. Pelicans hurlers have tossed at least five innings in 32 of their past 39 games, with five of those seven exceptions coming in spot starts from the bullpen. Over that time frame, the club s starters have allowed just 72 runs, 61 earned, on 170 hits in 215.0 innings (2.55 ERA, 7.1 H/9) during this time frame, lasting 5.2 frames per outing. Thanks to this run of success, Myrtle Beach s starting pitching has won 12 of their last 16 decisions, padding their record from 10-16 on May 24 to 22-20 today. PRISONERS OF AZKABAN The Pelicans offense has really struggled this season, ranking at or near the bottom of the league in average, OBP, SLG and OPS. The Birds also rank no better than sixth in any other offensive category besides home runs (second). However, Myrtle Beach places fifth in runs scored, which means the Birds are certainly outperforming their underlying numbers. Perhaps the biggest reason for the Pelicans ability to cash in more runs than expected with their offensive statistics is hitting with runners in scoring position. The Birds are batting just.243/.306/.371 (.676 OPS) overall. Yet, with runners in scoring position, that line magically rises to.258/.319/.382 (.701 OPS). SERIES-US BLACK With a 2-1 loss to the Wood Ducks on Saturday and Sunday s postponement, the Pelicans lost their first series since dropping three of four in Salem from May 19-22. After that set loss to the Red Sox, Myrtle Beach had taken six consecutive series. The 2008 Birds are the last team in club in team history to conquer seven straight series in a row, doing so from July 17 through August 9 of that season. A TRIP DOWN DIAGON ALLEY Myrtle Beach s 16-4 start to the month of June is the best record in the month of any team in Minor League Baseball. It has also matched the club s best start to any month in recorded Pelicans history (through the 2005 season), equaling last season s 16-4 start to the month of August. During this year s June, the Birds have surrendered just 50 runs, tied for the second-lowest of any full-season club in the minor leagues. Myrtle Beach s 2.18 June ERA is the fourth-best of any full-season MiLB team. THE GOBLET OF FIRE On May 24, the Pelicans were just 23-22, sitting in third place in the Southern Division, 4.0 games behind Buies Creek. Since then, the Birds have rattled off 21 wins in 28 games, including 16 of the past 20. From May 24 on, Myrtle Beach has ceded just 77 runs (2.8 per game), surrendering more than four in a game just four times out of 28 contests. During that span, the club s 2.37 ERA is the third-best in full-season Minor League Baseball. The Pelicans 77 runs surrendered are also the fourth-fewest among full-season squads. PELICAN POINTS Myrtle Beach starter Justin Steele enters Monday ranked third in the Carolina League in ERA at 2.32. That is the best mark of any active pitcher in the league... Feeling strong of late, Bryant Flete has surged into the top 10 in the circuit in batting average at.296... P.J. Higgins is fourth in TPA/SO (8.78)... The Pelicans welcome in the Potomac Nationals for a four-game set beginning on Monday. It will be the clubs first meeting of 2017. The Nationals have the league s fourth-worst overall record (34-40), but own the circuit s third-best run differential at +37. Steele was the second player from George County to sign with Southern Miss, following in the footsteps of Mason Robbins, who played for the Winston- Salem Dash in 2016. -The number 21 is special to Steele. His father, Ben, wore it as a wide receiver in the mid- 1980s at the University of Alabama before a back injury ended his career. Justin s older brother, Jordan, used it while pitching at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, his grandfather wore the number playing college basketball at Southern Mississippi and his great-grandfather wore the number playing professional baseball in Japan. Justin s father, Ben Steele was recruited to Alabama by Paul Bear Bryant, but ended up playing for Ray Perkins after Bryant retired. -Justin uses a very strict routine on the day of his start. He enjoys a veggie stir-fry omelet, iced coffee and water for breakfast before returning to meditate at his apartment. Once he arrives at the ballpark, he makes sure to throw his first warm-up pitch at exactly 6:32 p.m. for a 7:05 p.m. game. -Steele has credited his routine, and the meditation for his success in 2017: The biggest difference this year is that I have a pretty set-in-stone routine. I ve had it the whole entire year and I make sure that, the day of my start, I go by it religiously. In the meditations, it gives you about three minutes to let your mind wander and let your brain think about what it s going to think about. I always picture myself on the mound dominating. And once I get out in the game, it s like I ve already done this. 2017 SEASON -Steele has allowed no more than two earned runs in eight consecutive starts. Over that span, the lefty has ceded 13 runs, eight earned, on 39 hits in 44.1 innings for a 1.62 ERA. He has struck out 39 against 15 walks. -The left-hander has the seventh-highest ground ball rate in the Carolina League (51.0%), which has helped him to the sixth-lowest line drive rate (18.0%) and 13th-lowest fly ball rate (30.9%). -Steele has shown a bit of a platoon split so far, with lefties just 15-for-73 (.566 OPS) against him, compared to an.734 OPS that right-handed batters have put together in 181 at-bats. 2016 SEASON -Steele had two starts in which he gave up eight runs. The southpaw did not allow more than three earned runs in any of his other 17 outings. In those 17 starts, he was 5-5 with a 3.27 ERA (27 ER in 74.2 IP, 78 H, 36 BB, 72 K). -Steele dealt with a bad platoon issue last season. He held lefties to a.215 average and.619 OPS in 93 at-bats. However, righties batted.344 with a.903 OPS in 212 at-bats. 2015 SEASON -Steele allowed more than two earned runs in just one of his 10 starts. -Righties hit.220 with a.587 OPS against him, but lefties were 12-for-37 (.324) with a.780 OPS against him. ADDITIONAL CAREER NOTES -Steele was named the 5A Player of the Year in Mississippi by state coaches in 2014. He won the 2014 Mississipii Hall of Fame Award for High School Baseball. VS.
