WILD ONE AT WRIGLEY: The Chicago Cubs today play the second of three games against the Pittsburgh Pirates after yesterday winning the series opener, 11-10 in 12 innings after relinquishing leads of 7-1 through five innings and 10-5 through seven frames, Chicago won in walk-off fashion thanks to a Matt Szczur gamewinning single to right field in which Gregory Polanco lost his footing. Yesterday s win was Chicago s first in which the team allowed multiple four-run innings at home since May 8, 2000 vs. Milwaukee, a 12-11 victory. Kris Bryant (4 RBI) and Matt Szczur (3 RBI) became the first Cubs rookie duo with at least three RBI each in the same game since Bobby Hill and Mike Mahoney drove in three apiece, September 12, 2002 at Cincinnati. James Russell spun 2.0 scoreless innings in his 323rd career appearance with the Cubs, tying him with Willie Hernandez for the most by a lefty in franchise history. FIVE ALIVE!: The Cubs have won five-straight games for the first time since June 3-7 of last season vs. the Mets (3-0) and Marlins (2-0) the team aims for its first sixgame winning streak since seven-straight victories, July 31-August 6, 2011, at St. Louis (1-0), at Pittsburgh (4-0) and vs. Cincinnati (2-0). This five-game streak has come exclusively at home, and it marks the team s longest winning streak at Wrigley since taking six-straight, August 22-September 3 of last season vs. Baltimore (3-0) and Milwaukee (3-0). Anthony has reached base safely 74 times this season, tied with Bryce Harper for the most in the majors Rizzo ranks fourth in the N.L. with a 1.079 OPS Thursday, he was hit by pitches twice and now by far leads the majors as he s been hit by pitches 11 times St. Louis Jon Jay is second, having been hit by six pitches. IT S JOB ONE: The Cubs are 15-2 in 17 games when their starting pitchers record a quality start this season and are 5-13 in 18 games when their starters do not record a quality effort Cubs starters are 12-1 with a 2.10 ERA (27 ER/115.2 IP) in those 17 quality efforts. BRYANT AT THE DISH: Kris Bryant is hitting.289 (13-for-45) with a double, a triple, four homers, 14 RBI and 10 walks in his last 12 games dating to May 4 he s posted a 1.033 OPS in that stretch, including a.411 OBP and a.622 slugging mark this 12-game stretch follows a four-contest stretch in which he endured an 0-for-13 slide. Bryant has already accepted 22 walks in 27 games this season, tied for sixth-most in the National League all five players ahead of Bryant have played in at least 33 games this season. Bryant has homered in four of his last seven contests he s gone deep in four of his last 26 at-bats after starting his big league career without a long ball in his first 73 at-bats. PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE: Chicago s batters are averaging 3.99 pitches per plate appearance thus far, the best mark in the N.L. and the second-best mark in all of baseball: Boston leads the majors by averaging 4.00 pitches per plate appearance. Kris Bryant is second in the majors, averaging 4.41 pitches per plate appearance the Mets Curtis Granderson leads with 4.43 pitches per plate appearance. YOUNG GUNS: The Cubs on April 21 selected the contract of infielder Addison Russell, who is 21 years and 113 days old today he is currently the second-youngest player in the National League and third-youngest in the majors: Toronto s Roberto Osuna is 20 years, 98 days old, followed by the Mets Dilson Herrera (21 years, 74 days).
