This is the fifth of a six-game, seven-day homestand against Pittsburgh (2-1) and Milwaukee (1-0) following this series, the Cubs hit the road for a seven-game trip at St. Louis (4 games starting Monday) and Milwaukee (3 games starting Friday). At 13-8, the Cubs own the fourth-best winning percentage in the National League (.619), trailing only the St. Louis Cardinals (16-6), New York Mets (16-8) and Los Angeles Dodgers (14-8). The Cubs have won 12 of their last 18 games and are 13-8 overall, the club s best start through 21 games in seven years since going 15-6 in 2008. Today is the second of 17-straight game days for the Cubs before their next respite on May 18 Chicago had four off days and two postponed dates since beginning the season on April 5 through Thursday. COMFORTS OF HOME: Today s starter, Jake Arrieta, is 8-2 and has a 1.54 ERA (17 ER/99.2 IP) in his last 15 Wrigley Field starts dating to September 25, 2013 that s the lowest home ERA for a starting pitcher in that stretch (min. 15 GS), as Cincinnati s Johnny Cueto is second with a 1.64 home ERA. Arrieta has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last 15 starts at Wrigley Field that s the longest stretch for a Cubs starter at home since Travis Wood went 19-straight home outings having allowed three or fewer earned runs spanning the 2012-13 campaigns. SERIES STUFF: Chicago is 2-0-1 in its last three series and went 4-1-2 in series play in the season s first month the team did not record their fourth series win last season until June 7. A series victory this weekend would make the Cubs unbeaten in four-straight series (of two or more games) for the first time since a six series run, June 25- July 19, 2012, in which the club was 5-0-1 vs. the Mets (2-1), vs. Houston (3-0), at Atlanta (2-2), at the Mets (2-1), vs. Arizona (3-0) and vs. Miami (2-1). AGE IS JUST A NUMBER: Addison Russell s first career homer yesterday accounted for the game s lone run Elias Sports Bureau points out that at 21 years, 98 days old, Russell is the youngest player to homer in a 1-0 game since Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews did so with the Boston Braves, September 14, 1952 vs. the Cubs, at 20 years, 337 days old.
