48 H udson Commodore Labor of Love 46 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com Photog: Marcus Potter Story: Marcus Potter 47

Labor of Love This car build ( Labor of Love ) started June 16th 1939, for that was the day that Bill Wimpy was born. Bill is an avid car enthusiast, good father and an all-around great man. Bill raised two daughters, Staci and Traci, as well as a host of nice cars through the years. About 5 years ago, I entered the mix by marrying Traci. Also being a car guy, I didn t want some wild bachelor party. Instead Bill and I went to the NSRA South car show in Knoxville the day before our wedding, and began the tradition. Through the trials of life, it had been several years since Bill had a custom car to call his own, but the passion was still very much alive. I learn from him every year while we walk and talk our way through the car show. Bill is a walking encyclopedia of rare car knowledge. He is a great fan of the late 40 s and early 50 s cars. The cars back then had class and style, today they all just look like jelly beans, is a common statement that he makes when talking about cars. After last year s annual trip to the NSRA south car show, my wife Traci hatched a wonderful plan to put their dad back into a classic ride. He raised us, we owe him a car. Staci was especially hard to raise, said Traci with a smirk. You see the 2014 car show would not just be our 5 year wedding anniversary, it would also mark Bill s 75th birthday. The search for the right late 40 s early 50 s car began. The search was tough due to our limited budget. It quickly became clear that there would be no 2 door 49 Mercs, or 54 Belair Convertibles in our price range. Then it happened. A Craig s list ad for a 1948 Hudson Commodore barn find. The ad stated that it started and ran around 15 years ago and had been sitting for over 20 years in a concrete floor garage. It was complete but rough, with some extra pieces. We knew that we were in for an 11 month mad weekend thrash if we were to get it built in time for the annual car show. A deal was struck and the car came home. It fought us from the start. The brakes and the clutch were locked up, so just loading it onto a trailer was a story its self. We made it home and surveyed the extra pieces and parts to learn that we had nearly everything we needed to make his dream come true. A fine example of the big car, chrome and luxury era. This was very fortunate because we soon learned that 90% of the Hudson was proprietary parts, and you can t just go get a new piece like a Chevy or Ford. The reality of our deadline became clear to my wife on the very first weekend. It was raining hard when she asked me what I wanted to do, the answer was, We are going to get the Hudson running. I explained that we just didn t have time to cherry pick our weekends. To this she answered, OK let s get moving, and headed out to set up patio umbrellas around the 48. So began the build. The engine had been replaced from the original straight 8 to a much larger and powerful 1953 Hornet 308 cubic inch straight 6. The engine was not locked up so reviving it was simple, with the exception of finding the right parts. All flat glass was replaced and the vent wings were repaired with relative ease. The replacement of the original cork clutch was another story. These transmissions come out through the interior, so what was left of the interior had to be removed. The clutch and related pieces challenged our intellect and our patience, and created of some new curse words. Compared to eating an elephant, the car was taken down and refurbished bite by bite and piece by piece. 48 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com 49

The body was surprisingly solid and straight. I was honored that the team elected me as the Paint Guy, except for the fact that I had not painted a car in over 20 years. I personally believe that everyone should paint a car once in their life to understand the amount of work and precision needed to make one look decent. We sanded it down to metal and turned our carport into a paint booth. Epoxy primer would ensure that if when done it wasn t right, at least there would be a good base for the next person. Filling, wet sanding and buffing became our every weekend. When the car was ready to paint, Traci insisted on Alien Green on top and Wimbledon White on the bottom. We trusted her, though not completely sure about her choice. When it sat in the sun for the first time, Staci and I agreed that she had nailed it. The girls were there every step of the way with a positive attitude and zero complaining. Hard working is a common phrase used when speaking of this family s name. There were other trying pieces of the car that challenged us over the 11 month period, but none could rival the clutch job, except maybe the steering wheel. The steering wheel had a wrap on it and crunched when you touched it. This was not a good sign. With it being a one year steering wheel, replacement was not a cost effective option. It became my morning, lunch and evening project for several months in order to make a new steering wheel on the old metal support. A tedious task, but it would be the main thing Bill would see every time he drove the car. It had to be perfect, or not at all. When it was all said and done, the girls and I were able to do everything but re-chroming the bumpers and recreating the interior. The project brought us all closer and we now jokingly call ourselves Two Chicks and a Dude Customs. We were able to hide this project without a peep for eleven months. By the grace of God we pulled it off with one weekend to spare. This allowed us to clean our 65 Mustang fastback which was a large part of the excuse to go to the show. We surprised Bill and his wife Doris with their new Hudson on Saturday at the car show. The look on his face and his continuing smile made it all worthwhile. This was our labor of love. A gift from the hearts of his family, backed by hard work and determination. It is our belief that things come and go, so we should all invest in memories, for they will last a lifetime. This Commodore will be a gift a keeps on giving. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to look at the car and talk about the car with Bill. It added so much to his experience and his gift. Story by: Marcus Potter 50 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com 51

(Top Left & right) Here is the new ride being given its first bath in what was probably a long time. (bottom center) Here is the Hudson setting on the driveway waiting on its restoration. This is a solid example for Marcus, his wife and sister in-law to start with. The chrome and trim seems to be there and will be perfect when all is said and done. I saw photos of the car being loaded up onto the trailer for its trip back to the home of Marcus and his wife to begin the transformation. Good Luck!!! Follow along as the transformation begins! 52 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com 53

(top) Here is an upclose shot of the steering wheel and dash at the beginning of the project. (bottom) Here is a side shot of the interior! (top) Here we see the doors. The wood and window cranks look in pretty good shape. (bottom) Back seat and headliner are in tact. 54 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com 55

The steering wheel was in pieces once the steering wheel cover was removed. As you can see by the photos, it is gradually being restored. When speaking with Marcus over the phone, I asked him how many hours he had in the restoration of the steering wheel. The answer was many! Wait until you see the final result. This just goes to show you that hard work, patience and dedication are required when restoring antique automobiles. 56 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com 57

(top left) Here we see how the car looks with the previous color sanded off. If you look closely at the photos you can see the change in seasons. All trim has been removed and is being prepared to be introduced to the paint booth. 58 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com (top right) Marcus painted the car himself. The first paint job that was applied in 20 years. He converted his carport into a paint booth. It certainly has served its purpose well. Amazing!!! (bottom center) Here we have Staci and Traci working on the doors of the Hudson. You can certainly tell by the smiles on their faces that they are loving every minute of this project. A lot of hard work, but you can see the ladies are up to it! 59

When I saw this car in person in Knoxville, TN I was impressed by the quality of the interior. Then was blown away when I saw it in the beginning! Marcus, Staci and Traci left no details un-turned in the interior. The hand rails on the back of the front seat are immaculate and retains the high level of detail that the factory offered in 48! 60 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com 61

(top) While the trim was in good shape in the beginning, you can certainly tell the difference. (bottom) Here is the finished product! Yes folks there is multiple articles of proof that Marcus, Staci and Traci did the work themselves! Amazing work guys!!! AWESOME! 62 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com 63

More before and after shots of the work that was done from front to back!! Top to bottom, inside and out, no stone was left un-turned. Check out the difference in the dash from before and after. AMAZING!! 64 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com 65

I love the choice of caps and wide whites that were selected! 66 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com 67

68 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com 69

(top left) The 48 Hudson Commodore was presented to Staci and Traci s father Bill at the NSRA Nationals South in Knoxville, Tennessee! (top right) Here we have Bill and his wife Doris posed beside their new ride! They will enjoy endless miles behind the wheel of their new Hudson! Here you can see Bill is very pleased with the end result! I m certainly glad that Marcus was willing to share his photos with us, as there were people swarming the car all day long! 70 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com (bottom center) Folks this right here is what our hobby is all about. This project brought tons of enjoyment to Marcus, Staci and Traci. They worked tirelessly for 11 months to produce this awesome car for Bill for his 75th birthday! Happy Birthday Bill! I hope you love your car and like what Marcus and I have put together for you! 71
