European Men s Club Trophy Golf Du Medoc Bordeaux Galway Golf Club Senior Cup Team finished a very creditable 2 nd at the European Men s Club Trophy which took place at the Chateaux Course at the Golf Du Medoc golf resort just outside Bordeaux last week. The Galway lads having had a convincing victory in the AIG sponsored Irish senior Cup at Carton House last month played great Golf all week but came up second best against the very strong French Champions RCF La Boulie from Paris. The French team boasted 2 current full Internationals in their squad of 3. The drama for Galway began on the Tuesday Practice when Liam Power, Luke O Neill and Liam Nolan battling it out to see who would join Ronan Mullarney and Joe Lyons in the Tournament proper. In a pulsating contest O Neill just got the better of Nolan on the last hole with an up n down par to pip Nolan by 1 with Power a further two shots back. The Competition got off to a great start for the Galway lads with Ronan Mullarney posting a brilliant 68 which was only bettered by French International Frederick Lacroix who posted the best of the day 4 under par 67. Mullarney s 68 was remarkable in that he hit all 18 greens in regulation and took 34 putts. The highlight was undoubtedly the Par 5 10 th where he got home with a magnificent 3 wood to 12 feet and coolly rolled in the Eagle putt. Another birdie followed on 15 in what was a flawless round of golf. Luke O Neill provided the second counting score with a solid 72. O Neill started brilliantly with a birdie on the first and despite dropping shots later on, his back to back birdies on 13 & 14 saw him home in + 1.
Joe Lyons after early bogies on 2 & 3 steadied the ship and finished with a solid 74. Galway on -2 were in second position just 1 behind the French and 1 ahead of Portuguese champions Villamoura after Day 1. Day 2 was undoubtedly the winning of the tournament for the French. Their combined score of -7 for the day was just too good for the rest of the field. Joe Lyons was the low scorer for Galway with a level par 71. Starting on the 10 th Lyons dropped a shot on the tricky 11 th but got it back to parity with 2 putt birdie on the par 5 15 th. Another shot would go on 16 but birdies on 1 & 3 would see Lyons finish out as leading Galway player with a 71. Another steady day for Mullarney who started with 10 straight pars before bogies on 2 & 6 saw him sign off for a 73. Luke O Neill in spite of a brilliant birdie on his first hole the par 5 10 th had a tough day and finished with a 77. Highlight for Luke was a great birdie finish on his 18 th the 9 th. Galway with a Team Total now of Level Par had slipped in to third position some 10 shots behind the French and 2 behind the English Champions City of Newcastle who with a great score of -4 on the day had moved into 2 nd position on -2. Lausanne and Royal Waterloo were a further 2 shots back in 4 th & 5 th. Day 3 saw a very determined Galway Team take to the Course. Albeit 10 shots behind the runaway leaders there was a Podium Finish and Silver Medal to play for. After a 2 hour fog delay Galway s youngest player Luke O Neill was first in to battle and what a round he had!!! Birdies on 4 & 6 saw O Neill through the front 9 in a brilliant 33 shots. What can only be described as a minor miracle on 14 where he got up n down from a hazard for an unlikely birdie saw Luke -3 for the day with 4 to play. Joe Lyons with 3 birdies on his front 9 was level par when unlike O Neill ahead the very same hazard cost Lyons a double bogey and he stood + 2 with 4 to play. Ronan Mullarney with 8 pars and brilliant birdie on 8 saw him through 9 1 under par. Back to back bogies on 11 & 12 put him back on his heels but Galway s talisman is never beaten and birdie on 14 restored order and Mullarney was now level par with 4 to play. Galway Team score after 14 was 3 and now level in 2 nd position with Newcastle. Lyons had 2 more bogies on the way in but to his credit finished with a brilliant birdie on 18 for a 74. Mullarney does what he does best and finished with 4 straight pars which included a crucial up n down from the bunker on 17 to finish Level Par for his round. O Neill parred 15, 16 & 17 and his only blemish was on 18 where he failed to get up n down from the greenside bunker. A brilliant 69 which was one of the top 3 scores of the day. Galway Team Total for the Tournament 2. Newcastle player Mark Wharton bogied 16 & 17 and although had a great birdie on 18 it wasn t enough to beat the Connacht Champions and thus Galway GC finished a clear second on 2 with Newcastle picking up the Bronze a further shot back. This was a very satisfying result for the Men from the West and Team Captains Kieran O Mahony and Gerry Cox were in jubilant form afterwards: O Mahony said this has been a great experience for all us. Bear in mind that this is the best finish by an Irish Team in 17 years. We have a lot to be proud off. That was a very strong French Team alongside him a smiling Cox said delighted for the lads. They have worked so hard all year, they have done themselves, the Club, Connacht and indeed Ireland proud this week. Club Captain Paddy Whelan and Vice Capt. Philip Duffy were there to support the team and a very proud Club Captain was in no doubt where this achievement stood in the Clubs long history. To win the AIG Senior Cup in September was very special and to follow up with a performance of this quality
is a testament to the skill and commitment of not just the players but the Management team as well said a delighted Whelan. All in all a great week for Galway Golf Club.
