OVERVIEW Establish a few basic skills Needed from rough, steep, slick or otherwise hazardous terrain Usually assist specialized teams Goal is to get subject to safety as quickly and safely as possible

Medical Assistance Do Not move subject until a medical assessment clears you to do so May assist higher classified medical personnel Holding subject s head is extremely important You must not move or release the head unless told to do so by the medical person in charge

Subject Packaging LOG ROLL One rescuer hold head Two or three roll subject towards them Two place litter against subjects back Subject is rolled back into litter & centered Always place blanket into litter before scooping subject

Subject Packaging Subject must be secured into the litter so he/she does not move within it or fallout Always reassure subject Always address subject by name Check subject comfort Pad under back, knees, etc. Attach eye protection if necessary & protect from sun Apply Spider Strap Assembly Remember Subject Comfort

Subject Packaging SPIDER STRAP Remove Spider Strap, blanket & webbing from bag Place blanket in litter With subject in litter unroll Spider Strap starting from the subjects neck Attach strap to SECOND rail from the top starting from the subjects neck Continue down subject until all straps are securely fastened Use webbing to support subject from slipping down litter

Lifting the Litter Position feet properly Never turn or twist Keep back straight & locked when lifting Keep weight close to your body Grip with both hands firmly Lift & lower smooth and steady Lift with your legs

Team Leader TL will lead & control the transport Only the TL will give commands Need 6 litter tenders to carry litter 3 per side Litter Handling

Litter Handling Litter Captain Litter captain will manage litter movement Stop swing left raise litter Watches for hazards underfoot Right Front litter position is always litter captain Medical Officer Preferably independent of litter tenders Job is to keep sharp eye on subjects status Litter Captain

Stop Can be called by anyone Standby wait attentively Raise Litter Lower Litter Forward Litter move team & litter forward Backup Litter move team & litter backward Reverse Direction Commands Standardized to limit confusion between Team Leader, Litter Captain & other rescuers. Swing Left - move team & litter left Swing Right move team & litter right Turn Left 90 turn left Turn Right 90 turn right Raise Head raise head end of litter Lower Head lower head end of litter Raise Feet - raise feet end of litter Lower Feet - lower feet end of litter

Special Circumstances Litter Wheel Used when terrain is flat & smooth 4 people to raise litter to attach wheel Minimum of 4 people to move litter Caterpillar Pass Used to move subject & litter over or under something such as a log, culvert, etc. Turtle Crawl Used to move subject & litter under something or narrow passage
