Translation by Dr. William C. Chittick His Supplication on the Noble Traits and Acts Pleasing to God 1. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his Household, cause my faith to reach the most perfect faith, make my certainty the most excellent certainty, and take my intention to the best of intentions and my works to the best of works! 2. O Allah, complete my intention through Your gentleness, rectify my certainty through what is with You and set right what is corrupt in me through Your power! 3. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his Household, spare me the concerns which distract me, employ me in that about which You will ask me tomorrow, and let me pass my days in that for which You have created me! Free me from need, expand Your provision toward me, and tempt me not with ingratitude! Exalt me and afflict me not with pride! Make me worship Translation by Ahmad Ali Muhani One of his prayers for Excellence in Moral and Good Conduct 1. O Allah, bless (family). Advance my faith to the greatest perfection. Let my belief be the most excellent of beliefs. Cause my motive to be the best of resolutions and my conduct the best of actions. 2. O Allah, increase my good resolutions. Establish my belief in You. Reform with Your power that which has become corrupted in me. 3. O Allah, bless (family). Grant to satisfy me in that, the care of which keeps me engaged. Cause me to perform those deeds concerning which You will question me tomorrow. And let my days be spent in that work for which You have created me. Make me independent and provide me amply with Your sustenance. Do not let me be tempted by arrogance (caused by wealth). You and corrupt not my worship with selfadmiration! Let good flow out from my hands upon the people and efface it not by my making them feel obliged! Give me the highest moral traits and preserve me from vainglory! 4. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his Household, raise me not a single degree before the people without lowering me its like in myself and bring about no outward exaltation for me without an inward abasement in myself to the same measure! 5. O Allah, bless Muhammad and Muhammad s household, give me to enjoy a sound guidance which I seek not to replace, a path of truth from which I swerve not, and an intention of right conduct in which I have no doubts! Let me live as long as my life is a free gift in obeying You, but if my life should become a pasture for Satan, seize me to Yourself Before Your hatred overtakes me or Your wrath against be becomes firm! but do not let me fall a prey to pride. Cause me to adore You, and do not let my adoration be spoiled with conceit. Issue from my hands good to mankind and do not let it be undone with reproaches. Give me excellent morals and save me from boasting. 4. O Allah, bless (family). Do not exalt me even one degree among the people unless You have degraded me to an equal amount in my own soul. Create for me no outward respect unless You have created for me an equal amount of humiliation in my spirit. 5. O Allah, bless (family). Favour me with a righteous direction which I may not change (for another), a right path from which I may not go astray and a wellguided motive which I may not doubt. Let me live as long as my life is useful in serving You. 6. O Allah, deposit in me no quality for which I will be faulted, unless You set it right, no flaw for which I will be blamed, unless You make it beautiful, no deficient noble trait, unless You complete it! 7. O Allah, bless Muhammad and Muhammad s household and replace for me the animosity of the people of hatred with love, the envy of the people of insolence with affection, the suspicion of the people of righteousness with trust, the enmity of those close with friendship, the disrespect of womb relatives with devotion, the abandonment of relatives with help, the attachment of flatterers with love set right, the rejection of fellows with generous friendliness And the bitterness of the fear of wrongdoers with the sweetness of security! 8. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his Household, appoint for me a hand against him who wrongs me, a tongue against him who disputes anger be fixed upon me. 6. O Allah, leave in me no culpable habit unreformed. (Leave me) no blameworthy blemish unamended, (Leave me) in no imperfect excellence without bringing it to perfection. 7. O Allah, bless (family). Substitute for me love in place of the enmity of the hostile, (in place of) friendship for the envy of the rebellious, (in place of) confidence for distrust of the virtuous, (in place of) kindness for the hatred of those that are near, (in place of) benevolence to kindred for their disobedience, (in place of) assistance for desertion of the near (relations), (in place of) sincerity of regard for the love of the ceremoniously polite, (In place of) good behaviour for the repulsion of associates and sweetness of peace for the bitterness of fear of tyrants. 8. O Allah, bless (family). with me and a victory over him who stubbornly resists me! Give me guile against him who schemes against me, power over him who oppresses me, Refutation of him who reviles me and safety from him who threatens me! Grant me success to obey him who points me straight and follow him who guides me right! 9. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his Household and point me straight to resist him who is dishonest toward me with good counsel, repay him who separates from me with gentle devotion, reward him who deprives me with free giving, recompense him who cuts me off with joining, Oppose him who slanders me with excellent mention, give thanks for good and shut my eyes to evil! 10. O Allah, bless Household, adorn me with the adornment of the righteous, and clothe me in the ornaments of the me and victory over him who bore me ill-will. Grant me an artifice against him who deceived me and power over him who overpowered me. Make false the charge of him who impeached me and relieve me from him who threatened me. Give me grace to obey him who directed me to the right path and follow him who guided me (to it). 9. O Allah, bless (family). Give me grace that I may behave with sincere good-will to him who was insincere to me. Reward with goodness he who forsook me; compensate with reunion he who separated me from him. Make me to differ from him who did backbite me by speaking ill of him and to return thanks for good and overlook evil. 10. O Allah, bless (family). Adorn me with the qualities of the righteous. God-fearing, through spreading justice, restraining rage, quenching the flame of hate, bringing together the people of separation, correcting discord, spreading about good behaviour, covering faults, mildness of temper, lowering the wing, beauty of conduct, gravity of bearing, agreeableness in comportment, precedence in reaching excellence, preferring bounteousness, refraining from condemnation, bestowing bounty on the undeserving, speaking the truth, though it be painful, Making little of the good in my words and deeds, though it be much and making much of the evil in my words and deeds, though it be little! Perfect this for me through lasting obedience, holding fast to the community and rejecting the people of innovation and those who act in accordance with original opinions! 11. O Allah, bless Household, appoint for me Your widest provision in my in spreading justice, restraining anger, quenching the fire of ill-will, reuniting the scattered, Making up the differences between men. Publishing goodness. Hiding blemishes. Lenience of temper. Bending the knee of humanity, beauty of conduct, calmness of disposition, agreeableness of dealings, advancing towards excellence, adopting generosity, forbearing rebuke, showing kindness even to the unworthy, speaking the truth though difficult, Underrating personal good however great, of words or deeds and over estimating personal evil, however small of speech or act. Grant the fulfilment of these wishes along with continual worship of You and attachment to the community of the faithful. Let me withdraw from those who start innovations and act upon self-invented judgements. 11. O Allah, bless (family). old age and Your strongest strength when I am exhausted, try me not with laziness in worship of You, Blindness toward Your path, undertaking what opposes love for You, joining with him who has separated himself from You and separating from him who has joined himself to You! 12. O Allah, make me leap to You in times of distress, ask from You in needs, and plead to You in misery! Tempt me not to seek help from other than You when I am distressed, to humble myself in asking from someone else when I am poor, or to plead with someone less than You when I fear, For then I would deserve Your abandonment, Your withholding, and Your turning away, O Most Merciful of the merciful! 13. O Allah, make the wishing, the doubt, and the envy which Satan throws into my heart a remembrance of Your mightiness, a reflection upon Your power, and a devising when I grow old. Infuse in me Your most righteous strength when I be fatigued. Do not allow me to grow lazy so as to keep away from Your worship, nor let me be blind to Your Path, nor allow me to indulge in what is contrary to Your love, nor join him who has separated himself from You, nor let me keep aloof from him who is joined unto You. 12. O Allah, let me get strength from You in necessity and apply to You in need and humbly entreat You in poverty. Do not let me be tempted to ask help of any other than You when I am afflicted, nor to humbly entreat any other than You when in need. Nor to supplicate another besides You when in fear, lest I should deserve, Thereby, to be forsaken, rejected and despised by You, O Most Merciful! 13. against Your enemy! Make everything he causes to pass over my tongue, - the indecent or ugly words, the maligning of good repute, the false witness, the speaking ill of an absent man of faith or the reviling of one present, and all things similar - a speech in praise of You, a perusal of eulogizing You, an excursion in magnifying You, A thanks-giving for Your favour, an acknowledgement of Your beneficence and an enumeration of Your kindnesses! 14. O Allah, bless Household, let me not be wronged while You can repel from me, let me not do wrong, While You are powerful over holding me back, let me not be misguided while You are able to guide me, let me not be poor while with You is my plenty, let me not be insolent while from You comes my wealth! plans against Your enemy. Let what he makes my tongue utter of indecent words, nonsense, raving, abuse, false evidence, backbiting of an absent true-believer, or reviling one who is present, and other things similar to these, be a speech in praise of You and an utterance of a eulogy to You, an absorption in Your Glory, A thanks giving for Your Favour, an acknowledgment of Your Goodness and an enumeration of Your Blessings. 14. O Allah, bless (family). 15. O Allah, I come to Your forgiveness, I go straight to Your pardon, I yearn for Your forbearance, and I trust in Your bounty, but there is nothing with me to make me warrant Your forgiveness, nothing in my works to make me merit Your pardon, and nothing on my behalf after I judge my soul but Your bounty, So bless Household and bestow Your bounty upon me! 16. O Allah, make my speech be guidance, inspire me with reverential fear, give me success in that which is most pure and employ me in what is most pleasing to You! 17. O Allah, let me tread the most exemplary path and make me live and die in Your creed! 18. O Allah, bless Household, give me to enjoy moderation, make me into one of the people of right behaviour, the proofs of right conduct, and the servants of righteousness & provide me with triumph at 15. O Allah, I come seeking Your forgiveness. I aim for Your pardon. I long for Your forbearance. I trust in Your kindness. I have not with me what would entitle me to Your forgiveness, nor (is there) in my actions what would make me deserve Your pardon. I have nothing save Your grace when I pass judgment upon myself. Therefore, bless (family) and be kind upon me. 16. O Allah, make me speak with righteousness. Inspire me with piety. Give me grace for what is most pure. Employ me in what is most praiseworthy. 17. O Allah, make me walk the most exemplary Path. Let me live and die believing in You. 18. O Allah, bless (family). Bless me with frugality. Let me be of the people of righteousness, of the guides to virtue and of the pious servants. the place of Return and safety from the Ambush! 19. O Allah, take to Yourself from my soul what will purify it and leave for my soul that of my soul that will set it right, for my soul will perish unless You preserve it! 20. O Allah, You are my stores when I sorrow, You are my recourse when I am deprived, from You I seek aid when troubled and with You is a substitute for everything gone by, a correction for everything corrupted and a change from everything You disapprove. So show kindness to me with well-being before affliction, wealth before asking, right conduct before misguidance; Suffice me against the burden of shame toward the servants, give me security on the Day of Return and grant me excellent right guidance! 21. O Allah, bless Household, repel from me through Your gentleness, feed me through Your favour, set me right through Your generosity, heal me the Last Day and safety on the expected doomsday. 19. O Allah, extract from my soul whatever may purify it for Yourself. Preserve those motives for my soul that may perfect it, for verily my soul is liable to come to ruin unless You preserve it. 20. O Allah, You are my shelter. If I grow sad, You are my resource. If I am in need, I cry unto You for help. When deeply afflicted, with You is recompense for what is lost, reformation for what is corrupted and alteration for what You disapprove. Therefore, favour me with security before calamity, bounty before begging (for it) and right direction before error. Spare me the pain of backbiters. Spare me from not bearing peace on the Day of Resurrection and favour me with handsome guidance. 21. O Allah, bless (family). Ward off (evil) from me with Your Grace. Nourish me with Your Blessing. Reform me with Your Graciousness. through Your benefaction, shade me in Your shelter, wrap me in Your good pleasure, and give me success to reach the most guided of affairs when affairs confuse me, the purest of works when works seem similar, And the most pleasing to You of creeds when creeds conflict! 22. O Allah, bless Household, crown me with sufficiency, place in me excellent guardianship, give me to guide correctly, tempt me not with plenty, grant me excellent ease, make not my life toil and trouble, and refuse not my supplication in rejection, For I make none rival to You and I supplicate none with You as equal! 23. O Allah, bless Household, hold me back from prodigality, fortify my provision against ruin, increase my possessions through blessing them, and set me upon the path of guidance through piety in what I spend! with Your Goodness. Hide me in the shelter of Your Mercy. Clothe me with Your Approbation. Help me when matters grow difficult about me (to choose) the most righteous of them. When actions become dubious, (help me to select) the purest of them. When the creeds conflict, (help me to adopt) the most Praiseworthy of them. 22. O Allah, bless (family). Crown me with sufficiency. Adorn me with the grace of Your Love. Grant me true guidance. Do not try me with prosperity. Confer on me the beauty of comfort. Do not make my life a succession of trials. Do not reject my prayer with repulsion, For I do not recognize any as Your rival, and I do not call upon any as Your equal. 23. O Allah, bless (family). Restrain me from extravagance. Preserve my subsistence from waste. Increase my possessions by giving blessing therein. 24. O Allah, bless Household, spare me the burden of earning, and provide for me without reckoning, lest I be distracted from Your worship, Through seeking and carry the load of earning's ill results! 25. O Allah, bestow upon me what I seek through Your power and grant me sanctuary from what I fear through Your might! 26. O Allah, bless Household, save my face through ease, and demean not my dignity through neediness, lest I seek provision from those whom You have provided and ask for bestowal from the worst of Your creatures! Then I would be tried by praising him who gave to me and afflicted with blaming him who held back from me, while You - not they - are patron of giving and holding back. 27. O Allah, bless Household and provide me with soundness in worship, detachment in renunciation, knowledge put into action, 24. O Allah, bless (family). Spare me the pain of earning. Give me the livelihood without measure so that search (after it) may not keep me away from Your worship, Nor have to bear the evil consequences of earning (wealth) by unfair means. 25. O Allah, therefore grant me by Your Power for what I desire. Protect me with Your glory from what I fear. 26. O Allah, bless (family). Guard my honor with prosperity. Do not disgrace my dignity with poverty, lest I beg of those who receive their living from You, (lest I) ask favour of the wicked, be tempted, thereby, to praise him who gives to me and fall into disparaging him who denies me while You are above all of them, the master of Bounty and Refusal. 27. O Allah, bless (family). Give me accuracy in worship, happiness in piety, knowledge in practice 12 24( الل ه م ص ل ع ل ى م ح م د و آل ه و اك ف ن ي م ئ ون ة ال اك ت س اب و ار ز ق ن ي م ن غ ي ر اح ت س اب ف ل ا أ ش ت غ ل ع ن ع ب اد ت ك ب الط ل ب و ل ا أ ح ت م ل إ ص ر ت ب ع ا ت ال م ك س ب 25( الل ه م ف أ ط ل ب ن ي ب ق د ر ت ك م ا أ ط ل ب و أ ج ر ن ي ب ع ز ت ك م م ا أ ر ه ب 26( الل ه م ص ل ع ل ى م ح م د و آل ه و ص ن و ج ه ي ب ال ي س ار و ل ا ت ب ت ذ ل ج اه ي ب ال إ ق ت ار ف أ س ت ر ز ق أ ه ل ر ز ق ك و أ س ت ع ط ي ش ر ار خ ل ق ك ف أ ف ت ت ن ب ح م د م ن أ ع ط ان ي و أ ب ت ل ى ب ذ م م ن م ن ع ن ي و أ ن ت م ن د ون ه م و ل ي ال إ ع ط اء و ال م ن ع 27( الل ه م ص ل ع ل ى م ح م د و آل ه و ار ز ق ن ي ص ح ة ف ي ع ب اد ة و ف ر اغا ف ي ز ه اد ة و ع ل ما ف ي اس ت ع م ال
And abstinence in measure! 28. O Allah, seal my term with Your pardon, verify my expectation in hoping for Your mercy, smooth my paths to reach Your good pleasure, and make my works good in all my states! 29. O Allah, bless Household, incite me to remember You in times of heedlessness, employ me in Your obedience in days of disregard, open a smooth road for me to Your love, and complete for me thereby the good of this world and the next! 30. O Allah, and bless Household the best You have blessed any of Your creatures before him and will bless any of them after him, and give to us in this World good, and in the next world good, and protect me through Your mercy from the chastisement of the Fire! (Q2:201) And chastity in beneficence. 28. O Allah, let my term of existence end with Your Pardon. Verify my hope in expecting Your Mercy. Make it easy for me to win Your Approbation. Let my actions be good in all circumstances. 29. O Allah, bless (family). Remind me to adore You in times of neglect. Employ me in serving You in the days of leisure (intermission). Indicate for me an easy path to Your love so that I may obtain the good of this world and the hereafter. 30. O Allah, bless (family) more than You did bless any of Your creatures before him and more than You will bless anyone after him. Give us that which is good in this world and the next. Graciously protect me from torment of the Fire. و و ر عا ف ي إ ج م ال 28( الل ه م اخ ت م ب ع ف و ك أ ج ل ي و ح ق ق ف ي ر ج اء ر ح م ت ك أ م ل ي و س ه ل إ ل ى ب ل وغ ر ض اك س ب ل ي و ح س ن ف ي ج م يع أ ح و ال ي ع م ل ي 29( الل ه م ص ل ع ل ى م ح م د و آل ه و ن ب ه ن ي ل ذ ك ر ك ف ي أ و ق ات ال غ ف ل ة و اس ت ع م ل ن ي ب ط اع ت ك ف ي أ ي ام ال م ه ل ة و ان ه ج ل ي إ ل ى م ح ب ت ك س ب يل ا س ه ل ة أ ك م ل ل ي ب ه ا خ ي ر الد ن ي ا و ال آخ ر ة 30( الل ه م و ص ل ع ل ى م ح م د و آل ه ك أ ف ض ل م ا ص ل ي ت ع ل ى أ ح د م ن خ ل ق ك ق ب ل ه و أ ن ت م ص ل ع ل ى أ ح د ب ع د ه و آت ن ا ف ي الد ن ي ا ح س ن ة و ف ي ال آخ ر ة ح س ن ة و ق ن ي ب ر ح م ت ك ع ذ اب الن ار. 13
