The R/C Flyer Volume 44, Issue 3 March 2019 Next Meeting March 14th, 2019, Clear Lake Park Building 7:00 PM IN THE PITS The first of March and the club is hoping. It seems every weekend you can find a dozen or so pilots with a large mix of planes. At this point of the year the club has 78 members. I think all of last year we had 70-76. This is nice to see and with that we need to welcome the new members. We also need to make sure that everyone knows the field rules. Last weekend one of the new members named Reed showed up at the field. He is a NASA Co-op from University of Oklahoma. He is an aero grad and seems to be involved with design classes and speed duration contest. He had one of the planes with him. It is super powered Rifle. This things was so fast Jerry could not get pictures. Reed holding his Rifle still for the photos. Last months meeting was a good one with several nice models. We had three big birds and several small EDF jets. A more complete description is given in the February meeting section The next two months are our big events. The first event is the Iron Mike s Swap Meet. For some new members this event is named after a past member Mike McGraw. He was a very active member and started the swap meet. He ran a lawn service called Iron Mike. Thus why its called Iron Mike s Swap Meet. So if you have any items you want to sell bring em on out. Its $5 for selling or buying. Its at the Blue Bonnet pavilion at Gilruth. Several tables are available to set up on. See you then. The other event is the Warbirds over JSC. This year should be a well attended event. The addition of our club members flying at this event is doubling ever year. I can t wait and I know the weather is going to be perfect. We still need volunteers so if you want to help just txt me at 713-542-0987. I still need to get the pilot prizes and raffle prize. So mark it on your calendars. Come out to participate or just watch. Guarantee you will see flying like never before at JSC. Well, that s all for now, Godspeed and safe landings, Mike L. The R/C Flyer - Page 1

MODEL OF YEAR Last up is a movie I just saw. Its Called They shall Never Grow Old. It was a colorized WWI film. Very interesting movie and nicely down. Next up are a set pics from a day at the flying field. I believe these planes are either Robert Ott s or Richrd Vincents. I did notice that all powers of WWII are represented. Keith Fontenot and his Mig 3 WHATS UP AROUND THE CLUB As always, this section is about us, the JSC RCC. So send in those pics and a few words. The more the merrier. Butch s super Cub. It looks like a clipped wing. First up this month are a couple of suggested book reads. First up is a book by Hampton Sides. The book is about the Korean War and the Chosin Resevoir battle. What a story. The death and destruction was unbelievable. In addition, the weather conditions were extreme. Easy read and gives you a good feel about the forgotten war. Next is a book recommended by Walt Lueke. He said it s a good read and a new book about midway. The R/C Flyer - Page 5
An unscheduled landing of a zero. Below is a Bearcat I started several years ago. Its time to pick it back up. She is next in line to be finished. The next pic shows all the planes hanging from the rafters. Now that is a hanger. Below is a way I store my planes. I build a board with dowells in the front and two bolt holes in the back. I then find the balance point and screw in a coat hanger. Its visible right above the logo. Next set of pics are from Walt Lueke. He made a tour of several air musuems. The two that I am showing here are Wings over the Rockies and Mid America Musuem (Liberal, KS) The R/C Flyer - Page 6
F-84 T-33 Shooting Star B-52 F-86 And finally an SE5. Walt must have had a great time. Wings over the Rockies claims it was voted in the top 20 musuems and the Mid Amaerica museum host over 200 aircraft (at least this is what the web says). Anyway, what a tour. That s all we have this month. See ya at the meeting. That is all I have this month. Go flying, have fun, and smile. God speed and safe landings, Mike Laible The R/C Flyer - Page 7
