Pollution Control for Rural Area including domestic sewage treatment and solid waste reuse RESEARCH INTEREST Dr Luo s major speciality is in environmental geochemistry and environmental engineering, and his research interests include radioactive waste management, pollutant transportation in environment, biomass energy development and polluted soil remediation. Dr Luo has over 10 years of research experiences in watershed water pollution control. He has expertise in non-point source pollution control technologies, in particular, including theoretical and technical development in domestic sewage treatment and surface water treatment. His present work focuses on lake pollution control for Lake Tai, Dianchi and Lake Chao, which are three lakes amongst the key water pollution control lakes of China conducted in the Watershed Pollution Control Research Centre, Fudan (WPCRC). Dr Luo developed several decentralized wastewater treatment techniques including Microbial-earthworm Tower Ecofilter (METE) for domestic sewage treatment. The METE was a new kind of sewage control technique in retiform fluvial with high performance and low cost, and it has been used for rural non-point pollution control in about 1000 facility sets in 6 provinces of China, in particular in the Lake Tai basin. Dr Luo has conducted several state key research projects in engineering fields in China, including those from NSFC, three state key water pollution control projects and more than 10 government funded projects. He published more than 20 peer-reviewed journal papers in the last 5 years, 9 of which he was the corresponding author. He currently has 11 patents granted in the pollution control technology area and 20 more are in application. Due to his significant achievement in rural wastewater treatment technology development, Dr Luo was granted Nanjing entrepreneurship leadership in science and technology by Nanjing City Government in 2012. Funded Projects in the last 5 years: 2012.08-2015.12, co-pi, Internal Load Control and Integrated Improvement Of Water Quality Dianchi Lake, Grant Number: 2012ZX07102-004. Supported by Ministry of Water Resources, China. 2007-2011, PI, Some other domestic sewage treatment projects (over 20) supported by local governments. ACHIEVEMENT: Dr. Luo is a science researcher with high level of theoretical background. He has published more than 40 peer-reviewed journal papers, including one paper in Water Research, four in Journal of Hazardous Materials. With his environmental geochemistry and engineering
background, he deals with the environmental problems with engineering technologies through detailed mechanism research. Dr Luo has managed several state key research projects in China, including 1 NSFC project, 3 state key water pollution control projects. Dr Luo is also an engineering expert with rich engineering experiences. His field experiences cover the rural sewage treatment and watershed pollution control. Taking his theory into practices, he developed several innovative technologies for wastewater treatment. The METE he developed was funded by local governments for more than 20 engineering projects, and has been broadly used for non-point pollution control in six provinces of China in the last 10 years. Dr Luo dedicates himself to a watershed management expert. He Conducted a method of source control and integrated management for watershed pollution control and applied them for many engineering projects in China. Source control means that pollutants should be controlled in its sources by reducing the pollutant production, while integrated management presents that all the pollutant in the catchment should be taken account into whole for the nutrient recycle, energy reuse and water resource reuse. This point will be adopted in the catchment management framework models. (1) SELECTED PUBLISHED PAPERS (Asterisk indicates corresponding Author) Yan, C., X. Luo* & Z. Zheng (2013).
