STEWARDS REPORT Illawarra Turf Club KEMBLA GRANGE RACECOURSE Saturday, 3 June 2017 Weather: Track: Rail: Overcast Good(3) +6m 1100m-W/Post, + 4m Remainder STEWARDS: C G Polglase (Chairman), J D Walshe, T A McDonald, T J Vassallo and cadet J J E Earl (ef) RACE 1 ITC Corporate Members Race Day 3YO Maiden Handicap 1000m Ammate (NZ) hung out over the final 100m. C Lever rider, of the gelding, near the 50m momentarily lost the use of his off-side rein before he was able to regather it and correct his mount. Kingston lay out under pressure in the home straight Alassio lay out under pressure over the final 100m Simply Impressive A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have bled from both nostrils for the first time stable representative Mr A Lemarie was advised that the filly would now incur the mandatory 3 month ban from racing (AR53A). Bolly When apprentice S.Clarke was unable to claim down to his minimum riding weight and when no other apprentice was available at the weight stewards permitted apprentice Clarke to claim only 2kgs on the gelding. Apprentice S Clarke was subsequently fined the sum of $200 (LR70). In issuing penalty stewards also considered that apprentice Clarke was also able to retain the ride on Mackellar s Love in Race 5 and again claim only 2kgs when no apprentice was suitable. Was badly held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight and approaching the 300m was restrained when disappointed for a run between Kingston and Simply Impressive which shifted out slightly. For a short distance passing the 100m raced in restricted room when attempting to improve to the inside of Ammate. Herreshoff when questioned,m Bell stated he was under no specific instructions today other than to ride his mount quietly out of the gates and to attempt to obtain cover. He added that after his mount was a little slowly away he was relucent to make use of his mount early as he felt to do this would have caused his mount to overrace. M Bell added that after being crossed by Coloane near the 700m his mount dropped the bit. He added however when placed under pressure his mount responded well in the home straight. RACE 2 Kembla Grange Class 1 & Maiden Plate 2400m Biscuit Change of tactics to be ridden more forward; settled off pace.pulled hard in the early and middle stages. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed it to be mildly lame in the off hind leg Trainer Mr M De Montfort was told that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance prior to the gelding being permitted to race again. Magentaz C Lever reported that his mount was inclined to lay in badly under pressure in the straight. Crimson Halo Rider K Latham was reprimanded for using the whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m four more than is permitted in issuing a reprimand the stewards gave consideration to the circumstances to the race and also ride K Latham unblemished record.
Dripping Carats the mare which was found to have aggravated an old wound to its off side hock during its preliminary was examined by the club s veterinary officer and was passed fit to start. Making the home turn was bumped and taken out by Biscuit which laid out when weakening, shortly after straightening was bumped by Misty Mountain Hop which shifted in slightly near the 200m was brushed by Misty Mountain Hop which continued to shift in Saint Jerome When questioned M Bell stated that whilst he had to make some use of his mount in the early stages to hold the lead he stated that his mount was under pressure from as far out as the 1400m and in his opinion raced like a tired horse and may have come to the end of its preparation. Trainer Mr J Austin advised the gelding would be freshened up prior to next race start. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed no abnormalities. Misty Mountain Hop began awkwardly. RACE 3 One Flush Plumbing CG&E Maiden Plate 1200m Bombardier Near the 250m rider J Victoire accidently dropped his whip. Dream I Can - Bounded on jumping and lost ground shortly after the start was steadied when tightened for room between Samurai Sword which shifted in and Percussion who laid out despite the efforts of its rider. Just For You When the pace steadied near the 900m the gelding had to be steadied away from the heels of Bombardier. Percussion Slipped behind on jumping and began awkwardly near the 900m was steadied to avoid the heels of Samurai Sword, (App A Williams) which shifted in when not quite clear, rider App A Williams was advised to exercise more care. Samurai Sword near the 1000m was bumped by Percussion which continued to lay out. Tata Ma Pick leaving the 100m the gelding overraced becoming awkward on the heels of Thrilled and shifted out and when Dream I Can then improved to that riders inside the gelding was than obliged to race three wide thereafter. Thrilled over the concluding stages was inconvenienced and taken wider when Bombardier shifted out abruptly despite the efforts of its rider. Zatar slow to begin. Near the 100m was briefly inconvenienced by Dream I Can which shifted in slightly. RACE 4 RTS Thoroughbreds PTY LTD F&M Maiden Plate 1200m Chilli Beauty after being slow to begin was then checked when crowded between Bounding Badger and Classic Thoughts which laid in and away from Kung Chi Domino. Laid in under pressure in the straight. Classic Thoughts - Slow to begin. Raced greenly under pressure in the straight. When questioned A Layt stated that after being held up making the home turn his mount was then left flat footed and inclined to race greenly under pressure in the early part of the straight and was also inclined to shift ground approaching the 200m. He added however that his mount responded well over the 100m of the event where it finished its race off strongly Dreamship slow to begin making the home turn improved onto the heels onto Jaunty and had to be checked Jaunty Began awkwardly and made contact with the near gate of its side barrier on jumping. Overraced throughout the early and middle stages and was inclined to lay out. Approaching the 200m shifted in and made contact with Smart Venture which shifted out slightly.
Silent Sea trainer D Beadman was fined $50 for the late application to add a tongue tie to the filly s approved racing gear. Dixie when questioned concerning her riding of the filly and in particular as to how the favourite and eventual winner Silent Sea was able to shift out and secure clear running just prior to straightening App B Panya in the presence of Racing NSW App mentor Mr R Quinn stated that her mount was inclined to race greenly and further had been inclined to lay out as far out as the 900m. She added that whilst she was aware that Silent Sea was positioned to her inside at all times, her mount was inclined to lay out away from that runner and she added that despite her efforts when Silent Sea shifted out towards her mount making the home turn the filly laid out away from that runner affording it a run to the outside of Kung Chi Domino. After giving consideration to App B Panya evidence and viewing the patrol films the stewards accepted App Panya s explanation. RACE 5 Markey Saddlery Class 1 Handicap 1200m Addicitcraft the gelding was a late withdrawal on veterinary advice at 7.41am when found to have some swelling to its neck. Deer Mountain passing the 200m made contact with It s A New Day after being taken in slightly by Smokey Fortune inside the 100m was steadied when briefly tightened for room between It s a New Day which hung out and Smokey Fortune (J Victoire) which shifted in. Rider J Victoire was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances It s A New Day Began awkwardly and shifted in and made contact with Love Las Vega. Rider C Lever reported that his mount hung out under pressure in the straight and felt awkward in its action upon pulling up after the winning post. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities Dreams Alive the gelding was examined by the club s veterinary officer and passed fit to start. When questioned G Buckley stated that his mount travelled well in the early and middle stages however failed to respond when asked to improve into the race and was disappointing A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities Too Fast for Love A post race veterinary examination revealed abrasions to the near side hock M Bell stated that his mount travelled well in the early and middle stages however when placed under pressure failed to respond and over the concluding stages shortened stride and weakened. She added that after beginning awkwardly she immediately eased her mount and attempted to obtain cover behind Too Fast For Love however her mount commenced to race fiercely and would not come back despite her efforts and for this reason was obliged to race three wide for some distance in the early stages before being allowed to stride forward and race outside the lead near the 900m M Kinny added that her mount then weakened in the straight and in her opinion did not run out todays 1200m journey. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities RACE 6 Brian Chudleigh Appreciation Benchmark 65 Handicap 1400m El Venetian struck by the whip near the 200m and had to be corrected by its rider J Victoire Alert By Sea Bumped on jumping, Over-raced badly in the middle stages and passing the 1000m had to be checked away from the heels of Lucienne. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have bled from both nostrils for the first time. Earth When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding C Lever stated that whilst the gelding had trialled well recently on the 26 May at Rosehill, today the gelding travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages however failed to respond when placed under pressure in the straight and was most disappointing Stable representative A Clarken agreed with rider C Lever that the geldings effort was disappointing and undertook to report back to the stewards on the progress of the gelding in the days subsequent. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Lucienne began awkwardly shifted out and made contact with Alert By Sea. Taqaareed after being held up making the home turn on straightening was disappointed for a run between Gitan and Marrock which shifted out and then shifted to the inside of Marrock to continue into clear running. Sworn In began awkwardly. RACE 7 Hollymount Bloodstock Maiden Handicap 1400m Make It Easy after improving into a narrow run on straightening between Playbook and Jardine the gelding then raced in restricted room for some distance thereafter. Cambridge Don hung in under pressure in the straight and near the 250m had to be corrected by its rider Duchess Pedrille Approaching the first turn commenced to race keenly and had to be steadied away from the heels Playbook (J Penza) which shifted in when not quite clear and a short distance later the filly had to be restrained from the heels of Orisppus (B Loy) which shifted in when not clear. J Penza was advised to exercise more care and B Loy was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in when not clear (AR137a). When questioned concerning the performance of the filly, M Bell stated that his mount which was racing with blinkers applied today raced fiercely it shifted to the outside of the heels of Orisppus near the 900m and was obliged to race three wide thereafter. M Bell added that whilst his mount travelled strongly in the bridle until entering the home straight. M Bell stated that when placed under pressure near the 250m his mount responded well initially however its run ended near the 100m. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities Trainer R Quinton concurred with the thoughts of M Bell that the filly had raced too keenly today and undertook to report to the stewards on the progress of the filly in the days subsequent, Roman Son Trainer Mr J Cummings represented Mr A Lemarie was fined $50 for failing to provide the Thoroughbred Identity Card (AR59A). Playbook (NZ) change of tactics was to be ridden back; led. J Penza reported when the filly began particularly well he was unable to comply with his instructions and ultimately led the event without placing his mount under any pressure. Tsubame Trainer P Cave was fined $50 for presenting Tsubame without visors which were part of the gelding s approved gear. When no visors could be located on course stewards permitted the gelding to race with blinkers. When questioned concerning the gelding settling at the tail of the field today G Buckley advised he was instructed to come out neutral on his mount in the early stages and attempt to take up a position with cover mid field. G Buckley added when the early pace was strong and when he assessed that he would be caught wide if he attempted to go forward he elected to ease his mount and take up a trailing position RACE 8 Illawarra Turf Club Class 1 Handicap 1600m Power Law When questioned J Penza stated his mount only travelled fairly throughout the early and middle stages and when brought to the outside on straightening failed to respond to his riding and weakened over the concluding stages. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Ms G Markwell advised the gelding would now be spelled.
California Wisdom was unable to be tested close to the line when awkwardly positioned on the heels of Celestial Choice which shifted in slightly Vanzetta change of tactics to be ridden more forward; led. The C Waller stable reported to the stewards that the filly had an area on its near fore heel that was devoid of hair due to that filly suffering from greasy heel. The filly underwent a veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Celestial Choice passing the 1000m was steadied when briefly tightened by California Wisdom which laid in. Breathing Fire passing the 1000m had to be checked from the heels of Celestial Choice which lost ground after being steadied. Lost its near hind plate passing the 300m. Saga Of the Storm the mare which was a little fractious in the barriers which was then slow to begin (3L).
