Polaset had difficulty obtaining completely clear running in the early part of the straight. Possumnater near the 800m shifted out across the heels of Derry Mary. When questioned regarding the performance of the filly, rider J. Penza stated that his instructions were to be forward. He stated that his mount was stirred up behind the gates and, as the start was effected, dropped its head and lost ground. He added that, as a consequence, he was obliged to race further back than intended. He further stated that his mount raced greenly throughout and, rounding the home turn, was inclined to lay out away from Derry Mary. He further stated that his mount then failed to respond to his urgings and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr B. Ryan confirmed the instructions issued to J. Penza and stated that, in his opinion, the filly raced very greenly throughout and will derive benefit from today's run. He added that the stable will experiment with gear prior to the filly's next start. Mr B. Ryan undertook to report back on the filly's progress in the days subsequent to the race. RACE 4: Terence Gregory Colts, Geldings and Entires Benchmark 60 Handicap 1300m: Halberd began awkwardly and knuckled shortly after. Force The Issue the running of the race was delayed when the gelding cast its near fore plate in the mounting enclosure and required replating. The gelding underwent a veterinary examination upon arrival at the barriers and was passed fit to start. As the start was effected the gelding threw its head in the air and made contact with the face of rider C. Lever. Overraced in the early and middle stages. Laid in when placed under pressure on straightening. Following the event, C. Lever was examined by the Club's doctor and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements. Unadulterated slow to begin. RACE 5: i98fm Maiden Handicap 1300m: Victory Tapestry raced very ungenerously in the early and middle stages. Regrading after beginning very awkwardly, made contact with Lucid Kiss and lost ground. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of the gelding, S. Pollard stated that, after losing ground at the start, he was obliged to ride his mount along in the early stages to obtain a position behind the leaders. He added that with the quick tempo of the race his mount travelled comfortably, however, when placed under pressure near the 300m, commenced to give ground and failed to run on. He further

Waller reported that Alpha Son had a boil on its chest. The gelding was inspected by the Club's veterinary officer on arrival at the racecourse and was passed fit to start. Rider C. Lever reported that his mount hung out when placed under pressure in the straight. Misty Mountain Hop slow to begin. Demilune shifted out on jumping and made contact with Sacred Son. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of the filly, J. Penza stated that after beginning awkwardly he had to urge his mount along in the early stages. He added that his mount travelled fairly throughout the early and middle stages, and near the 800m was under significant pressure, did not respond from this point and weakened noticeably. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia. Stable representative Mr L. Kunde stated that the filly had pleased the stable in its work leading into today's race. Mr Kunde was advised that a veterinary certificate, including the results of an ECG, must be produced prior to the filly barrier trialling to the Stewards' satisfaction. Laucala approaching the 200m, when weakening, was eased to avoid the heels of Baubo, which shifted out. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare, which raced wide throughout, did not reveal any abnormalities. Vain Elaine When questioned regarding her riding of the mare in the straight, rider Ms J. Taylor stated that she was instructed by Trainer Mr J. Coyle that, as Vain Elaine is a big striding horse, she should, if possible, commence her run approaching the home turn to allow her mount to work into the race. She further stated that approaching the home turn she elected to shift out from behind the eventual winner Bannatyne in an attempt to ride in accordance with her instructions as she was unable to improve her position at this point. She added that she was then held up rounding the home turn and near the 300m attempted to improve into a run between Laucala and Power Law, however, her mount was not travelling well enough and as a result was steadied when disappointed for that run. She further added that for some distance thereafter she had difficulty obtaining clear running and near the 100m was unable to improve when held up on the heels of Baubo. J. Taylor then stated that she was obliged to shift to the inside of Baubo to obtain clear running. She added that, as a result, her mount could not be fully tested in the straight.
