In Australia, around 1 in 5 people have some form of disability (over 4 million people). These individuals have significantly lower rates of social participation (53% compared to 83%) and almost double the unemployment rate (9.4% compared to 4.9%). The JST has designed and built two special purpose tall ships (Lord Nelson and Tenacious) which include features not seen on other vessels so disabled and ablebodied crew members can work together side-by-side. There are no passengers and no restrictions. In this way, a JST voyage provides a unique environment where disability is not a factor and those with disabilities can operate as equals alongside the able-bodied and where everyone comes together to work as a single team. This shared adventure and teamwork, in a structured environment, quickly breaks down barriers between people who may not have previously interacted and changes perceptions of what is humanly possible. The JST has received the rare honour of being accredited by the United Nations for the charity s tireless work on disability and inclusion and support for the UN s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The JST is now part of an extremely select group of just 254 accredited charities and NGOs around the world. Accreditation means the JST can now host sessions in the UN, participate in panel discussions and spread its message of inclusion to governments around the world. More importantly, it brings credibility to the Trust s work internationally and provides an essential platform for building understanding with foreign governments.

Don t worry if you or your guests haven t sailed before - most people step on board Tenacious with no experience of sailing a tall ship, so you won t be alone! The permanent crew will support you through all the tasks involved with sailing the ship. The JST try to make their ships a real home away from home during every voyage. The accommodation is spacious and comfortable. The ship has heating and air conditioning, bathrooms are shared and include all the facilities required for those with limited ability. There is also a large mess area where daily meals are served, and a bar where you can enjoy a drink, relax and take in the amazing spectacle of the voyage. The gourmet food on board is plentiful and delicious. The professional cooks are using the freshest local ingredients wherever they are in the world, whether it is fresh fish haggled from fishermen or fruit and vegetables from local markets. They also bake fresh cakes, biscuits and scones for your enjoyment throughout the day. You re sure to never go hungry on a JST voyage. This will be matched with fine South Australian wines for a premium experience your guests will remember.
On board, those looking for an immersive experience will be paired as buddies. A buddy is another crew member who will be your companion on the voyage, and together you will learn how to sail the ship. The JST aim to buddy as many guests up as this integration lies at the heart of the mission. Your guests will soon be part of the team as the buddying and watch systems mean they will quickly create strong bonds with fellow voyage crew. Tenacious, the world s largest operating wooden ship (at 65m and 586 tonnes), will be in Adelaide for an exciting programme of events in October as part of the Annual Adelaide Vintage Boats, Trains and Planes Festival. The JST has now established itself as a not-for-profit in Australia in preparation for this visit and as part of a longer-term commitment to establish a permanent presence in the country.
