The Price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance THE RETURNED AND SERVICES LEAGUE OF AUSTRALIA (NEW SOUTH WALES BRANCH) ANZAC HOUSE, 245 CASTLEREAGH STREET, SYDNEY NSW 2000 Telephone: (02) 9264 8188 Fax No: (02) 9264 8466 Email: admin@rslnsw.org.au PATRON HER EXCELLENCY PROFESSOR MARIE BASHIR AC, CVO GOVERNOR OF NEW SOUTH WALES CIRCULAR NO: I/13 FILE NO: JOB:RB/2251/B/7 15 th August 2013 TO: ALL HONORARY SECRETARIES OF RSL YOUTH CLUBS, RELATED SUB BRANCHES AND YOUTH COUNCILLORS EXPIRY DATE: 20 th December 2013 Dear Sir/Madam, COLONEL FUJ TINKLER MEMORIAL SHIELD COMPETITION The State President of the New South Wales Branch of The Returned and Services League of Australia, Mr D.E.J. Rowe OAM, with the Chairman and members of Youth Council request that your Youth Club make every endeavour to submit an entry in the Colonel FUJ Tinkler Memorial Shield Competition this year. The Competition is conducted each year by the RSL Youth Council to find the pre-eminent RSL Youth Club in the State and is considered by Youth Council to be the most prestigious event of the year. The Shield was donated by the late Mrs H. Tinkler MBE, to perpetuate the memory of her husband who was the founder of the NSW RSL Youth Movement. Frederick Usher John Tinkler was born in 1893. His service to his country during World War One was carried out with distinction, serving with the 1st Infantry Battalion AIF from 1914-1919 in Egypt, Sinai, ANZAC (landings) France and Belgium. During World War II he was on the General Staff (Signalling) AIF Australia 1939-1945. He joined the RSL Movement in 1919 and was instrumental in making the RSL what it is today, in particular, his work with the youth of the country. It is considered his example of dedication, should inspire the youth of today to greater endeavours. CHANGES TO THE COLONEL FUJ TINKLER MEMORIAL SHIELD COMPETITION To be a success, it is desirable that all Youth Clubs participate irrespective of the Club size or activities undertaken. For many years, a number of RSL Youth Clubs have thought that the FUJ Tinkler Shield Competition was biased towards the larger Youth Clubs.
-2- After much discussion it has been approved by the RSL Youth Council and RSL NSW State Council that the FUJ Tinkler Shield Competition should be broken down into three separate competitions based on member numbers as below: 1-200 =17 Youth Clubs; 201-500 =12 Youth Clubs; and 501 > =12 Youth Clubs. It was also agreed that the name FUJ Tinkler Shield be retained for each of the three categories as above and have two new large shields prepared for each of the two new categories along the same design as the existing FUJ Tinkler Shield. The preparation of the new shield will take place after we receive the application forms back from the Youth Clubs and see how well the Youth Clubs support the new format. New judges are also being sought to judge on each of the three categories. The three large shields will be presented to the winner of each category each year and will be retained by the winner for the following 12 months. The three place getters in each category will also receive a small plaque which they keep. The new format for the competition will take effect this year (2013). Each Youth Club will receive the same application form and will decide on which competition they participate in according to their member numbers for that year. Entry forms are to be submitted to the RSL Youth Council (ANZAC House, 245 Castlereagh Street, Sydney, 2000), by Friday 20 th December 2013. Yours sincerely, JEFF O BRIEN MANAGER MEMBERSHIP SERVICES DEPARTMENT
