The Twin Cities had measurable precipitation on 14 days during the month, about three days more than normal. Statewide, April monthly precipitation totals varied from near normal in the northwest to one to two inches above normal in the eastern half of the state. A few locations in east central, south central and southeast Minnesota reported precipitation totals that were up to three inches above historical averages. The preliminary statewide average was 3.02 inches or.37 inches above normal. Average monthly temperatures for April were about one to two degrees above historical averages at most Minnesota reporting stations. While the majority of the month was above normal, a sharp cool down for the last five days of the month tugged down the temperature departure a bit. The preliminary statewide average for April was 45.3 degrees or 1.4 degrees above normal. The 2017 open water season began with normal stream flows across the majority of Minnesota. The far northern part of the state as well as the furthest south east portion of the state saw higher than normal stream flows when compared to normal. The MISSISSIPPI RIVER AT GRAND RAPIDS, MN gage was affected by backwater for a majority of the month. The ROSEAU RIVER BELOW SOUTH FORK NEAR MALUNG, MN gage reported missing data due to equipment malfunction. When comparing received lake levels to their entire historic record, 52% of these lakes were in the Normal percentile, 42% above normal or high, and 6% below normal or low. So far, 65% of the gaged lakes were above their average lake level of the entire historic record, 16% at their average, and 18% of the lakes were below their average lake level. Over 47% of these above average lakes reported elevations more than ½ foot higher than their average. Preliminary Spring 2017 results of 433 statewide lake levels show that 43% of the lakes increased 1 to 24 inches since Fall 2016; 23% of the lakes stayed the same as Fall 2016; and 33% of the lakes decreased 1 to 18 inches since Fall 2016. Six of the 16 selected lakes with information in this report showed High or Above Normal percentiles for April, with one lake at Below Normal percentile. Groundwater levels in represent spring recovery. For select sites where data was provided, much of the data indicated that groundwater levels were at above normal (75%-90%) or high water level (>90%). More data for groundwater monitoring sites would be needed to determine if this was a regional or statewide trend. The information in this report is provided by DNR through long term programs committed to recording and tracking the long term status of our water resources. The current conditions of precipitation, stream flows, lake levels and ground water levels in this report provide valuable information for natural and economic resource management on a state, county and watershed level. The last time there was any drought indicator category was on August 30, 2016. The U.S. Drought Monitor index is a blend of science and subjectivity where drought categories (Moderate, Severe, etc.) are based on several indicators.
