Ask the Ref: Tennis Rules Q: When do we take changeover and set breaks and how much time is allowed? A: This seems to be a common rules problem for adults. It could really cost you if you are not in shape and don t know the rules (See the Special Note below). When players change ends during a set, a maximum of 90 seconds is allowed. However, (this is a problem situation) after the first game of each set and during a tiebreak, play is continuous and players change ends without a rest (it is acceptable to take a quick drink and dry your face as you change ends, but you may not sit down or rest). At the end of the first set, regardless of the number of games played (this is another problem situation), there is a set break maximum of 120 seconds. If the game total of the just completed set is even, then the first game of the next set starts with players on the same end as they finished the previous set. At the end of the second set the break is determined by division. For most divisions it is a ten (10) minute maximum during which coaching is allowed. For juniors 16 and below, the 10-minute break is mandatory and no practice is allowed. For 18 juniors, Men s Open 25 & 30, and
Wheelchair Open the maximum set break is 120 seconds and coaching is not allowed. During adverse conditions and with advance notice, a referee can extend 120 second set breaks to ten minutes. See Rules of Tennis 29, p. 27-28 and Table 9, p. 118, Friend at Court 2008 Break times are from the time the game or set point ends until the first serve is struck in the next game. Many players assume it is the time you are resting. If you have a question about a tennis rule, submit it to Lori or Mike. They will get an answer from a USTA level certified referee and it may appear in a later issue of Whispers SWIM TEAM 2009
