Dear Members, On behalf of the NVA Committee, may I take this opportunity to wish you a happy, healthy and successful New Year. As you will see from the content of this Newsletter, we have arranged another good programme of fencing and one that we hope will appeal to all members, whether they have international aspirations or are wishing to participate for the sheer enjoyment of the sport. So, another year starts with a healthy membership and an enviable list of international achievements by Great Britain veterans. We have been looking at our budget and forecasts most carefully and although we are quite healthy at present, the trend of increased costs for our activities across the board has led us to the conclusion that if we are to continue to increase and improve activities for the NVA, we need to increase the cost of the annual subscription in 2010 from 10 to 15. This will not affect existing members until the time that subscriptions become renewable from 1 st January 2011, but new members joining during 2010 will be required to pay the new fee. The last increase to the annual subscription was made in January 2002 and we have been able to hold to this figure up to now, so we hope that you will understand the reasons and continue to support the NVA and continue to enjoy the fencing opportunities we provide for you. Yours sincerely Frank Mills Chairman From the Membership Secretary. So far this year I have received over 250 membership renewals by standing order - our preferred renewal option. If you pay by standing order you will shortly receive your 2010 membership card in the post. Later this year I will ask you to amend your current standing orders to the new membership fee of 15, so you are in good time for the 2011 payment!! If you use on-line banking it is easy, if you prefer paper - I can send a form for you to fill in and send to your bank. For everyone else I will be sending renewal reminders out by post. Please don't renew through the website, that is for new members only. The reminder includes your details so please take a look and ensure that the information I hold on you is up to date. Please let me know if it is not. John Mason PAGE 2

HI Linda, Not sure whether the photo of Sylvia and Jane was supposed to be a "caption comp" one but how about: " Jane and Sylvia look disappointed. Sylvia says, "They're a lot shorter than I expected" " Cheers Pete Baron Hi Linda, have just seen the newsletter. Wait till I see Silvia!! But sadly it was nothing as grand as Kent veteran sports performer but only Canterbury and District veteran sports performer of the year. She got it a bit wrong! Happy Christmas and see you at age groups. Jane Still a nice award Jane - well done!! ED Dear Frank, Its that time of the year to stop and think about saying thank you to all the people who have helped you during the year. In this respect may I direct a big thank you to you and all of the VETS management team for the hard work and dedication to the job. I know how much goes into running one club so to manage a national organization is another level. I do not get to all the events but always appreciate the positive spirit, effort and welcome given to me. Please pass on my thanks and seasons greetings to everyone involved you do a great job. See you in the new year. en garde Brian Speight PAGE 3

ENGLAND NEWS Your committee have discussed selection for events in 2010. The following indicates our decisions. Home Quadrangular We will need to field a stronger team this year if we are to retain the trophy in Edinburgh. The intention, therefore, is to select the team at the National Championships taking into account results from the Age Groups as well. Please put the date in your diary and be ready to be asked. Commonwealth Veterans This is an individual event and anyone can enter. For the team events we will select the best placed fencers in the individual events on the day. More details will follow when we get information from Australia Future events: Home Quadrangular 24/25 April 2010 in Edinburgh. Commonwealth Veterans 29 September - 5 October 2010 in Melbourne. John Crouch New Competition 1st Veterans Open 3rd and 4th of July 2010 The date of the 1st Veterans Open is the weekend of 3rd and 4th of July 2010 and it will almost certainly be in Dudley. If you are entering, a question from the organiser: Would you be interested in some sort of very informal social gathering on Saturday evening, if I have an idea of numbers I could book a pub meal drop me an email - peter@baronfencing.plus.com Pete Baron PAGE 4

Linda Information of interest! I would be grateful if you could give a mention in the NVA Newsletter to the Merseyside Open 2010, which will be taking place over the weekend of 20/21 February 2010, once again at the Greenbank Sports Academy in Liverpool. As ever, we will be awarding a Best Veteran medal at all six weapons, for which only NVA members or the members of other similar national veterans associations will be eligible. MOFT has always been a popular event for vets and we are hoping to be able to welcome both old friends and new faces to this year's tournament. Please note that the Women's Foil event has been moved from the Saturday to the Sunday this year, in order to streamline the running of the tournament. Full details are available on the MOFT website at www.moft.co.uk, from which online entries can be made and the entry form downloaded. Many thanks.
