CELEBRATING 19 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Washington DC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association April 2012 Recent Events Sunday March 11 Top Golf Clinic It was a beautiful afternoon as 14 of ASGA-DC s finest and several folks from Meet-up visited the very bustling TopGolf for a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon of fun! Since we were there for fun, I will not bore you with details, though I can report that Richard was doing everything he could to have the highest number of Top- Golf points with his personalized targetseeking golf balls registering on the screen, though Leslie and BJ were not about to give up without a fight! Diane was trying to take the long drive for both sexes, though your co-ec did take out his driver and hit a few to the fence, along with several that landed in the most distant target. TopGolf s event staff kept us served with chips and spicy salsa to warm our insides and wine and brewskies to warm our minds. By the time the TopGolf staff told us the awaiting hordes wanted our stations, everybody s golf clubs were functioning, and we are ready for spring! After TopGolf, a number of us headed to King Street Blues Kingstowne for satisfying Southern cooking and lots of chatter. It was a fine way to meet friends and remember our passion! ~Event Coordinators: Mark Hendrickson & Sharon Geyer Friday March 16 St. Paddy s Day Happy Hour On St Patrick s Day Eve, approximately 20 folks from ASGA, Paul s List and Meet-up put on their finest green clothes, and met for happy hour at this excellent Irish Pub in downtown Falls Church, for pints of Guinness, Black and Tans, and wine for the non-beer drinkers. The list included Nancy B, Gail G, Sue B, Subnash C, Greg B, Christine T, Betsy P, Lee R, Lee T, Bob M, Ann G, Betsy O, Lois S, Jerry M, Richard L, Kate P, and Dave S. Besides the great beverages, several brave souls stayed for the Irish stew, Sheppard s Pie, and other Irish delicacies. It was a great time, and many friends were made. ~Event Coordinator: Dave Sheets Friday March 30 Special Member Meet and Greet Happy Hour We had quite a turnout for the ASGA- DC Spring Kickoff Happy Hour on Friday, March 30 at Indigo Landing! We had about 40+ people - and we also almost had the restaurant to ourselves! Among those in attendance were our President, Sharon Geyer; Golf Chair, Ellie Hochman; Social Chair, Fran Mazarella; Communications Chair, Bob Musson; Golf Handicap Chair, Dave Sheets and members Roger Allan, Chuck Davis, Suzanne McNicholas, Jayne Lynch and Connie Reid. Former members included Marilyn Whitehurst (and two friends she brought) and Linda Abbruzzese. We also had about 4-6 potential members there, many from Meetup. ASGA-DC provided appetizers throughout the evening. Handouts with the spring golf schedule were distributed; several additional ECs for golf events were identified. ~Event Coordinator: Mary Lou Kupfer Don t Let Your Membership Lapse... We have renamed the "Just Posted" section to "Upcoming Schedule. In this section we will list all events coming up in the next 30 days and updates for last minute changes and/or tee times if I get them timely from the Event Coordinators. The Event Coordinators will continue to send email updates as they currently do. In the "Upcoming Events," we will list all ASGA-DC events that are outside the normal one day golf, happy hours, socials and are not included in the "Upcoming Schedule" section already. This section will also include any National ASGA events announced. The "Schedule" page will continue as it has in the past including updates, recaps and photos as provided by the Event Coordinators. All Chapter and National events will continue to be listed for the year. We think this will save time for those looking to see what's coming up and what's new in one spot and still have the ability to see past and future events. ~Stan Yackoski, Webmaster About Our Members Happy Birthday to these members: BJ Barger - 04/03 Karen Farrington - 04/13 Irene Kratky - 04/24 Suzanne McNicholas - 04/24 Cynthia Miller - 05/01 Christine Ozyjowski - 05/08 Carroll Robertson - 04/26 Gregory Russell - 04/02 Joanne Surico - 05/02 Daniel Tierney - 04/14 Kenneth Via - 04/26 Linda Winger - 04/06 Colleen Woods - 04/15 These members are up for renewal: (date shown is last day of membership) G. Rules and More Rules Hitting provisional ball twice, then switching to original ball Q. My buddy the rules Czar hooked his drive into the woods (about 220 yards) on our number 5, par 5 hole. Unsure of whether the ball would be found, he declared and hit a provisional ball. His provisional ball was mediocre at best (about 160 Yards) but did land in the middle of the fairway. He hit his next shot with his provisional ball before searching for his original drive. He then found his original drive and declared that he would play his original ball. Is this allowed? What should have been the correct ruling? A. Yes, he can play his original ball. The provisional ball was only provisional until he found his original ball. B. Yes, he can play his original ball even after his second hit of the provisional ball as long as the first hit of the provisional ball was short of where the original ball was anticipated to be. C. No, he can t play his original ball. Are you kidding, once he plays his provisional ball a second time, it becomes the ball in play even if the original ball is found. AND THE ANSWER IS: The answer is not always C. In this case the answer is B. Yes, he can play his original ball even after his second hit of the provisional ball as long as the first hit of the provisional ball was short of where the original ball was anticipated to be. Because the first provisional ball had not gone as far as his first drive was anticipated to be, hitting the provisional ball a second time before looking for the first shot is allowed. However, had the provisional drive been further than the original ball, upon hitting the provisional ball a second time, it would have automatically become the ball in play. USGA Rule 27-2 is the applicable rule allowing that a player may play a provisional ball until he reaches the place where the original ball is likely to be. If he plays a stroke with the provisional ball from the place where the original ball is likely to be or from a point nearer the hole than that place, the original ball is deemed to be lost and the provisional ball becomes the ball in play under penalty of stroke and distance.

CELEBRATING 19 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION APRIL, 2012 Event Dates: Thursday, May 24 Sunday, May 27, 2012 Registrations for ASGA s annual Memorial Day Weekend event are coming in fast and furious. As over the end of March, we have slightly over 100 registered so far. It s a great time to see old friends and meet friends you never thought you had. Dates set for this year are May 24-27, a Thursday through Sunday. We asked Pinehurst to price this event as if you walked-in on your own and wanted the same exact package on the same dates. The standard package would be $1216 and the room-byyourself package would be $2133 at the Carolina. Our packages start at $529 per person, based on double occupancy and $694 per person based on single occupancy, which includes all taxes, resort service fees, gratuities for wait and bell staff, etc. If you priced this event on its own, you d easily pay $1200-$1300 (dbl. occ.) for all that s included. Optional rounds on the day-of-arrival (Thursday at Pinehurst) as well as day-of-departure (Sunday at Tobacco Road Golf Club Rated #4 Public Course in the U. S. by Golf World magazine and a Top 100 Golf Digest) are being offered as well. A registration form is enclosed will be enclosed with this newsletter and you can also obtain one at www.singlesgolf.com/ Pinehurst Of course, outside of everything Pinehurst has to offer, you get to meet beaucoup singles from various ASGA chapters across the USA. To join ASGA, go to www.singlesgolf.com/join and sign-up, or call 1-888- GOLFMATE (704-889-4600) from 9-2, M-F and join over the phone. You can also register over the phone for this event if you d like. Included in the Standard Package: 4 days / 3 nights, based on double occupancy 2 rounds of golf, cart, range balls, prizes for winners and welcoming gift for all 6 food functions: cocktail party (heavy hors d oeuvres and 2 free drink tickets if you register by April 27), picnic-style cookout Friday after golf, Saturday sit-down dinner and 3 buffet breakfasts in the dining room Dancing with our DJ on 1st and 3rd nights (Mike still dances!) The resort service fee pays for bicycle rental, practice green, afternoon tea, on-site transportation, fitness center, tennis courts, outdoor pools, etc. In addition, Pinehurst is offering ASGA members a coupon good towards a 20% discount on a spa service or one round of golf club rentals. See SinglesGolf.com/Pinehurst for details on this coupon. Room-by-Yourself packages and non-golf packages are also available. Non-hotel packages are available only to our Pinehurst chapter members. U. S. Open Returns to Pinehurst in 2014 For the first time in Open history, one venue is the site of both the men s U. S. Open Championship and the women s U. S. Open Championship in the same year. Both championships will be hosted by Pinehurst in 2014. Pinehurst was also the site of the 1951 Ryder Cup as well as the 1999 and 2005 U. S. Opens. The No. 2 course will not be part of our standard package and will actually be closed due to aeration. Variety of Accommodation Options Please review the Pinehurst.com website and check out their hotel accommodations. They re offering the Carolina Inn, the Holly Inn, Manor Inn and their condos again. In addition to these hotels, if your chapter (or group of friends) would like to get eight (8) of your members together and get a villa, which has a common living room and kitchen facility, review the Pinehurst.com website and indicate such on your registration form. Ireland Details out First Week of April Yes, without knowing full details, over 75 ASGA members have placed $100 deposits on the Ireland trip that will most likely occur in July of this year. Final details should be out the first week of April. We re shooting to stage a full field of golfers on each course each of our four days of golf with a maximum of 124 players per course, so please go to the Ireland website, www.singlesgolf.com/ireland The tentative schedule is to spend three days in Dublin, three in Killarney and three in Limerick. You d fly into Dublin but return home from Shannon Airport near Limerick. When online registration is available, please have your roommate sign-up the same time you do. In 2010, we originally contracted for 128 players but when we sold out in three days, many registrants complained because their roommate had not signed-up yet. We anticipate 120-160 at this event and once rooms or golf courses are filled, we will have to cut-off registrations. So please... get your roommate now instead of waiting.
