Page 4 The Morning Line Wednesday, November 25, 2015 Houston Polo Club U.S. Women s Open Championship - Final, Nov. 15, 2015 - ph Kaylee Wroe Story by KC Krueger WHAT A WEEK! The Houston Polo Club closed out its season with a bang by hosting the U.S. Women s Open Championship. Not only did the club have the Women s Open at the 26 goal level, but also the USPA Women s Handicap at the 18 goal level, the Farish Cup Invitational 6 goal, the Bayou City Cup 0 Goal, and a WCT Junior Invitational. A total of 72 ladies had the week of polo all to themselves. The Open final was held on Sunday November 15th between a tough Northern Trust team and an aggressive Rocking P/The Plank Companies team. In the 1st chukker, Northern Trust s Kristy Outhier struck first with a penalty 2 conversion, which was quickly answered by Caroline Anier with a penalty 2 of her own. Julia Smith put in another goal from the field to end the 1st chukker with Northern Trust leading 2-1. In the 2nd chukker, both teams scored 2 goals a piece as Northern Trust maintained its 1 goal lead as the teams took a break for half time. In the 3rd chukker the crowd watched as the momentum changed in favor of Rocking P/The Plank Co s. Another penalty 2 conversion from Anier, followed by a beautiful coast to coast run from Dayelle Fargey left Norhern Trust scoreless after the 3rd chukker, as Rocking P/The Plank Co s took the lead for the first time in the game 5 to 4. The 4th chukker is what polo is all about. Northern Trust quickly found themselves in trouble as they had two penalty 1 s called against them. Suddenly Rocking P/The Plank Co s had a 3 goal lead, 7-4, but Northern Trust wasn t finished playing yet. Smith scored another goal from the field, then Outhier converted her penalty 2 to bring Northern Trust within one. As the 30-second horn blew, Outhier took one last shot on goal from the field, but Anier was there to clear the ball as it bounced off the post. As the ball was nearing the boards, a Northern Trust player fell off her horse and the whistle blew, stopping the clock. The ball was then bowled in and Rocking P/The Plank Co s fouled which gave Northern Trust a penalty 2, which Outhier converted to send the game into overtime, 7-all. The crowd was on the edge of their seats as the women lined up for the overtime chukker bowl in. Northern Trust s Sarah Wiseman took control immediately, sending the ball towards her goal. Anier was there to clear the ball to the corner, but Smith intercepted Anier s clearing shot and hit a beautiful neck shot to win the US Open Women s Championship! Final score, Northern Trust defeated Rocking P/The Plank Co s 8-7. Northern Trust took home soft Yeti coolers and MVP Kristy Outhier was awarded a Texas Polo saddle.
