SEASON OPENERS This year marked the 12th consecutive season that LMU opened play away from Gersten Pavilion. The 11-point setback at No. 20/21 Oklahoma State puts the Lions at 5-16 all-time when opening the season on the road. The Lions last season-opening victory came in 2008-09 when they beat Hawaii, 63-47, in the opening game of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational in Hilo, Hawaii. All-time, LMU is 13-21 in season openers. ABOUT THE UNLV REBELS (1-0) UNLV opened the 2014-15 season with a 77-65 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday, Nov. 14. Three Rebels reached double figures, including Danielle Miller with 23 points, Alana Cesarz with 16 and Aley Rohde with 13. UNLV hit 9-of-19 from three and rode a 43-25 first-half lead to hold on for the win. The Rebels were selected to finish sixth in the Mountain West this season after finishing sixth last year with a 9-9 league mark and 13-19 overall record. Miller, Cesarz and Rohde make up UNLV s returning core to go along with five additional returners and five freshmen. WHEN LAST WE MET LMU is 4-5 all-time against UNLV, including a 71-67 win in Gersten Pavilion in 2013-14. In fact, the Lions have won the past four straight meetings, dating back to 2003. Last year, Deanna Johnson led LMU with 23 points, Hazel Ramirez had 14, Sophie Taylor had 12 and Leslie Lopez-Wood chipped in 11 in the LMU victory. EXHIBITION WINS LMU hosted Cal State Dominguez Hills (Nov. 3) and Bethesda University (Nov. 9) in a pair of exhibition games to get the year rolling. The Lions were victorious in both outings as a Deanna Johnson lay-up with 0.4 seconds remaining gave LMU an 88-86 win over the Toros. Six days later, the Lions pulled away for a 79-62 victory against the Flames. Four Lions scored in double figures in both games, led by Johnson s 19- and 16-point efforts. Emily Ben-Jumbo recorded a double-double in both games, including a game-high 14 rebounds each night. In her first season, Elliott guided LMU to a 13-18 overall record, 6-10 WCC mark and 9-5 record at home in Gersten Pavilion. In 2013-14, Elliott s Lions went 9-21 and 6-12 in the WCC. A second straight season of earning a sweep of PCH Cup rival Pepperdine, and program records set by Hazel Ramirez (single-season assists, career assists) and Leslie Lopez-Wood (single-season three-pointers) were highlights during a season of transition as new leaders began to find their footing. GAME NOTES to LMU from UC San Diego where she had a highly successful five-year run with the Division II Tritons, compiling a 127-34 (.789) overall record and 90-16 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association from 2007-08 through 2011-12. During her tenure, Elliott UCSD to three regular-season conference championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances and one Sweet 16 appearance. She also earned three CCAA Coach of the Year honors, was named the 2012 West Region Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the National Coach of the Year honor. Prior to UCSD, Elliott spent three seasons as the head coach at Portland State where she led the Vikings to a remarkable turnaround during her tenure. After PSU finished with an overall record of 3-23 during her first year in 2004-05, she led the Vikings to a 12-16 overall mark and 6-8 in the Big Sky Conference during her second season. The nine-win improvement ranked amongst the nation s top 20 and Portland State qualified for the Big Sky Tournament for the first time in three years. Before taking the Portland State job, Elliott served as an assistant coach at Arkansas for one season and was the head coach at Cal Baptist for two seasons. She has also served in an assistant capacity with Southwest Baptist, Southwest Missouri State and San Diego State. PCH CHALLENGE Separated by 19.1 miles of scenic coastline, longtime cross-town adversaries Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine have come together in an effort to boost their decades-long rivalry with the creation of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) Challenge. The series, which is in its sixth year, serves as an annual scorecard for the NCAA-sponsored athletic contests between the Lions and Waves, and challenges each institution to rise above the other within the West Coast Conference. LMU and Pepperdine will be represented by over 12 of their intercollegiate athletic teams through both regular and postseason competitions over the course of the academic calendar. Any headto-head competition, including matches in the post-season and tournaments throughout the year, will be counted toward the scoring and added to the scorecard as they occur. For the sports in which the two teams do not meet head-to-head, the teams will battle for points that will be awarded on the basis of overall finish at their respective post-season championships. The Waves have won each of the first four competitions.
