Around THE Club 5325 St. Andrews Arc Leesburg, FL 34748 352-314-9000 www.monarchgolfclub.com Ann Carter - Editor October, 2018 Crown cup starts in a few weeks which means all our snowbird friends will be on the way back to Florida!!!! Craig Misch Pro The calendar may say September, but the sun is still saying July no fall for us just yet! Another fun month here at the Monarch. We had a Labor Day Couples Step Back Scramble with 48 people participating. it was a fun and competitive event which was won by the team of Ralph and Nancy Beighley and Joel and Sherry Anderson!!! Second place Tony and Michelle Penski with new members Ernie and Karen Weicht!!! Third place went to Roy Colmer and Debbie Douglas with Roy and Christa Bowen!!! Fourth place went to Denny and Linda Bettisworth with Mike and Barb Kowalski. Congrats to all the winners and thanks to all of you who participated in this event!!! Welcome back everyone, let s have a great season!!! Labor Day Winners: 1 st -Joel & Sherry Anderson, Nancy & Ralph Beighley Next month will have our first annual battle of the sex s tournament. The men will be taking on the ladies in a team best ball match, should be interesting as well as fun so please sign up to play asap!!! 1

Congratulations fellows!!! 2 nd Tony & Michelle Penski & Karen & Ernie Weicht Vince Laverghetta, Craig Misch, Bob Keating 3 rd -Roy & Christa Bowen & Debbie Douglass & Roy Colmer 4 th -Denny & Linda Bettisworth & Barbara & Mike Kowalski Charity Golf Tournament The South Lake Elks in Clermont had a charity golf tournament Saturday, September 29th for Habitate for Humanity and Florida Elks Children s Therapy Services. There were 88 players that played a scramble. The winners were our guys. Vince Laverghetta, Craig Misch, Bob Keating & Matt Laverghetta. Please welcome the following new members Gary & Lisa Richey The Richey s, originally from Colorado have lived at Royal Highlands for about a year. They have 2 children and 3 grandchildren. Gary was a school administrator Note: Lisa is Linda Carey s sister. (photograph will be in next month s newsletter) MWGA News Esther Patterson Our winners of the weekly games in September were: **Criss Cross (Sept 6): Bev Race, Nancy Beighley and Karen Weicht (tied) **Odd Holes (Sept 13): Christa Bowen and Judy Taylor **Even Holes (Sept 20): Diane Christie and Barb Kowalski **Low Net (Sept 27): Diane Christie and Linda Hodgson (tied), Betty Danish and Sandy Cookson (tied) The games for October will be: *Oct 4 (President s Cup) *October 11 (Mutt & Jeff - Net score on par 3 and par 5 holes) *October 18 (Memorial Tournament)** 2

*October 25 (S&T - Net score on holes that start with letters S and T). Fall Match Play will start on Tuesday, October 16, and runs until December 11 with t-times at 8:00 AM (we have a guaranteed tee time on Tuesdays so when the busy season begins, you will not need to worry about getting one). The sign up sheet for you and your partner is in the Pro Shop. Play will be from the silver tees and you must be a member of the MWGA and have an stablished handicap in the Ghin system. Cost is $20.00 for prize money with the closing lunch billed to your house account. This is a fun competition tournament using net scores. You and your partner compete against another team, for low net individual and low net team scores on each hole. Then in December, we have lunch and award prizes. I have been playing it for several years, and like the fact that it is friendly game and I get to play with my buddy, and get to know other members better. Memorial Golf Tournament ** The Monarch Women s Golf Association (MWGA) will be hosting their 10 th Annual Memorial Golf tournament to benefit Cornerstone Hospice & Palliative Care Foundation on Thursday, October 18. This year s theme is: "Remembering Our Fallen Stars. This Memorial Golf Tournament is open to all residents of Royal Highlands and there are many ways which you or your organization can participate in this very worthwhile cause: Play in the tournament ($40 for Monarch Club members and $55 for non-members, which includes golf, cart and lunch). Make checks payable to MWGA for the tournament. Donate a gift basket to be raffled the day of the tournament or use for the silent auction. Purchase a commemorative Star ($5.00 each) in memory of a loved one or a special occasion. Buy raffle tickets (6 for $5) for a chance to win one of the smaller gift baskets or for the raffle for items that have been donated. Be a hole sponsor ($100) and have an 18 X24 sign with your name or the name of your organization or In memory of a Loved One and/or a Friend at a tee or green during the event. We hope you will consider being a part of this event. Put together your foursome and signup for the tournament in the Monarch Pro Shop lobby. If you have any questions, contact Barbara Colmer, Committee Chairperson, at 352-728-1224 or at smokengolf@comcast.net. Contact Carolyn Skorich for hole sponsorships at 352-365-1556 or at duffycms@aol.com. EAGLES ARE FLYING Bill Parkinson - #18 9/5/18 3

HOLE IN ONE King-Ernie Leffler, Queen Karen Teeguarden Richard Taylor - #4 9/11/18 Terry Stephenson - Maintenance We will be raising the height of the rough to get ready for the cooler months. We do this to help with the cart traffic on the Bermuda grass. This helps to give the rough enough density to take the traffic and be ok come spring time. We will be putting out pre-emergent chemicals to control the poa annua around the over seeded areas. We will also be putting out our winter grass (over-seed) on the 29 th of October. We ask that you keep carts out of fairways for 2 weeks to allow us to establish the winter grass. This is the grass we will have till next summer. Thanks for your help. PLAYING CARD BINGO Diane Christie In September we filled 12 tables... the King for the evening was Ernie Leffler and the Queen for the evening was Karen Teeguarden. We will be having a Halloween Playing Card Bingo on October 31, 2018 with goodies and a costume contest - optional. There will be NO playing card bingo in the months of November and December. We will resume play on the last Wednesday in January 2019. 2018 HOLE IN ONE s Men: Eddie Oberts - #8 1/10/18 Ray Smith - #11 2/8/18 Rick Reaktenwalt - #8 3/17/18 Rick Reaktenwalt - #11 5/19/18 NEW Richard Taylor - #4 9/11/18 Ladies: Barbara Kowalski - #13 1/11/18 Debbie Dame - #11 8/31/18 4
