I m thankful of the attributes and accomplishments of our club. I m also inspired by the potential we have to become even more exceptional. If you missed Saturday s Ball, you missed it. We had the privilege of presenting several awards. Our Junior Sailors of the year were Jordan Previto and Ricky Welch. Yachtsmen of the year were Tom Stokes and June Wiggins. Sandy Pace was presented with the Kapp Service award for her unconditional and untiring dedication to our club. Ricky was presented with Gulf Yachting Association s Laser Radial Award for the second consecutive year. I am proud of all our junior sailors. It s clearly a measurement of success to recognize the young men and ladies who will soon grow out of juniorhood (That s a word now). Sailing is not a men s sport. Sailing reaches across genders and age groups. The friends these young sailors meet when sailing and working on their boats will likely be lifelong fraternal friendships. So let s continue supporting our sailing and boating programs. A stupendous party followed the formalities of the Commodores Ball. During cocktails prior to the presentations, we enjoyed strings provided by Set Sail Yachts. The string quartet consisting of Lucas Walker, Alyssa Graham, Jennifer Palma, and Alex Rayburn performed classical compositions. What a treat! Thanks to Sasha from the Gulf Coast Symphony for assisting with coordinating the young string performers. We busted a move when the Ice Men plugged in and rocked the house with their horn section, guitars, and drums. We have had several request to have the Ice Men back. I m thinking maybe we can kick off an early Spring with the band on the deck before they melt in the summer heat. This was truly a show. These formally trained musicians entertain with an original sound of Jazz, Blues, and pure funk. We have so much more planned for this year. I will leave a little suspense, but look forward to a pile and a half of fun including club cruises, events and parties, and club ambiance improvements. There is ample room for everyone s involvement. So please step up. Be part of progress. Sail on! Darien

HOUSE COMMITTEE JULIE NOBLE Our 36 th annual Commodore s Ball was held on January 2 th. I think a good time was had by all - beautiful decorations, wonderful food, great dinner music and a great dance band. A big thank you to Darien & Trachelle Hill, Shelda Jones, Bo Clarke and Barry Skellie for all their help in making this event a success. We re having a Mardi Gras Party after the Long Beach Mardi Gras parade Saturday, February 3 rd. There will be red beans & rice, hamburgers & hot dogs available for purchase. And since it s Mardi Gras time, our drink of the month is the classic New Orleans favorite: The Hurricane. There will also be a Super Bowl Party on Sunday, February 4 th. We ask that you bring a dish to share and join in rating the best super bowl commercial this year. We ll also have a Karaoke night and a Trivia night. Check the calendar for dates and times. Grill Your Own is still every Thursday. Chef Daniel is cooking up delicious sides and Sandy continues to make great Friday night dinners and her wonderful desserts. Please check the calendar and newsletter for all upcoming events. Also, look for flyers and reminders that might be on our website, sent to you via email and/or text or on the tables at the club, and, as always, see you at your club. Not sure about everyone else, but, I m ready for Spring. I hope everybody has been able to stay warm and avoided any broken pipes. HOUSE COMMITTEE 2 SANDY PACE I would like to say Thank You for awarding me the Howard & Sallie Kapp Service Award for 2017. There are many people who do so much for the club and I am truly honored to have been chosen. Thank You again! BEACHMASTER JOE FLEMING It is a new year and I am making an effort to identify all of the boats parked along the north fence of the yacht club property. If you have a boat parked there and you have not completed the application for Boat/Trailer Dry Space, please contact me at motoring13@gmail.com or 228/224-3086. We do encounter the uncommon occasion of having to clear the yacht club grounds and we must have a means of contacting each boat owner. FRIDAY NIGHT BELL RINGER On pleasant Friday evenings (either chilly or toasty) there is an opportunity for each Club member to take advantage of a bar tab of $250 should their name be randomly drawn between the hours of 7 and 8:30. But you have to be present in the clubhouse when they call you name. Otherwise, you forfeit your prize. Friday evenings are filled with good food, good friends and a welcoming atmosphere. You have the further advantage of a Happy Hour bar until 7:00 pm. Since the last publication of this Newsletter, the following members have missed collecting their prize: Paul Dorris, Paul Sharrow, Angie Johnson, Kert Meyer and Dorothy Becker. Don t let this happen to you. Come to the Club and enjoy yourself.
