Issue 8 Friday, February 12, 2016 Madison Thompson Editor The DHS Pompette Squad competed at the IHSA Sectional on January 23 rd. They competed against 16 teams, and placed 8 th. Their coach, Amre Carey, says that she was very happy with their performance and that there wasn t anything they could ve done better. With their season being over, they plan to start recruiting new members. Their theme for next year s competitions will possibly be a hip-hop or jazz routine focusing on woman empowerment. Along with their practices, they plan on holding more team bonding events. If you are interested in joining the team, contact Ms. Carey in room 124 for information about try-outs. DHS Cheerleaders Slay State for Second Year Danville High School s cheerleaders represented, not only their school, but also their city. Taking on their first competition in Paris and receiving first, they continued their winning streak throughout their season. After taking home 3 rd place at IHSA Sectionals, our BBIM s went to state for their second year in a row. Last year was the first year Danville High School cheerleaders went to state. To do it a second year is amazing. I expected them to do well, but they came in and did better than last year, Cheerleading Coach Tatianna Buchanan and Ta Maya Robinson Staff Sharda Pascal said. My last year as a cheerleader was one to remember, said Senior and Co- Captain Sarah Strader when asked how she felt about this being her last time competing for DHS. The people that I bonded with and the things that I got to participate in will be unforgettable. I will be sad when it s all done and over with. Competition was my second home. I will miss feeling the rush of excitement before stepping out on the mat to compete. Competitions were like a whole other world for me. 1
Panthers Didn t Pan Out, Taking An L By: Marcus C. Coe & Jaylen T. Ross Last edition we wrote about how amazing the Panthers were, how the odds were stacked in their favor, and how it d be nearly impossible for them to lose but we were wrong. They lost 10-24 as they were held to only one touchdown and I (Marcus) literally cried like a little baby about the L we took. If you were watching the game it s obvious why we lost, our offensive line was weaker than a 3 year old kid and our receivers looked like they put a fresh coat of melted butter on their hands before they went to catch the ball. Quarterback Cam Newton was supposed to lead his team and take the helms of the high horse. The Broncos defense was too much for the Panthers, struggling to get anything going on offense. Cam did not look like himself at all on the field. The fun-loving, confident, leader looked frustrated, and timid. The Broncos took him completely off his game. He was seen getting angry when plays did not go his way, and keeping to himself on the sideline. Cam, a young quarterback destined for greatness, still has some maturing to do. Denver who had the best defense in the NFL completely destroyed our offensive line. Cam Newton was sacked 6 times in the super bowl, two of them causing him to fumble and turn over the ball. Out of 44 pass attempts, Cam Newton only completed 18. THAT S LESS THAN HALF. But it s not Cam s fault, it s our receivers who, like we said earlier, looked like they put a fresh coat of melted butter on their hands before they went to catch the ball. What is Cam Newton s fault is when he fumbled the ball late in the 4 th quarter when we were only down by 6 and were in a prime position to make a comeback, he choked and backed up away from the ball instead of diving on it to recover it. Some said he was too afraid to dive down there with all those big dudes but all year long he s been purposely running into/over linemen so that s no excuse. But all in all, in the mist surrounding the Super Bowl we can bet the Panthers learned a lot from the lost. Next year is a new year, and the Panthers will be hungry to make a statement. You can bet that the Panthers will not just lie over and become prey, but instead maintain that predator inside them. He failed the Panthers, Panthers fans, the Carolina s, and Jaylen and I. It sucks we lost but next year we will be back and stronger than ever! #KeepPounding P.S. Jaylen and I would like to give a special shoutout to our boy J.D. Richardson who dealt with all our big talk about how the Panthers would win. He was right, and though it s hardly ever this way, we were wrong. His article was amazing and he found amazing facts that his team backed up last week in the Super Bowl. Much respect J.D. 2
How The NBA Tweaked And Set Us Men Up! Marcus C. Coe Staff The NBA All-Star weekend is coming up and after all the events the NBA All-Star game caps it off and ends the weekend. It s arguably one of the most fun games to watch of the year because it takes all the best players from the Western Conference and all the best from the Eastern Conference and pairs them into a West vs. East game. Who wouldn t want to see Kobe Bryant, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, and Russell Westbrook all on the court at the same time and on the same team? And that s just the west s starters. This year is sizing up to being one of the best NBA All-Star Games ever! If you re interested in watching the All -Star Game it s being aired on Sunday, February 14 th. You know what else is being held on February 14 th? VALENTINE S DAY! Who elected to hold the All-Star Game on the one day where men have to give their special other 100% of their attention? THIS IS OUT- RAGEOUS! Now instead of having a nice romantic, amazing, peaceful day with my girl, I have to hear her yell at me for 2 hours because I m not paying enough attention to her, and that s understandable. She s not in the wrong and I understand why she d be mad. The person who decided to schedule the game for Valentine s Day is in the wrong and I just really don t understand what caused whoever it was to think it s at all the least bit acceptable to set such an important game for men on such an important day for women. In more modern and understand words, whoever set the game for Valentine s Day tweaked hard. This is going to cause so many arguments between couples around the U.S., because regardless of how much we love not arguing with our significant others, we can t miss the All-Star Game. The male population as a whole has been set-up. I think this is a test that 99% of us will fail. It s our girl vs. our game and us guys are fighting an uphill battle. Many of us will make the wrong decision and watch the game, but if watching the game is wrong I don t want to be right. I am aware I ve been set up by the NBA but I don t care. I will watch the game and reap the consequences, and any man in a relationship with a girl who doesn t like watching basketball that s brave enough to join me in walking into this trap, I salute you. May the game be amazing and you have an understanding and non-violent significant other. 3

Bear Necessity Trenton McClain & Caitlin Whitehair Editors Having trouble getting your date a gift on Valentine s Day? You no longer have to stress because we have the answers you ve been searching for! In the great words of DJ Khalid Getting them a bear is the key to success. Okay, maybe he didn t say that, but that doesn t make it false. Girls want bears, fellas. We took it upon ourselves to ask girls what they would prefer on Valentine s Day, and they said a bear each time. They chose from chocolates, flowers, cards, or a teddy bear, and the only one that was chosen was the bear. So bust those wallets out and head straight to Build A Bear. Don t forget their favorite candy! Or just go all out and get them all for that special someone. 4
What Single People do on Valentine s Day (According to DHS) Trenton McClain & Caitlin Whitehair Editors Valentine s Day is coming up quick and love is soon to be in the air, well for some. As for the single-pringles, they have their own plans. We asked a variety of students what they think single people actually do on Valentine s Day. Netflix will be the single s lover for the day as they binge watch Grey s Anatomy and Orange is the New Black. Ice cream will ironically warm the hearts of those who can t melt into the arms of others. Food? You know that refrigerator will be getting so much attention. Girls and guys all over the world weep as they play that Bryson Tiller and Drake playlist. Super Bowl Commercials Julia Watson & Madison Thompson Staff and Editor They might surprise their best friend or their mom with a heart shaped cookie. After many hugs from their mother, they create a new account on Match.com and search for other lonely hearted beings. You ve got a match!? Nah, for real, light those candles for your mom s date. Cry a river to fill the tub and take a warm bathe, but skin gets dry afterwards, so it s best you apply that lotion. They spend some time on their computer, and sometimes it updates itself and clears the browser history. Oh well. Show your animals some love and pet that kitty, hug your dog; animals need love too. Post a picture on Facebook with them with the caption This is the only bae I need. Feeling Loved. While they re at it, they like other people s pictures and comment You got a Kik? No reply. All jokes aside, Valentine s Day can be a great day even for people who don t have dates. Hang out with friends and get them gifts just to make them smile. It doesn t have to be a lonely day. Remember the words of Kendrick Lamar I love myself. Hope you all have a great Valentine s Day, make it a fun one. Super Bowl Sunday is a game that most Americans look forward to every year. But are they really watching it for the game, or just the commercials? Super Bowl commercials are usually the most expensive, yet hilarious commercials of the year. This year there were many good contenders, but DHS students have chosen their top three. The favorite was, of course, the Mountain Dew commercial with Puppy Monkey Baby. In second is the commercial with Kevin Hart, and last, the Doritos commercial with a mother getting an ultrasound, and where the baby is born by chasing a Dorito that was thrown across the room. 5
