NEBRASKA SOFTBALL COMMUNICATIONS CONTACT: MATT SMITH MSMITH@HUSKERS.COM (402) 472-7780 (402) 770-5926 PRACTICE DAY Wednesday, May 18 Nebraska Practice 1:15 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. GAME 53 Louisville (35-15) Thursday, May 19 4:30 p.m. (ESPN2) The Nebraska softball team faces Louisville on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in a first-round matchup at the NCAA Columbia (Mo.) Regional. The game will be televised on ESPN2, and a free radio broadcast will be available on Huskers.com. The Huskers are making their 24th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, a total that ranks 10th in NCAA history. Rhonda Revelle is taking her 20th Nebraska team to the postseason, becoming only the fifth active NCAA Division I coach to qualify for 20 NCAA Tournaments. Nebraska has won eight NCAA Regional titles in school history, including four under Revelle and two the past three seasons. The Huskers are returning to the site of their last NCAA Regional title, as Nebraska won the 2014 NCAA Columbia (Mo.) Regional. Nebraska is making its 24th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, a total that ranks 10th in NCAA Division I history. NU has appeared in 20 of the last 22 NCAA Tournaments. The Huskers own a 60-50 all-time record in the NCAA Tournament, with the 60 victories ranking 15th in NCAA Division I history. Nebraska owns a 50-33 record in NCAA Regional play, including winning eight regional titles. Nebraska has won at least one game in 22 of its first 23 NCAA Tournament appearances. NU s senior class has combined for a 10-8 record in the NCAA Tournament with two NCAA Regional titles and one trip to the WCWS (2013). TWO HUSKERS TO WATCH MJ Knighten, a first-team All-Big Ten selection, ranks second nationally with 21 home runs, one shy of the Husker record. Knighten also ranks 11th nationally in runs and 15th in RBIs. GAME 54 Missouri (39-14) Friday, May 20 1 p.m./3:30 p.m. (ESPNU/ESPN3) THIS WEEK S TOP 10 -OR- NCAA COLUMBIA (MO.) REGIONAL Columbia, Mo. University Field GAME 54 BYU (35-19) Friday, May 20 1 p.m./3:30 p.m. (ESPNU/ESPN3) Nebraska lost its first game that year before bouncing back to win four games in less than 24 hours. The Huskers knocked off Missouri twice to win the regional, marking the only time since 2008 that the Tigers have failed to win a regional title. Four current Husker hitters started all four games of the 2014 regional. In the two wins over Missouri, those four combined to go 10-for-31 (.323) with two homers and nine RBIs. In the circle, Emily Lockman earned the win in the if-necessary championship game, allowing one run in 5.0 innings. The Huskers hope history repeats itself this week, as Nebraska s senior class seeks a third NCAA Regional title to go along with one Big Ten regularseason championship (2014) and one trip to the Women s College World Series (2013). Nebraska is 1 of 4 teams nationally with wins over three of the top eight national seeds, along with Auburn, Florida and Texas A&M. The Huskers have played each of the top four teams in this week s NFCA top-25 poll, with wins over No. 2 Michigan and No. 4 Oregon. Nebraska has come from behind in 17 of its 33 victories this season, including six wins where the Huskers trailed by three or more runs. The Huskers have scored the winning run in the seventh inning or later in 11 of their 33 victories this season, including seven walk-off wins. Emily Lockman owns 3-2 record with a 1.31 ERA in five career NCAA Tournament starts. First-team All-Big Ten pick Kiki Stokes has tied the Nebraska record with 199 career runs scored. Stokes has also become just the second Husker to total 70 hits in back-to-back seasons. 2016 NEBRASKA SCHEDULE (33-19) UNI-Dome Classic (hosted by Northern Iowa) Feb. 12 at Northern Iowa W, 7-4 (8) Feb. 13 vs. Western Illinois W, 3-2 Feb. 13 vs. Drake W, 11-2 (5) Feb. 14 vs. Green Bay W, 8-0 (5) Feb. 14 vs. Saint Louis W, 7-4 Big Ten/ACC Challenge (at North Carolina State) Feb. 19 at North Carolina State W, 6-1 Feb. 20 vs. Louisville W, 4-3 Feb. 20 at North Carolina State L, 6-11 Feb. 21 vs. Louisville W, 3-0 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic (privately hosted) Feb. 26 vs. No. 7 Oregon W, 6-5 Feb. 26 vs. No. 1 Florida L, 0-8 (5) Feb. 27 vs. San Diego State W, 3-1 Feb. 28 vs. No. 9 Washington L, 5-6 (9) March 5 Wichita State (Game 1) W, 6-4 March 5 Wichita State (Game 2) L, 1-2 March 6 Wichita State W, 10-5 Louisville Slugger Invitational (hosted by Arizona State) March 11 vs. No. 9 James Madison W, 8-4 March 11 at No. 21 Arizona State L, 0-7 March 12 vs. No. 9 James Madison L, 0-6 March 12 vs. Ohio State W, 5-4 March 13 vs. Georgetown W, 12-4 (5) March 16 Omaha W, 12-8 Easton Tournament (hosted by Cal State Fullerton) March 18 vs. UNLV W, 6-1 March 19 vs. New Mexico L, 3-6 March 19 vs. Arkansas L, 10-11 March 20 vs. No. 13 Oklahoma L, 2-4 March 20 vs. DePaul W, 7-5 March 25 at Illinois* W, 10-2 (5) March 26 at Illinois - 1* L, 3-8 March 26 at Illinois - 2* L, 2-10 (6) March 29 South Dakota State W, 3-2 April 1 at Maryland* L, 4-7 April 2 at Maryland* W, 14-2 (6) April 3 at Maryland* W, 26-4 (5) April 6 Iowa (Game 1)* W, 6-5 April 6 Iowa (Game 2)* W, 3-1 April 8 No. 1 Michigan* W, 1-0 April 9 No. 1 Michigan* L, 1-4 April 10 No. 1 Michigan* L, 6-8 April 15 at Northwestern* W, 4-3 April 16 at Northwestern* W, 8-1 April 17 at Northwestern* W, 11-9 (11) April 22 at No. 24 Minnesota* L, 0-6 April 23 at No. 24 Minnesota* L, 10-11 April 29 Purdue* L, 3-4 (8) April 30 Purdue* W, 8-0 (5) May 1 Purdue* W, 4-3 May 6 Wisconsin* W, 13-8 May 7 Wisconsin - 1* L, 4-6 (14) May 7 Wisconsin - 2* W, 6-5 (9) May 12 vs. Purdue W, 8-0 (5) May 13 at Penn State L, 7-8 NCAA Columbia (Mo.) The returning all-region players include two-time honorees Emily Lockman and Cassie McClure and 2015 selections MJ Knighten and Kiki Stokes. Five Huskers are returning all-conference selections, which ties for the second-most returning allconference players in school history. The returning all-conference players include threetime All-Big Ten selection Emily Lockman, two-time honorees Alicia Armstrong and MJ Knighten, 2015 All-Big Ten pick Kiki Stokes and Cassie McClure, a 2014 All-Big 12 selection at Texas Tech. Nebraska s captains this spring are seniors Alicia Armstrong, Mattie Fowler and Kiki Stokes. The trio are serving as captains for the second straight season. Fowler has served as a team captain each of the last four seasons, becoming the first four-time captain in school history. Nebraska s 2016 roster consists of 19 players, which ties for the third-largest roster in school history. Sixteen of Nebraska s 19 players are returners. The Huskers 16 returning players are tied for the most returners under Rhonda Revelle (1993-present). Despite featuring the highest number of returning players under Revelle, NU still features a youthful roster in 2016. Ten of the Huskers 19 players are freshmen or sophomores. Nebraska features five pitchers on its roster, marking the first time since 1997 that NU has had a fivepitcher rotation. The Husker roster features eight Nebraska natives, tying for the program s most in-state players since softball became an NCAA sport in 1982. Six Huskers were named their state s high school player of the year, representing four states. The Huskers who earned state high school player-ofthe-year honors include: Alicia Armstrong (Nebraska); Mattie Fowler (Arizona); Kaylan Jablonski (Nebraska); Emily Lockman (California); Cassie McClure (Texas); and Madi Unzicker (Nebraska). Three of Nebraska s five pitchers were honored as their state s player of the year, including Jablonski (Nebraska), Lockman (California) and McClure (Texas). Rhonda Revelle is in her 24th season leading her alma mater in 2016. Revelle is the longest serving female head coach in the history of Nebraska Athletics. Revelle owns 911 wins at NU. She is the all-time wins leader (male or female) in Nebraska Athletics history. Revelle posted her 900th Husker win in Nebraska s record-breaking 26-4 victory at Maryland on April 3. Revelle became the 12th active NCAA Division I coach to win 900 games at his or her current school. Associate Head Coach Lori Sippel is in her 27th year at Nebraska. Sippel is the longest-tenured female assistant coach in the history of Nebraska Athletics. Revelle (1981-83) and Sippel (1985-88) also played for Nebraska. Counting their time as both a player and coach, Revelle and Sippel have been a part of 1,216 of Nebraska s 1,392 all-time victories (87 percent). Assistant coach Diane Miller rounds out the Husker coaching staff. In her eighth season, Miller has helped Nebraska s offense set more than 30 school records. Revelle, Sippel and Miller were named the Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year in 2013 and 2014. Nebraska played 44 percent of its regular-season schedule against teams that made the 2016 NCAA Tournament (22 of 50 games). 3 NOTING THE COLUMBIA (MO.) REGIONAL The NCAA Columbia (Mo.) Regional is one of four regionals where all four teams have at least 33 wins. The average RPI of the four teams in the Columbia Regional is 35.8, making it the fifth-toughest regional in terms of average RPI ranking. Missouri is hosting an NCAA Regional for the eighth straight season. Louisville is making its second straight trip to Columbia for the NCAA Tournament, while Nebraska is making its second trip in three seasons. Missouri has won seven regional titles in the last eight seasons. The only year the Tigers have not won a regional title since 2008 was in 2014, when Nebraska defeated Missouri twice to win the Columbia Regional. There are only 13 players nationally who have produced 50 hits, 50 runs and 50 RBIs in 2016, and three of them are in the Columbia Regional (Nebraska s MJ Knighten and Missouri s Emily Crane and Sami Fagan). There are only 12 schools in the country that have ranked in the top 50 nationally in scoring each of the last five years (2011-15) and that group includes Missouri and Nebraska. Both the Tigers (13th) and Huskers (27th) also rank in the top 50 nationally in scoring this season. 2016 TOUGHEST REGIONALS BY AVERAGE RPI Regional Low RPI High RPI Average Norman 3 48 30.0 Eugene 9 63 30.5 Tuscaloosa 4 50 32.8 Auburn 5 57 35.0 Columbia 12 51 35.8 NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY OF COLUMBIA (MO.) NU is 29-4 when holding its opponent to five runs or less. The Huskers are averaging 6.1 runs per game this season, which would be the second-highest total in school history, trailing only last year s average (6.9). The Huskers currently rank in the top five in school history in home runs (2nd, 64), on-base percentage (2nd,.397), slugging percentage (3rd,.489), extra-base hits (4th, 143) and batting average (5th,.300). Nebraska has scored 316 runs this season, marking its fourth straight season scoring 300 or more runs. In the first 37 seasons in program history, the Huskers totaled 300 runs only three times. Kiki Stokes (229), Alicia Armstrong (225) and Mattie Fowler (203) have all started more than 200 games. NEBRASKA NOTES HUSKER QUICK HITS Laura Barrow owns a career-long nine-game hitting streak. Barrow is 12-for-26 (.462) during the streak. Mattie Fowler owns a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 408 chances defensively. There has been only one Husker to post a perfect 1.000 season fielding percentage, with a minimum of 150 chances (catcher Jenny Smith in 272 chances in 1996). Fowler has produced both a hit and an RBI in seven consecutive games, totaling 10 hits and 13 RBIs in those seven games. The NU record for most consecutive games with an RBI is 10 by Ashley Guile in 2012. MJ Knighten ranks in the top 15 nationally in home runs (2nd), runs (11th), RBIs (15th) and slugging percentage (15th). Knighten has more home runs this season (21) than strikeouts (13). She also has more than twice as many extra-base hits (29) as strikeouts (13). Cassie McClure leads the Big Ten and ranks 15th nationally with five saves this season. McClure is one of only 12 pitchers nationally with 15 wins and five saves. Kiki Stokes has hit safely in nine straight games, going 16-for-34 (.471) during the streak. Rhonda Revelle owns 45 NCAA Tournament wins at NU. Her 45 individual wins are more than all but 24 Division I softball programs have recorded in their history. HUSKERS EARN ALL-BIG TEN HONORS A trio of Huskers earned All-Big Ten accolades on May 11. Senior Kiki Stokes and junior MJ Knighten were named to the All-Big Ten first team, while senior Mattie Fowler was a second-team selection and was the first baseman on the Big Ten All-Defensive Team. Stokes and Knighten also earned first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2015. They were among seven players to repeat as a first-team All-Big Ten selection. Stokes is the first NU outfielder to be a two-time firstteam all-conference pick since Nicole Trimboli in 2004. Knighten is the first Nebraska third baseman to be a two-time first-team all-conference selection since Jessica Yoachim in 2006. Knighten earned All-Big Ten accolades for the third straight season. 7 JABLONSKI TOSSES NO-HITTER Sophomore Kaylan Jablonski tossed a no-hitter in Nebraska s 8-0, five-inning win vs. Purdue on April 30. The no-hitter was her first solo no-hitter, although she did start and throw 3.0 innings as part of a combined sixinning no-hitter vs. Montana on Feb. 7, 2015. Jablonski allowed only one base runner - a second inning walk - and retired the final 12 Boilermakers. Jablonski became the 20th Husker pitcher to throw a no-hitter (38th all-time no-hitter in Nebraska history). Jablonski became the first Husker to throw a no-hitter since Tatum Edwards in the 2014 NCAA Regional. Stokes was selected sixth overall by the Scrap Yard Dawgs. After being selected sixth overall, Stokes is the highest drafted Husker since the NPF re-established operations in 2004. She is also the first Husker to be a first-round NPF Draft pick since Ashley DeBuhr in 2007. Stokes also owns the distinction of being the first-ever draft pick for the Scrap Yard Dawgs expansion franchise. RECORDS FALL IN 26-4 WIN AT MARYLAND Nebraska made Rhonda Revelle s 900th Husker win even more memorable with a 26-4 win at Maryland on April 3. The Huskers set a school record with their 26 runs, breaking the previous record of 23 runs against UMKC on April 11, 1996. It was only the third time Nebraska has scored 20 runs in a game and the first time the Huskers have ever scored 20 runs in a conference game. The 22-run margin of victory marked the largest conference win in program history and was one run shy of the largest overall margin of victory in school history. Nebraska set a school record with 23 RBIs. Kiki Stokes set a school record with five runs scored, becoming the first Husker to score five times in a game. NEBRASKA NOTES McCLURE TWO-TIME PITCHER OF THE WEEK Junior Cassie McClure earned her second Big Ten Pitcherof-the-Week accolade of the season on April 11. McClure was honored after going 1-0 with one save and a 2.21 ERA in four appearances last week. She allowed only two earned runs in 11.0 innings over two starts against No. 1 Michigan, including a four-hit shutout of the Wolverines. McClure also recorded her Big Ten-leading fifth save of the season in mid-week action against Iowa. McClure was first honored following the season s opening weekend, after she went 2-0 with two saves in 12.0 scoreless innings at the UNI-Dome Classic. In her lone start against Green Bay, McClure tossed a one-hit shutout, the first shutout of her career. She also added a career-high 10 strikeouts. STOKES BIG TEN CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior Kiki Stokes shared Big Ten Player of the Week honors for the first time this season on April 18. She then drew three walks in game two before tying career highs with four hits and two home runs in game three. KNIGHTEN EARNS BIG TEN WEEKLY HONOR MJ Knighten began her year with a fast start, batting.632 (12-for-19) with one double, five homers and 14 RBIs the opening weekend. NEBRASKA AT THE 2015 NCAA TOURNAMENT Nebraska went 1-2 with a pair of late losses at the 2015 NCAA Baton Rouge (La.) Regional. In the opener, NU led 2-0 before Arizona State scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kiki Stokes went 2-for-3 offensively, while Emily Lockman did not allow an earned run in 5.2 innings, but did walk 10. The Huskers avoided elimination the next day behind a two-hit shutout from Kaylan Jablonski, who became only the second Husker freshman to throw a shutout in the NCAA Tournament. MJ Knighten was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to pace the Nebraska offense. 24 ALL-TIME NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES NCAA TOURNAMENT NOTES Nebraska s bid for a third straight NCAA Regional title came to an end with a heartbreaking 3-2, 10-inning loss at LSU, the No. 5 national seed. Both teams scored once in the fourth inning but did not score again until the Tigers grabbed a 3-1 lead with a pair of RBI singles in the top of the 10th inning. Nebraska got one run back in the bottom of the inning and had the tying and winning runs on base for Stokes and Knighten before Carly Hoover closed out the win. The 10-inning loss to LSU continued a recent trend of heartbreaking extra-inning losses in the NCAA Tournament for Nebraska. In 2013, all three of the Huskers postseason losses came in extra innings: 4-3 (11) at Oregon in the NCAA Super Regional; 4-3 (8) vs. Washington in the WCWS; and 9-8 (15) vs. Florida in the WCWS. In 2014, Nebraska lost the opening game of its NCAA Super Regional at Alabama, 6-5 in 12 innings. Five of Nebraska s last eight NCAA Tournament losses have come in extra innings - all to national seeds. Going back further, seven of the Huskers last 11 postseason losses have been extra-inning defeats, including five losses that lasted 10 innings or longer.
