DAY 1 DUBA PLAINS CAMP OKAVANGO DELTA Beverly Joubert Duba Plains Camp will be waiting for you once your flight lands at the Maun Airport in Botswana. Board a bush flight that will take you into the Northern Okavango. While the Okavango Delta is world renowned for its winding channels and water adapted wildlife, it is a place of incredible diversity, and this region of the ecosystem happens to be a dynamic savanna where plains game can be seen in abundance. Duba Plains Camp s new design is meant to allow it to blend seamlessly into the surrounding foliage. Great Plains Conservation, which owns and operates this camp is dedicated to sustainability and tourism that benefits local animal and human populations. Duba Plains Camp is a fully integrated community empowerment project on land leased directly from five local communities, who in turn receive all of the lease revenue. Here, you will have the opportunity to view wildlife in the care of a group of highly skilled conservation-minded people, who genuinely look forward to showing you a place they love. Wifi

DAY 2 DUBA PLAINS CAMP OKAVANGO DELTA Head out this morning for a traditional driving safari. Often compared to the Maasai Mara, Duba Plains is home to high densities of wildlife. Both a profusion of plains game and predators call it home. You ll no doubt encounter the large herds of buffalo who like to graze on the tall grasses. Although they are herbivores, buffalo are notoriously tough. With large horns and a tendency to charge when danger is near, they are not animals that can be considered easy prey. Despite these characteristics, the local Tsaro pride of lions are renowned for hunting buffalo. You and your guide can embark on a quest to see some of these lions in action as they stalk their prey with coordinated skill, waiting for the key time to strike in unison when the herds least expect it. Wifi Beverly Joubert

DAY 3 DUBA PLAINS CAMP OKAVANGO DELTA Beverly Joubert Another full day of wildlife viewing around Duba Plains. Early morning and late afternoon/early evening game drives in an open 4 4 vehicle are available as well as wildlife viewing from the water when levels permit. Desert & Delta There are several unique Kalahari species that can be sighted around Duba Plains including aardwolf and pangolins. Aardwolfs are a member of the hyena family, but are insect eaters, using their long sticky tongue to capture termites. Pangolins are the most trafficked animal in the world, making them highly endangered. Their distinct keratin scales are prized for their use in traditional medicine and crafts. Wifi

DAY 4 NXABEGA OKAVANGO TENTED CAMP OKAVANGO DELTA Depart in the morning for Nxabega Tented Camp. Nxabega is located in the heart of the Okavango Delta one of Africa s most complex and awe-inspiring natural environments. The Delta is an intricate maze of azure waterways and lagoons dotted with a patchwork of grassland islands where some of the densest wildlife populations in the world can be found. Unique as one of the world s few inland deltas, the Okavango s calm waters and lush indigenous forests offer a safe haven for the innumerable birds and wildlife species that call it home. At Nxabega you will find a serene, luxurious camp that represents the best of the Okavango s wild environments: forest woodlands and floodplains. The camp was refurbished in 2016, with its living and dining areas constructed from local timber, reed, and thatch, as well as burnished teak floors and a steeply pitched roof to frame the space. Spacious tents are tucked under a canopy of massive ebony trees with private porches gazing out onto the marshlands and floodplains of the Delta. Sundowners Alcohol and Beverages &beyond

DAY 5 NXABEGA OKAVANGO TENTED CAMP OKAVANGO DELTA &beyond Begin your morning discussing wildlife viewing options with your guide over a fresh cup of coffee. Looking to find large herds of elephants? Hoping to catch a glimpse of some hippos? Your guide knows the best locations to view these animals. He can take you by boat along the shores of a lagoon to observe elephants bathing, or further into the network of channels to spot hippo snouts rising above the water. Embark on a drive into the bush with your guide to get a sense of the incredible species diversity that exists in this small piece of Eden. Lion, cheetah, leopard, and African wild dogs share the floodplains with large herds of elephant, zebra, and buffalo. There is a variety of aquatic adapted wildlife including the elegant red lechwe and the shy sititunga. Sundowners Alcohol and Beverages

DAY 6 NXABEGA OKAVANGO TENTED CAMP OKAVANGO DELTA One of the best ways to see the wildlife in this area of the Okavango is down at water level in a mokoro. These canoes were traditionally made by digging out the truck of a large, straight ebony tree. The canoe is propelled through shallow water by standing in the stern and pushing with a pole. On your first mokoro ride, take a seat and watch the Okavango drift by. We ll provide a local poler to help you slide quietly through the papyrus channels of the Okavango, being transported along the waters just like the local bushmen of Botswana. On the water, you ll have the opportunity to watch for small creatures, as well as the larger plains game that inhabit this area. With luck, you ll see some elephants in the water. Sundowners Alcohol and Beverages &beyond

DAY 7 BAINES CAMP OKAVANGO DELTA Morning bush flight to the Baines Camp bush strip. You ll be on the Boro River bordering Moremi Game Reserve. Baines Camp is named after the 19th century explorer and painter, Thomas Baines. During the afternoon, head out for a mokoro safari out on the waters. Enjoy a night game drive after dinner with the opportunity to view nocturnal animals one wouldn t see during the day. During your stay here, your bed can be wheeled out onto the private wooden deck for a night under the stars. Sleep on a balcony overlooking the shimmering waters of the Boro River where hippo can often be spotted and always heard. Spa Treatments Available Sanctuary Retreats

DAY 8 BAINE S CAMP OKAVANGO DELTA Sanctuary Retreats Find out how to track and follow even the most elusive of animals in the Okavango on a walking safari. Baines Camp is set in a private concession, which means there is an opportunity to get very close on foot in perfect safety with an expert guide. This is an exciting activity and provides a different perspective for safari travelers who have only ever watched wildlife from a safari vehicle. On foot, you can learn about these creatures by walking in their footsteps and seeing the bush at their level. At Baines Camp, traditional Land Cruiser wildlife viewing, seasonal night drives, and boat safaris are all available as well. Sundowners Spa Treatments Available

DAY 9 BAINES CAMP OKAVANGO DELTA Today you ll explore Africa from an elephant s perspective. Meet and interact with Jabu, Thembi, and Morula, a trio of semi-habituated orphaned elephants, while walking in their gigantic footsteps. Doug and Sandy Graves adopted these three elephants, rescuing them from culling operations that left them as orphans. Their Living with Elephants Foundation is dedicated to creating harmonious relationships between people and elephants through education and research. The elephants spend each dawn to dusk out in the bush wandering, foraging, bathing, and living the life of an elephant. You ll be along for the walk. The elephants forage peacefully for food, stripping leaves from branches and shaking trees to bring down nuts. When it s available, the elephants have great fun in the mud. It helps them stay cool and keep insects at bay. Spa Treatments Available Today you ll have chances to touch and observe the elephants, while you learn about them and their surrounding habitat. This might be the only opportunity you ever have to touch the skin of an elephant, feel what a living tusk feels like, or see inside the mouth and ears of an elephant. At the end of the morning, you ll have a picnic lunch under the shade of a grove of sausage trees. Table service for the humans is included, with the elephants chomping on a special mixture of grains. Sanctuary Retreats

DAY 10 CHIEF S CAMP OKAVANGO DELTA Sanctuary Retreats Board a bush flight this morning deeper into Chief s Island to enjoy some of the best wildlife viewing in southern Africa. High wildlife and low human densities means that you are in for some very special experiences. Chief s Island is the largest island in the Delta. It was the traditional hunting grounds for Chief Moremi. The entire area around Chief s Camp is very close to the permanent swamps at the base of the Okavango Panhandle. Floods in this area are more regular and predictable than they are lower down in the Delta, allowing for better year round wildlife viewing. The view from Chief s Camp is the quintessential Delta landscape. Lechwe are common in the flooded areas when the water is high. Up on dry land, the focus here is firmly on wildlife viewing. There are excellent opportunities for sightings of lion, cheetah, and leopard. There is a thriving cheetah population on the island, as the slightly raised termite mounds and raised palm islands offer ideal look out points for them. Spotted hyena are successful carnivores on the island, with young pups sometimes joining the family on the hunt. You can also see wild dogs in the flood plains. This is predator country supported by healthy populations of plains game. Spa Treatments Available

DAY 11 CHIEF S CAMP OKAVANGO DELTA The Botswana government, and some of its private partners, have been shepherding the return of white and black rhinos onto Chief s Island and into other areas of the Okavango Delta. The Rhinos Without Borders program recently moved ten rhinos out of poaching hot spots in South Africa and relocated them into areas in Botswana where they will be well protected. Botswana is one of the few countries in Africa that protects its wildlife with its military, not just rangers. The plan is to use these translocated rhinos as a breeding nucleus on land that is safe. Odds favor Chief s Island as a location for good rhino sightings in Botswana. Once the Okavango flood waters arrive on Chief s Island, mokoro safaris are quite spectacular. At the right time of the year, more than half of the road network surrounding Chief s Camp becomes covered in water, and mokoro s take the place of cars as a means to traverse the area. More land under water means even more concentrated wildlife on the remaining dry land. Truly, there are so many good sighting opportunities that sometimes you ll have to choose whether to focus on some passing rhino, a leopard stashing a kill up a tree, or lions hunting. Spa Treatments Available Beverly Joubert

DAY 12 CHIEF S CAMP OKAVANGO DELTA Sanctuary Retreats The quality of guiding at Chief s Camp is impressive. This is one of our favorite places on earth. Explore the wilderness with the Chief s Island guides and you will surely begin to see the natural world through new eyes. Chief s Camp exemplifies Botswana s approach to conservation tourism; give visitors access to the wilderness with very few other humans, then allow the wildlife to prosper and multiply. Spa Treatments Available
