Sacred Heart leads the all-time series, 16-7 after a 60-45 win at home earlier this season. SHU and Monmouth have met four times in the postseason, splitting all four meetings. SHU knocked out Monmouth in last season s semifinals and the 2007 semifinal as well, both at home. The Hawks snapped a seven-game Sacred Heart winning streak in the series by knocking the Pioneers in the 2008 quarterfinals at LIU and won a semifinal match-up at Wagner in 2004. The Pioneers are 9-2 against the Hawks at home and 7-3 on the road in West Long Branch, NJ. SHU has won four-straight over the Hawks on the road and eight-straight at home in the Pitt Center. SHU in the Northeast Conference... Sacred Heart is in its 11th season of play in the Northeast Conference and has posted a 150-47 conference record over that span. The Pioneers are coming off their second NEC Championship along with a 21-0 run through the league last season. SHU won their first championship during the 2005-06 season, running off a 26-5 record and 16-2 NEC mark. SHU has never finished lower then tied for third in the final league standings. Head Coach Swanson is the leader in all-time NEC wins at 150 victories. The Coaches... Ed Swanson (SHU 89) is in his 20th season as head coach at his alma mater. Swanson posts a 341-230 record in his career at Sacred Heart. His teams have a 215-111 record since joining the Division I ranks in 1999-00. Swanson was inducted in to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009 and is the program s longest tenured coach and all-time leader in coaching wins (341). He has been named the NEC Coach of the Year three times and is the alltime leader in regular season NEC wins (150). Stephanie Gaitley (Villanova 82) is in her second season on the bench at Monmouth University after spending the previous six years at Long Island University. Gaitley has guided the Hawks to a 33-26 record in her two seasons and racked up a 95-82 mark in her six seasons at LIU. The Hawks are fourth in the league in scoring defense allowing 58.3 points per game. Last Meeting with Monmouth... Sophomore Callan Taylor led four players in double figures with 16 points as Sacred Heart posted a 60-45 win over Monmouth at home on January 4th. Defensively, the Pioneers forced 25 Hawk turnovers and held Monmouth to just 45 points. SHU had 20 points off turnovers and shot 46.9% (23-49) from the field in the win. Senior forward Lindsey Gibson hit five-of-six from the field for a career high 10 points in the win. Monmouth s Alysha Womack scored the game s first three points for the Hawks but Sacred Heart used an 11-0 scoring run to take back the lead for good. SHU extended its lead to 15-7 after an Alexis Campbell jumper with 12:40 to go and used a MU scoring drought that lasted over eight minutes to push their lead to 23-15. The Pioneers led 28-18 at the half, paced by nine points from junior Alisa Apo. Sacred Heart s lead dipped below double digits just once in the second half as Taylor scored 11 of her game-high 16 in the second stanza. The Hawks cut the lead to 30-22 in the opening minutes but back-to-back three s from Taylor and junior Maggie Cosgrove pushed the Pioneer lead to 44-26 with 10 minutes to go. A pair of Taylor free throws and Cosgrove s fourth three of the night pushed the SHU lead to its high water mark of 22, 60-38, with 3:18 left as the Pioneers cruised home with the win. Cosgrove finished four-of-six behind the arc on her way to 14 points while Apo finished with 12 on the night. The Hawks out rebounded the Pioneers, 37-28, but shot just 33.3% (16-48) in the loss. Sacred Heart sophomore Callan Taylor posted her 15th double double of the season scoring 18 points with 11 rebounds to help guide the Pioneers past Fairleigh Dickinson, 55-33, Thursday night to snap a four-game Northeast Conference losing streak. The Pioneers put together a strong defensive effort, allowing a season-low 33 points in holding the Knights to just 26.0% (13-50) shooting. FDU turned the ball over 24 times, leading to 25 Pioneer points. Taylor s 18 point night came on sixof-11 shooting and four-of-six from behind the arc, her best showing from downtown since a five-of-six night against Harvard back in November. Leading 15-14 at the 9:34 mark, Sacred Heart began to pull away ending the half outscoring FDU 13-4. A three from Taylor at 3:37 put SHU up eight and Alisa Apo closed the half with a runner in the lane to send her team into the locker room up 28-18. Fairleigh Dickinson could only manage to cut the Pioneer lead to 11, 37-26, as Jenna Strich hit their only three of the night with 12:51 on the clock in the second half. SHU pulled away and doubled their lead to 22 over the next five minutes as a pair of Taylor three s and a fast-break lay-up from senior Lindsey Gibson helped fuel a 14-3 run for a 51-29 lead. A pair of Apo free throws gave the Pioneers their biggest lead of the night at 24, 53-29, and SHU cruised home for the win. In addition to Taylor s double dip, Apo finished with 11 points, five assists and four rebounds. The Pioneers shot 34.4% (21-61) but used 14 offensive rebounds for 13 second chance points en route to the win. NEC Playoff Picture... The defending champion Pioneers are locked into the #3 seed in next week s NEC Tournament being held at Saint Francis (PA) in Loretto, PA. SHU s first round opponent is still to be decided but the Pioneers will face Central Connecticut State if the Blue Devils defeat St. Francis (NY) on Saturday. If CCSU falters, Sacred Heart could still face the Blue Devils or possibly Wagner or Mount St. Mary s depending on other results and tie-breaker scenarios. The top seed in the field will be Robert Morris followed by Long Island in the #2 spot. Only Monmouth and the host Red Flash can occupy the #4 and #5 seeds and will be determined by Saturday s results. CCSU has clinched and can be the sixth, seventh or eighth seed depending on tie-breakers. There are four teams left to fill the remaining two spots as Mount St. Mary s (6-11) and Wagner (6-11) control their own destiny needing just a win to get in. Both Quinnipiac (6-11) and Fairleigh Dickinson (5-12) need to win and get help to make the field. The only teams eliminated are St. Francis-NY (1-16) and Bryant (10-7), who is ineligible for postseason play until the 2012-13 season. Looking for Another 20 Wins... Sacred Heart enters the 2009-10 regular season finale just one win away of securing their fifth 20- win season in the last seven years and fourth in the last five. The Pioneers are currently riding a streak of 10-straight winning seasons and 14-straight years with a.500 record or better. The last losing season came in 1994-95, an 11-16 finish. Sacred Heart also extended their streak to nine-straight seasons with at least 18 wins, the longest active streak in the Northeast Conference. Under head coach Ed Swanson, the Pioneers have won 18 or more games 11 times in his 20 seasons on the bench. Since joining the NEC in 1999-00, Sacred Heart has never missed a postseason, clinching a berth in the league tournament in each of their 11 seasons in the league. Pioneers End NEC Slide... The Pioneers put a stop to their firstever four-game NEC losing streak on Thursday night with a 55-33 win over the FDU Knights. After clinching an NEC Tournament berth with their win at Wagner, the Pioneers went 2-4 in their next six games and lost four-straight league contests, a first in program history. It had been six season since Sacred Heart saw a threegame conference losing streak, dropping three-straight during the 2003-04 season when they lost to Saint Francis (PA), Robert Morris and Long Island, all on the road. The Pioneers have had

only one other three-game conference slide, during the 1999-00 season when they fell to Wagner at home and Mount St. Mary s and UMBC on the road. Taylor Sets Double Double Mark... Forward Callan Taylor has 15 double doubles on the year, setting a new Sacred Heart Division I record for a season. The previous record was set by Jasmine Walker in 2006-07 at 13. She currently ranks 16th among NCAA leaders and tops in the NEC in double doubles. She is seventh in the NEC in scoring (15.1 ppg) and leads the conference in rebounding, averaging 9.5 rebounds per game. Taylor would be the first Pioneer to ever lead the NEC in rebounding. She is two rebounds away from 500 for her career. Cosgrove & Pioneers Filling it up from Behind the Arc... Junior Maggie Cosgrove went into the Robert Morris game leading the nation in three-point shooting percentage, but has dropped to sixth in the current rankings. On the season, she is making 46.5% (73-157). The Pioneers as a team are eighth in the NCAA from behind the arc, hitting 38.4% (165-430) on the year. Cosgrove Claims Another SHU 3-pt Record... Junior guard Maggie Cosgrove set her second three-point shooting record this season with 73 three s and counting on the year. She breaks the mark of 69 that she tied last season with former Pioneer Lisa Moray. Moray s 69 threes came during the 2006-07 season. Just 84 games into her Sacred Heart career, Cosgrove set the new school record for career three-point field goals earlier this season. Cosgrove buried four-of-five from behind the arc at Wagner to pass Ashley Kohl on the SHU all-time list. Kohl s set the previous mark of 173 from 2000 through 2004. Cosgrove is at 190 career three s and counting. Her career three-point percentage of 42.4% is currently tops all-time at Sacred Heart. Apo Reaches 1,000 Career Points... Sacred Heart junior Alisa Apo became the 14th Pioneer in school history to reach 1,000 points for her career. Apo s 15 point game against Manhattan put the junior co-captain over the century mark in her 68th career game, making her the second fastest player to 1,000 points in school history. The fastest Pioneer to 1,000 points was all-time leading scorer Amanda Pape (2003-07) who reached the mark in her 66th career game. Apo sits fifth on the all-time list with 1,371 career points. Rookie Kiley Evans a Four-time NEC Rookie of the Week... SHU freshman Kiley Evans has earned four Choice Hotels NEC Player of the Week awards this season. Evans joined teammates Callan Taylor (2008-09) and Alisa Apo (2007-08) and former Pioneer Nicolle Rubino (2002-03) in earning four NEC Rookie awards during their freshman seasons. Taylor, Apo, Pape and Rubino all ended their freshman campaigns by earning spots on the NEC All-Rookie team. Apo a Three Time NEC Weekly Award Winner... Junior Alisa Apo has won three Choice Hotels NEC Player of the Week Awards this year. Apo earned her third award after averaging 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in wins at Mount and Wagner to share the nod with Saint Francis (PA) s Allison Daly. Her first award this came on Nov. 30th after leading the Pioneers to wins over Stony Brook, where she scored a season-high 28 points. Her second nod came on Jan. 4th, after averaging 19.7 points, 6.7 assists, and 4.7 rebounds over Sacred Heart s final three non-conference games. Apo won the award three times last season on her way to earning NEC Player of the Year honors. Taylor Named NEC Player of the Week... Sophomore Callan Taylor was named the Choice Hotels NEC Player of the week on Dec. 14th after turning in two double-doubles to help Sacred Heart to a pair of wins over Saint Peter s and Fairfield. Taylor poured in a career-high 32 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to sink Saint Peter s. On the way to producing what was the highest single-game scoring total the NEC has seen to that point of the season, she made 12 of 16 field goal attempts in the 61-55 win. Taylor put up 10 points and 10 rebounds in a 19-point victory at cross-town rival Fairfield. Sacred Heart Streaks Stopped... The Pioneers had their 27-game Northeast Conference streak snapped with the loss to Central Connecticut at home. The Pioneers also owned a streak of 24- straight regular season NEC wins and 16-straight home wins against NEC foes end on Thursday. SHU s streak of 27-straight ranks as the fourth longest streak in Northeast Conference history. Their previous loss to an NEC team came falling to Monmouth in the opening round of the 2008 NEC Tournament, 75-70. Their last previous regular season loss in the NEC came in the 2007-08 season finale to Robert Morris, 66-52. Consecutive wins against NEC teams (Overall counting NEC Tournament Games) 1. Swanson a New England Hall of Famer... Head coach Ed Swanson was selected for induction into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame this past fall. Swanson was inducted on October 9th in a ceremony at Mohegan Sun. The New England Basketball Hall of Fame is anchored at the Institute for International Sport at the University of Rhode Island and 2009 marked the fifth induction ceremony in the organization s history. Swanson was joined by the University of Vermont s Sharon Dawley as the only two coaches being inducted in the intercollegiate women s basketball coaching category. Program History... This is the 36th season of Pioneer women s basketball. Sacred Heart s first year of competition was the 1974-75 season under head coach Mickey Stratton. SHU carries an overall record of 446 wins and 474 losses for a.485 winning percentage. SHU joined the Division I ranks in the 1999-2000 season as a member of the Northeast Conference, making this the 11th season at the Division I level. SHU has posted a 215-111 Division I record.

Head Coach Ed Swanson - 20th Year, 341-230 Ed Swanson took the reins of the Sacred Heart University women s basketball program in 1990 and has built the Pioneers into one of the top teams in the Northeast Conference and throughout the Northeast. Swanson s career has seen the veteran coach eclipse the 300 career victories mark on the road to a pair of NEC Championships and earned him the honor of being inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame this fall. Beginning his 20th season on the Sacred Heart bench, Swanson has built the Pioneers into one of the top-teams year in and year out in the NEC and is coming off a season where he led SHU to a perfect run through the league and the program s second conference title in the last four years. The Pioneers posted just the third perfect 18-0 mark in NEC history last year earning the head coach his third NEC Coach of the Year award. Over the past 14 seasons, the Pioneers have posted at least a.500 record or better under Swanson, a run that has included five 20 win seasons. Last season s magical run included a pair of coaching milestones as Swanson moved past former Mount St. Mary s head coach Bill Sheahan (124) in all-time Northeast Conference wins at 138 and counting while also eclipsing the 300 win plateau in career victories. In their 10 years in the Northeast Conference, Swanson s Pioneers have never missed the playoffs and have never finished lower then third in the final league standings. He has guided Sacred Heart to a 196-102 record since joining the Division I ranks in 1999-00. After a 0-5 start to the 2008-09 season, Swanson s Pioneers got their season on track and finished the year with 25-8 record including 21-straight wins, a school record and mark that ranked second in the country. After a perfect run through the NEC schedule, the Pioneers finished off their amazing season by capturing their second league title and trip to the NCAA Tournament in the last four years. The 2005-06 season was a magical run for Swanson and his program as the Pioneers made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance after capturing the NEC Championship in just their seventh season at the Division I level. Swanson led the Pioneers to a school record 26-5 record along with a then record mark of 16 NEC wins while he himself earned his 250th career victory. He has guided the Pioneers to five 20 win seasons including four in the last six years. Swanson s Pioneers enter this season riding a streak of nine-straight winning seasons and eight-straight seasons with at least 18. Under his leadership, the Pioneers have become one of the toughest teams on their home court, the William H. Pitt Center. Since the opening of the Pitt Center in 1997, his Sacred Heart teams have won 84% (138-27) of their home games including a perfect 15-0 in 2005-06 and 14-0 in 2003-04. Between 2002 and 2004, the Pioneers put together a string of 19-straight regular season wins at home in the Pitt Center. Their.836 winning percentage at home ranks the Pitt Center nationally as one the toughest arenas for visiting teams to earn a win. Since joining the Northeast Conference in 1999-00, the Pioneers have had a pair of Northeast Conference Player of the Year and three NEC Rookie of the Year award winners. Last season, Alisa Apo became just the second player in conference history to win the league s top-player award after earning the rookie of the year award the previous season. SHU center Kaitlin Sowinski joined former Pioneer Amanda Pape with back-to-back AllNEC first team awards. Pape, the program s all-time leading scorer, was named both the NEC s Player and Rookie of the Year while leading the Pioneers to their first-ever league title. Apo, Pape and Nicolle Rubino all earned Rookie of the Year honors under Swanson s guidance. Swanson has elevated the program to its current high state through a combination of shrewd recruiting, coaching acumen, fine assistant coaches and players who understand the team concept. The evidence is there for all to see. In the past 14 seasons, the Pioneers have assembled a 288-148 (.661) record, but they have been even more formidable against conference opponents during that span, with a 20663 (.766) mark. After directing the Pioneers to a 20-7 record the program s first 20-win season in 1995-96, Swanson was voted Coach of the Year in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s (WBCA) District I. He was runner-up for NEC Coach of the Year in 1999-2000, when Sacred Heart s inaugural Division I team produced a 14-14 record and tied for third (11-7) during the conference s regular season. Basketball has always been an integral part of Swanson s life. From his days as a two-time captain at Kolbe Cathedral High School in Bridgeport, to the transition of elevating the Pioneers to the Division I level, to directing his two-week long NIKE Girls Basketball Camp at Sacred Heart each summer, Swanson has demonstrated a passion for the game exceeded by few.
