Tough Day Results Golf News This year s Tough Day tournament was quite a doozey. We had a record high field with 45 teams competing this year. The front nine was set up very easy and benign while the back nine was tricked out with longer tee boxes and unthinkable hole locations. Our Gross Champions this year went to the team of Rodes Bowers and James Kyles who a fired a best ball score of 69! The field was split into two flights, the first flight was won by Tom Coughlin and Richard Ryan with a team net score of 63.75. In the second flight, the team of Alex Thompson and Ian Reagan took home first place with a team net score of 69.55. Congratulations to our winners and we appreciate everyone who came out to play! Golf News Gwinnett Cup Results On Friday November 16th we hosted the annual Gwinnett Cup here at Berkeley Hills. The Gwinnett Cup consists of ourselves, Summit Chase, and Northwood golf clubs. Northwood was not able to field a team for this year s competition unfortunately. The competition consists of 20 players from each club each counting and contributing their own score to the team s total. Berkeley Hills came out victorious winning in a landslide victory 1615 to 1675! Congratulations to Berkeley Hills member Stephen Kinsel for shooting the low round of the day, a one under par 71. Congratulations to all the Berkeley Hills members who participated in such a fun event! Santa Claus Open We kick December off with the annual Santa Claus Open Saturday December 15th. The format is 4 person teams playing a team scramble, we will get started with a 10 AM shotgun start. This is our biggest and best tournament of the year! For those that are not able to participate you can still donate a unwrapped new toy to Gwinnett County Family Services for children in need this Holiday season. We look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday! From the Golf Shop As we have done in years past, during the Santa Claus Open we will have every item in the golf shop on sale for a one day only 20% off! We will also have sales rack out in the hallway and those sale racks will stay up through the month of December. This is a great time to get that golf themed gift for Mom or Dad! Superintendent News December 2018 Usually every December is when we begin to monitor the weather to decide when it is time to cover greens. Over the past 12 years, we have learned a lot about when to cover. At the beginning we used to cover each day it was going to be cold, but now that the greens have aged, I feel they can handle the weather much better than initially expected. We will always let the greens get frosted up first. This helps in the hardening off effect. We now look at daytime temperatures, besides only looking at nighttime temperatures. For example, if the daytime temperatures are sunny and hi of 55 or more and that night may get down to 26, we more than likely will not cover, but if the daytime temperature mid 40 s or lower and that night is 28, we will cover. What I am trying to judge is the length of frozen time on the grass. Once we get our first frost, I begin to leave messages on the Course Conditions Hotline, which is 770-448-2008 ext. 3333. On that message I will say if there is a delay and if we will be covering greens that afternoon. If the day comes for us to cover greens, we begin no later than 4:00 on #1 and #10. If the Golf Shop feels that not many people will be out to play due to the weather, they will allow us to cover earlier. The longer the grass is under the sun with the covers on it, the better chance of survival thru the winter becomes. If you have any questions, please ask. Chris Purvis Weather Hotline It s that time of year again with cold chilly nights. If you are wondering what the course conditions are like please call the weather hotline at 770-448-2008 ext. 3333 to check the course status. Superintendent Chris Purvis will update as the weather dictates.
