Winthrop shot an impressive 52.5 percent for the game and owned a 43-25 advantage in points in the paint. Campbell struggled to a 35.1 shooting percentage, but did win the rebounding battle 38-33. The loss was the Chants third straight after opening the Big South at 4-0. AJ Jordan led Coastal in scoring for the ninth time this season with 10 points. It was her 13th 10-plus point game of the campaign. Coastal got into foul trouble early as starting guards Angelica Henry and Karsen Sims picked up two fouls in the first 10 minutes of play. Winthrop s Dequesha McClanahan and Erica Williams co-led all scorers with 21 points each. Coastal Carolina vs. Presbyterian College Thursday s meeting marks the 24th in the all-time series between the Coastal Carolina and Presbyterian College. The Chanticleers own a 15-9 lead in the series; however, the Blue Hose have won each of the last three meetings. The teams are 5-5 against each other since Presbyterian joined the Big South for the 2008-09 season. Coastal was defeated in its last trip to Clinton by a 50-30 final. Starting Five Coastal Carolina has used nine different starting lineups this season with varying levels of success. The Chants most frequent and most successful lineup featuring Angelica Henry, AJ Jordan, Karsen Sims, Alexx Puckett and Katelyn Connor is 3-2. The opening day lineup of Henry, Jordan, Carlton, Puckett and Connor has been used three times and has produced 2-1 record. The lineup of Henry, Jordan, Carlton, Megan Pittman and Connor has appeared twice, winning both contests. Coastal s final winning lineup features Sims, Jordan, Kayla Cook, Puckett and Pittman lasted one game and produced a victory. Jordan is the only Chanticleer to start each game this season. She started 45 straight contests dating back to the first game of last season. 70 is the Magic Number The number 70 is on the minds of the Chanticleers each time they take the floor this season. The number represents the amount of points needed to be scored to nearly assure victory. Coastal is 6-2, including 3-0 in Big South action, when scoring 70-plus points this season. CCU s only defeats when scoring 70-plus were to non-conference opponents Drake (74-90) and Furman (72-79). Conversely, the Chants are 2-6 when failing to reach the 70-point plateau. 1 is One of Three Junior shooting guard AJ Jordan, who wears number one, is one of three players in the Big South to have made 100- plus field goals and pull down 100-plus rebounds. Jordan leads the conference with 115 made field goals and ranks 10th with 112 total rebounds. Liberty s Ashley Rininger has made 107 field goals and recorded 162 rebounds, while two-time defending Big South Player of the Year Dequesha McClanahan of Winthrop has 101 field goals and 118 rebounds. Leading The Conference Coastal Carolina is pacing the Big South Conference in points per game with a 72.6 clip in all games and a 71.6 average in conference only games. Conversely, the 2012-13 Chants ranked ninth-best in the league averaging just 57.0 points per game. Coastal s points surge can easily be traced back to the team s field goal percentage from the floor and from beyond the arc. Coastal ranks third in the Big South in field goals with a 40.7 percentage and tops in 3-point percentage at 35.9. Last season s team closed the year shooting 37.4 percent overall and 24.4 percent from deep. The Chants co-lead the league overall with 9.69 steals per game. Getting Buckets Shooting guard AJ Jordan has got her buckets this season -- 115 of them to be exact through the first 16 games of the season. She is averaging 16.7 points per game to rank third-best in the Big South. Her 115 total made field goals leads the league, while her 48.5 shooting percentage ranks highest amongst the league s guards. Jordan made 121 field goals all of last season as she averaged 9.6 points per outing. She has 267 total points this season and is on pace to crack CCU s single season top-10 points scored list. Controlling The Boards The Chanticleers have won the rebounding battle in 11 of their first 16 games. Coastal is averaging 44.0 boards per game this season, while only allowing its opponents to collect 40.1 per outing. CCU s +3.9 rebounding margin ranks third in the Big South and 93rd-best of the 343 institutions in NCAA Division I. Coastal collected a season-high 55 rebounds in its win over Brevard and has recorded 50-plus rebounds five times. The Chants are 8-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play when winning the rebounding battle. Past The Halfway Point Coastal has eclipsed the halfway point of its 29 game regular season schedule. Through 16 games, the Chanticleers own an 8-8 overall record and a 4-3 mark in Big South play. WHAT IS A CHANTICLEER? The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina University when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time. In addition, Coastal averages 44.4 rebounds per game, an improvement of 3.8 over the first 16 games of last season. Three Chanticleers are averaging 10-plus points per game -- AJ Jordan (16.7), Angelica Henry (12.8) and Alexx Puckett (11.5). Long-Range Chants Coastal Carolina has developed into a team that is not to be left open beyond the arc as the Chanticleers shoot a Big South best 35.9 percent from 3-point land and average 5.6 3-pointers per game. Coastal s 35.9 clip from beyond the arc ranks 27th-best in the NCAA. Four Chants - Angelica Henry (23), Megan Pittman (17), Karsen Sims (21) and Kayla Cook (11) - have made 10-plus treys this season. Coastal has thrice connected on 10-plus 3-pointers in a game -- notching 11 vs. Virginia Intermont, 10 at Longwood and 12 vs. Liberty. Freshman Karsen Sims has proven to be Coastal s go-to 3-pointer shooter in the last three games as each of her 21 points have come by way of the three ball. Jordan Named Co-Big South Player of the Week Coastal Carolina shooting guard AJ Jordan was named the co-big South Player of the Week along with Gardner-Webb s Catrina Green for games played Dec. 24-Jan. 5. The weekly honor is the first in Jordan s career and the second by a Chanticleer this season as Alexx Puckett picked up the award on Dec. 9. In addition to the league honor, Jordan was named the Big South Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness. com. Jordan turned in the best four-game stretch of her career in leading Coastal to a 3-1 conference record. She averaged 16.3 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, while also dishing out seven assists and recording five steals. The junior started the stretch with 13 points and six rebounds as Coastal set a school record with a 30-point win at Longwood. She then led the Chanticleers to a come-from-behind victory at Radford with a 23-point, 13-rebound double-double. The Coalfield, Tenn., native followed that performance with 19 points and 15 rebounds, including 13 on the defensive end, in a victory over High Point. She closed the four-games in eight days stretch with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds against Liberty. Home Court Advantage The HTC Center, which opened in 2012, has been kind to the Chanticleers. Coastal is 15-9 at home since playing the inaugural game on Nov. 12, 2012. Winthrop s Dequesha McClanahan, the two-time defending Big South Conference Player of the Year, and freshman Erica Williams co-led all scorers with 21 points each. Redshirt junior Samiya Wright added 16, including 15 in the first half, while Pamela Decheva scored 11 for the visiting Eagles. Coastal was led offensively by AJ Jordan s 10 points. The junior also recorded a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman Karsen Sims and redshirt freshman Megan Pittman each scored nine points on the night. The win was the third in a row for the Eagles who moved to a Big South-best 12-4 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Coastal falls to 8-8 on the year and 4-3 against league opponents. The teams entered the first media timeout with Winthrop holding a 6-5 lead; however, the Eagles would reel off 17 of the next 24 points to take a 23-12 advantage with 7:18 remaining before the half. Coastal then countered with a 9-0 run of its own, making the score 26-21 in the visitor s favor. Pittman and Katelyn Connor each made one at the charity stripe to start the scoring run. Kayla Cook then used a spin move to the baseline for an open layup and Sims connected on a triple from the wing. Alexx Puckett capped the run with a jumper from the free-throw line off a Cook assist. Winthrop s Wright broke the CCU momentum with a 20-foot jumper following Puckett s score. Sims answered with a three on Coastal s next possession, cutting the Eagle lead to 28-24 with 2:11 showing on the clock. However, the Chants would get no closer as Winthrop used four points from Wright and two from McClanahan to close the half on a 6-0 run and take a 34-24 lead into the intermission. The Eagles opened the second half on a 20-11 run, taking a 19 point lead with 13:18 to play in the contest. CHANTICLEERS WINNING STREAK HALTED BY BLUE HOSE CONWAY Presbyterian College s low post duo of Mariah Pietrowski and Shonda Burnside took advantage of their size and ability to score a combined 34 points and hand Coastal Carolina a 65-54 loss on Tuesday evening at The HTC Center. Pietrowski scored a game-high 18 points, while Burnside finished with 16. Dria David and Karlee Taylor also scored in double figures for Presbyterian College (14-10, 9-4 Big South). The Blue Hose finished the game shooting 60.5 percent (23-of-38) with 15 of those makes coming from inside the paint. Angelica Henry poured in Coastal s final seven points of the game to finish as the Chants leading scorer with 16 points. Shatia Cole posted double digits in the scoring column with 13 points and led all players with a game-high five steals. The defeat snaps Coastal s (11-13, 6-8 Big South) four-game winning streak and keeps the Chanticleers saddled in seventh in the overall conference standings. Coastal and Presbyterian College exchanged the lead five times in the opening four-plus minutes of the second half before Taylor drilled a trey to put the Blue Hose up 32-30 just after the under-16 media timeout. Henry tied the game at 32 with a runner in the lane, but Burnside and David immediately answered with a layup and 3-pointer, respectively, on Presbyterian College s ensuing two possessions. Connor then brought Coastal back within a point at 37-36 with four straight tallies. After Alexx Puckett made two at the line Burnside connected on a bank shot that sparked a 16-5 Blue Hose run over the next 6:19. A layup by Cole and jumper by Puckett bookended a pair at the line by Presbyterian College s David, but it would not be enough to ignite the Chanticleers. The Blue Hose scored the game s next seven points at the free-throw line to take a game-high 18-point lead with 1:29 to play. Henry scored Coastal s final seven points on a pair of mid-range jumpers and a 3-pointer to provide 65-54 final score. Presbyterian College opened the game on a 7-0 run before the Chants found their first basket of the evening. But as they have over their past several games, the Chanticleers responded with a lengthy scoring streak of their own to take a 14-9 advantage with 11:22 remaining in the half. Five straight points by the Blue Hose s Burnside closed Coastal s advantage to 16-14. The sides exchanged baskets over the next several minutes before Pietrowski scored four in the paint and sank a pair at the line to knot the game at 22-all. Cole answered with a tip-in off a Connor miss and Henry added a layup to give the Chants a 26-22 lead. However, Presbyterian College s Taylor drilled a 3-pointer just before the half, cutting Coastal s halftime lead to 26-25.
