Action for the Pitt-Syracuse showdown can be seen live on ESPN3. History vs. boston college & syracuse: As former members of the Big East, Pitt, Boston College and Syracuse have long histories with each other. Success in both series sways heavily in favor of the Panthers. Pitt leads Boston College 21-1 all-time and is a perfect 8-0 at Fitzgerald Field House against the Eagles. The overall advantage against Syracuse stands at 31-9, including a 12-2 mark at home. Family Night: Friday s 7 p.m. match vs. Boston College has been designated Family Night. With the win (30-23, 30-28, 20-30, 30-22), the Panthers improved to 17-5 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Big East. Azadeh Boroumand finished with 50 assists and 16 digs. Pitt s only loss to Boston College came in 2000 when the Panthers fell 3-2 despite a 21 kill-31 dig performance from Stacey Renick. That is also the only five-set match played in series history. The Panthers are 17-0 in straight sets and 4-0 in four sets. Additionally, the last two meetings between the squads have been decided in four frames. Pitt and Syracuse s last meeting came just last October. The Panthers won that match in three sets, 25-22, 25-16, 25-18 behind 12 kills from both Jessica Wynn and Monica Wignot. Pitt hit.273 as a team compared to.171 for the Orange. Pitt is 20-3 all-time in straight-sets matches against Syracuse. The last time Syracuse came to Pittsburgh, it was 2011 and the Orange went home with a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-22, 25-21). It was a rare win for Syracuse in Fitzgerald Field House. Pitt holds a 12-2 advantage when playing the Orange on its own court, although those losses came in 2007 and 2011. Mechael Guess led the team with a total of 19 kills last weekend at Miami and Florida State. The junior now ranks third on the team in kills for the season with 160 (2.76/set), and first among Panthers in ACC play with 65 (3.25/ set). Her.376 attack percentage in conference action is also a team high among players with more than 10 kills and ranks third in the ACC. Pitt has used five different starting lineups this season, including three different ones during ACC play alone. The Panthers did not vary from the original starting six through their first 12 matches, going 8-4 with Kate Yeazel, Jessica Wynn, Lindsey Zitzke, Jessica Boddy, Jenna Potts and Maria Genitsaridi opening play. Pitt is a combined 3-4 with the other four starting lineups, including one that used Wynn, Mechael Guess, Jenna Jacobson, Potts, Monica Wignot and Genitsaridi in the most recent outing at Florida State on Sunday. The second set seems to be critical to the overall outcome of the match for Pitt this year. The Panthers are 5-3 when winning the second set but just 0-5 when losing it. KeKe Irby s playing time has been somewhat limited in her first season with the Panthers, but the redshirt freshman has been making the most of the action she does see. Earning her first career start against Morehead State on Sept. 21, she finished with a career-best five kills and a.625 attack percentage as well as seven total blocks. Her next two appearances came off the bench at Miami and Florida State where she hit a perfect 1.000 in each match. Irby totaled three kills against the Hurricanes and two more in a single set against the nationally ranked Seminoles. Pitt set a season high with 17.0 total team blocks in their five-set match with Virginia on Oct. 5. Monica Wignot (10 blocks), Mechael Guess (6), Jenna Potts (6), Casey Durham (4) and Kate Yeazel (4) led the team individually against the Cavaliers. One night earlier, the Panthers totaled 10 blocks against Virginia Tech, its highest three-set total since posting 11.5 against Northeastern on Sept. 7. Monica Wignot s 10 blocks against Virginia made her the second Panther to reach double digits this season (Jenna Potts totaled 10 at UConn). Wignot s total was also the second of her career in double figures and was one shy of her career best. The senior tallied 11 blocks at DePaul on Oct. 28, 2012. Mechael Guess was named the Pitt Athlete of the Week on Oct. 7. The junior finished with a career-high 21 kills and six blocks against Virginia to help her to the honor. Guess has hit double-figure kills in 12 of her last 15 matches. She entered the season with just nine double-digit kills totals in her first two seasons combined at Pitt. Lindsey Zitke has posted 14 service aces (0.70/set) during ACC play, including a season-best four against both Georgia Tech and Virginia. No other Panther has more than six aces in all of conference action. Zitzke currently leads the team in aces for the entire season at 29 (0.40/set). Prior to last weekend, Pitt was 7-1 in threeset matches this season. The Panthers then dropped back-to-back straight-set contests to Miami and No. 21 Florida State, their first defeats in three since Aug. 31 against Idaho State. Pitt is 8-1 this fall in matches when it outblocks its opponent. The only loss came just last Saturday against Virginia when the Panthers lost in five sets despite winning 17.0 to 12.0 in the blocks department. Pitt is just 2-7 when it records fewer total team blocks than its foe. When Pitt hit.330 against Clemson and.333 against Georgia Tech during the first weekend of ACC play, it was the Panthers first pair of back-to-back matches at.300 or better this season. The marks were also the team s secondand third-highest percentages of the year.

NEWS AND NOTES Kate Yeazel was named the Pitt Athlete of the Week for the second time this season on Sept. 30. While helping the Panthers to a 2-0 ACC start, Yeazel totaled 22 kills (3.67/set) and hit.349 against Georgia Tech and Clemson. Those stats included 14 kills and a.545 attack percentage against the Yellow Jackets alone. Pitt has served more aces than is opponent in 12 of 19 matches this season. The Panthers single-match high is 13 aces at USF. The Bulls totaled just three aces in that five-set match. After defeating Clemson, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, Pitt started its conference season 3-0 for the first time since 2008 when it opened Big East play with a trio of five-set wins over Villanova, Seton Hall and South Florida. Delaney Clesen earned her third selection to an All-Tournament Team this season when she finished with 65 digs (4.64/set) and 14 assists (1.00/set) at the Pitt Panther Invitational in late September. Among the junior libero s highlights were a career-best 27 digs against Morehead State and another personal record of nine assists opposite Rutgers. Mechael Guess joined Delaney Clesen on the Pitt Panther Invitational All-Tournament Team with 30 kills (2.73/set) and a.343 attack percentage. Guess set a then-season high against Cornell with 16 kills and surpassed her previous personal best in blocks with five against Morehead State in the weekend s finale. It was the junior s first career all-tournament selection. Kate Yeazel became the first Panther to reach the 20-kill mark on Sept. 20 against Cornell. The 20 kills were a career high for the junior. Before Yeazel, the last Pitt player with at least 20 kills in a single match was Alexa Campbell, who registered 21 at Rutgers on Sept. 23, 2012. In their 3-0 victory over Florida Atlantic on Sept. 14, the Panthers recorded 51 kills, their most in a three-set match this season. Their 88 attempts in that contest was their fewest in a three-set match this season. Pitt closed the night out hitting.455 (51-11-88). The last time it registered an attack percentage at better than.400 was on Nov. 15, 2009 when it hit.430 (49-9-93) against Rutgers. Kate Yeazel was named the UConn Classic MVP on Sept. 7. The junior totaled 43 kills and 13 total blocks in three matches in Storrs. Pitt welcomes a new coaching staff to the sidelines in 2013 with Dan Fisher at the helm and Craig Dyer and Lindsey Campbell assisting. All three coaches have national titles under their belts. Fisher and Campbell were NAIA national champions at Concordia last fall, while Dyer raised a trophy as an assistant with the Penn State men s volleyball team in 2008. Five of Pitt s six ACC matches have been decided in straight sets... Jessica Wynn has already set single-season highs in aces (9), assists (25), digs (158), and blocks (34) this fall... Pitt defeated Clemson and Georgia Tech for the first time in program history in late September... THIS WEEK S OPPONENTS boston college: The Eagles start the week at 8-10 overall. The only team still looking for a conference win, they are 0-6 in the ACC having lost in five sets to Miami and Virginia and straight sets to Florida State, N.C. State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech. Boston College s recent defeats to the Hokies and the Cavaliers bring its losing streak to eight. Prior to that, however, the Eagles had won six in a row to take the titles at their own BC Invitational and the Columbia Tournament. Boston College went 10-22 overall and 4-16 in the ACC a year ago when it finished the campaign on a 13-match losing streak. In 2013, the Eagles were voted 14th in the ACC Preseason Poll. Sophomore outside hitter Katty Workman was named to the Preaseason All-ACC Team. Syracuse: Like Boston College, Syracuse has struggled in the early weeks of ACC action. The Orange are 6-12 overall and 1-5 in conference play. The lone win came just last weekend against Virginia by a score of 3-1. They have also fallen in four sets to Florida State, Miami, N.C. State and Virginia Tech, while their loss to North Carolina came in straight sets. Syracuse and Pitt have had some similar non-conference opponents this fall. The Orange defeated Rutgers 3-2 on Sept. 6 and lost 3-0 at Purdue on Sept. 20. The Orange recently made the jump to the ACC with Pitt. Last season as a member of the Big East, Syracuse went 12-18 on the year and 4-11 in conference play. Syracuse was the No. 12 selection in the 2013 ACC Preaseason Poll. HEAD COACH DAN FISHER THE FISHER FILE 2012 NAIA National Champion at Concorida 38-0 in 2012 2012 NAIA Tournament Coach of the Year 2011 NAIA National Runners- Up 2011 NAIA/AVCA National Coach of the Year 75-2 Overall NAIA Record Assistant for the USA National Pan Am Cup Team Associate Head Coach for the University of Hawaii men s volleyball team (2009-11) Associate Head Coach for University of San Francisco women s volleyball team (2007-08) Played professionally for five years in Belguim, Spain, Switzerland Graduate of Pacific, 99 It became clear to me throughout the interview process what a special place Pitt is, Fisher said. From my wife and my daughter, we are all excited to make this move. I want to thank Steve Pederson and Donna Sanft for the work they did to make us feel at home. Fisher will guide the Panthers in their inaugural season as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC is and will always be one of the top conferences in the nation, Fisher continued. To be a good team in the ACC means you are one of the best teams in the nation. Playing in that league will prepare our team for the NCAA Tournament. A proven winner on the collegiate and professional levels, Dan Fisher was named the new head coach of the University of Pittsburgh women s volleyball program in January 2013. Fisher joined Pitt one month after leading Concordia University to its first-ever NAIA National Championship title. In his two years at Concordia, Fisher guided the Eagles women s volleyball program to an overall record of 75-2 (.974). In 2011, Fisher led Concordia to a national runner-up finish and was named the NAIA/AVCA National Coach of the Year. This past season, Concordia finished with a perfect 38-0 record en route to the National Championship. He was awarded the NAIA Tournament Coach of the Year for his perfect run through the postseason. We are very excited to welcome Dan Fisher to Pitt to lead our volleyball program, Athletic Director Steve Pederson said. Dan has a proven track record as a winner and brings a unique set of skills and background to this position. Volleyball is important to Pitt and we were committed to finding a coach to build upon the history and traditions of this program. I am grateful to Donna Sanft (Executive Associate Athletic Director), who led the search, and excited that it concluded with such a terrific coach. We look forward to working with Coach Fisher to help him achieve great things at Pitt. Fisher has also experienced success coaching on the professional level. In July of 2012, he was an assistant coach for the women s Gold Medal winning USA National Pan Am Cup Team. Fisher s primary duties were working with the team s setters and planning offensive systems and tactics. Dan is a great fit at this university, Donna Sanft said. He has been a winner at every level as a player and a coach. He is a great leader who has high aspirations for our players athletically and academically. We are excited for the future of Pitt volleyball with Dan as our head coach. From 2009-11, Fisher was the associate head coach for the University of Hawaii, men s volleyball team, one of the nation s elite programs. Fisher helped the Warriors earn a No. 4 national ranking in 2010 and coached three All-Americans during his tenure. Fisher was the associate head women s volleyball coach at the University of San Francisco in 2007 and 2008. In his first season with the Dons, Fisher helped USF to a second-place finish in the West Coast Conference as the team earned an NCAA Tournament berth. Upon his graduation from the University of Pacific in 1999, Fisher spent five years playing professionally in Belgium, Spain and Switzerland.
